Bum’s rush last full day of cruise

Recommended Posts

We pay just as much for the last full day of our cruise as the first day of our cruise, so I’m wondering why we felt like we were getting the bum’s rush on the last day of our otherwise quite pleasant recent Reflection cruise. Our first clue that they wanted us off the ship was when we returned to our cabin after lunch and found that all of the various cabin amenities, such as the binoculars, notepad, and candy packets (which we’d stashed in a bedside table out of sight), had been gathered up and placed in a pile on a high shelf. That annoyed me, so I put these items back where we’d had them, and we actually had occasion to use the binoculars later that day. The magazines had also been collected from around the cabin and were stacked above the safe. When we returned to the cabin shortly after an early dinner, I was surprised to see the bottle of water that we kept in the fridge sitting out on the desk, warm. Turns out, the refrigerator was locked. The vase of flowers that came with the concierge cabin was gone, as was the plate of fruit. New robes were hung in the closet. The final insult came when we realized that our toiletries had been removed from the shower and apparently disposed of. The piece of soap we had in there had been placed in the soap dish by the sink (which was a little creepy). What … we’re not supposed to take a shower the last night?!? Hey, it’s still our cabin!

We have never had quite that amount of "get ready and leave" in our cabin but we have noticed new bathrobes and some other things like sheets up in the top of the closet and other things ready for the new people, in the cabinet with the bar set up. We tend to keep the magazines and other things stacked and out of the way or hidden, just for space and aesthetics.

Sorry they made you feel rushed. I know the cabin attendants are really busy on that last day, but it's not right to make you feel like you're not still welcome.

I don't like them touching my toiletries either. What I REALLY REALLY don't like is them folding a point on my toilet paper!!!!! Have they used hands (gloved or not) that scrubbed the toilet and cleaned the room to do that? I imagine so. Do I want to use that point on ME? No. Eeeuw. I always tear that off, I hate that. They might think it looks like they were there and cleaned and freshened it up. To me it's just gross. (Am I the only one???)

I've never experienced anything quite that obvious but I do know what you mean. We notice it most at breakfast on the last day. The staff don't seem quite so "interested" as previously. They did lock the fridge on the last night which was a bit annoying as we had put something in there. I guess by that time they have created your bill and don't have any mechanism to charge you if to take something out of it. I understand the cabin crew have a lot to do to prepare for the next cruise but to start clearing your cabin the night before seems excessive.

We have expereinced the same as the OP on a few cruises and we laugh that the attendant must think that we are shady characters that will loot the cabin and pack everything that isn't nailed down.

Sometimes the robes have been removed, fridge locked, extra pillows and magazines removed and one time we had to call and ask for wash cloths and towels as they were gone.

I think the worst was when we stay at a AI resort. We were picked up at the airport by a private limo, and served drinks on the way to the property. When we got there we escorted to the private office and also offered and served drinks for our check in and orientation. Our luggage was taken to our room and was there upon entering.

Everything was first class and we were impressed by that first day but things slowly went down hill and hti rock bottom on the the last day. We were packed and went to the office to find out about the travel arrangements getting back to the ariport. We were told to have our luggage and wait over there for the bus. Asked what time will it be here and was told in time to get us there. We had to carry our bags to the "bus stop" and wait for it. No refreshments or even a bench to sit on. We waited about 35 minutes and a old dilapidated mini van with some passengers already in from another resort picked us up. It was rather cramped and there were no drinks served. We felt like yesterday's trash that they were glad to get rid of. The name of the place was Sandals. That was also the last time we stayed at a AI.

Happy cruisng 🌊🚢🇺🇸🌞

Unfortunately, I think some people do abscond with some of the "stuff". I've heard of people grabbing the toiletries every day during a cruise and not using them, but saving them in a suite case to bring home.

I've also heard many people ask if they can keep the binoculars or umbrellas or robes. I think they stopped putting pens in the rooms because people took off with them. Same with some of the bathroom amenities. I think the costs can add up for them.

They also have very little time to turn around the rooms before the "new" people start complaining about not being able to get to their room for the next cruise.

But, all that said it sounds like they went way overboard on OP's cruise.

What I hate is when sometimes they bring the end of cruise documents on like day 5 of a 7 day cruise. Then you start feeling like it's over because you have to have filled out customs forms to GS so early.

It is kind of counterproductive at times because that's usually when people are thinking about whether or not to leave extra tips. I wonder how many people have gotten the "bum's rush" like OP and decide against leaving that extra $20 since they felt kind of ripped off a bit?

On our last cruise on the last day the steward disposed of the 1/2 bar of soap that we had by the sink. Being a compulsive handwasher on cruises this annoyed me. Fortunately they had a new one in the cabinet for the next cruisers, I had no trouble opening it and using it for my last day. In my opinion they just caused themselves more work.

There was also the fresh sheets above the bed, as well as the fresh robes in the closet. Frig was locked, but I've seen this many times and didn't really bother me.

I've noticed this more like on day 2, seems excessive to me, but I just go ahead and get it out of the way.

Wow  I would most definitely have had a chat with my room steward. I don't mind seeing the new sheets or robes show up and discreetly put to the side but to take your toiletries from the shower - oh no you didn't.

The thing about this though is that we all want every second of our cruise time - from the first day to the last day, so many people, (me included) want on that ship as early as possible - and we want our cabin as soon as possible, stressing the staff to have each and every cabin cleaned, made up, and stocked. Which I am guessing if they didn't have their "early start" the day before - that it would be impossible to accomplish on turn around morning. Doesn't make this behavior right but I guess can sorta understand the room steward's perspective. I'm guessing those that push the envelope are costing themselves tips.

We've had some things removed like the note pad and pen & binoculars. If the mini bar is locked it does not bother us. We've never had soap, shampoo, etc. removed. Clean robes have been in the suite but ours were still there for our use. I do agree that staff at breakfast on disembarkation day are just waiting for us to finish and move on. While it is not my ideal ending to a cruise, I see their point since the new passengers are just chomping at the bit to get on, as we were 2 weeks earlier.

I've experienced the same. I just figured that some folks take anything they can get their hands on and they were trying to make sure nothing walked away, so I really didn't take offense. They have never touched my toiletries or any other personal items.

OP -- You said that this happened right after lunch on the last day. Did you speak to your steward (or the assistant) about it? We always see our room stewards on the last evening -- and I would have said something about the opened toiletries and chocolates, at least. For heaven's sake -- those items, at least, are yours! And, if my room steward did something like that , and then disappeared on the last day -- I would be on the phone to the head of housekeeping.

On the last evening, we have found new bedding and clean robes discreetly stashed in the room. We've also noticed that, if we had moved items like the hair dryer, umbrella, and binocs, they were gathered up and put back on the last evening. And, of course, the mini-fridge is usually re-stocked and locked on the last evening. But, it sounds like you maybe had an over-eager steward (or assistant) -- and they should have been spoken to, about it.

The fridge thing is typical for billing purposes but they went a bit far I think. We had some of this on our recent cruise on the Infinity in CC.

I will say this....at least you got flowers...we never had any.

Taking your toiletries went over the line!

And yes, I'd call it a bum's rush.

We experienced exactly the same treatment on our last day on our one previous Celebrity cruise, on Summit in 2009. Our last day was a sea day, things kept disappearing (although the dirty water in the flower vase was still there). An attractive itinerary and the 123GO sale convinced us to give it another try and we booked the 11-night Summit cruise in 2017. I think we'll have to have a conversation with our cabin steward to try to prevent it from happening again.

I'm thinking of being preventative too Miss Vickie when I go in 2 weeks on Reflection. I've never had them clear the fridge for our own food/drinks, but had planned to do that this time when I read others had done (why didn't I think of that before?) When I ask for it to be cleared on day 1 I may mention I've heard they tend to tidy up and lock the fridge the last full day, if they could give me a heads up that would be nice, I'd prefer them not to move my things ... Would that be rude?

That doesn't sound rude to me.

OK, I admit to taking the shower cap on my last cruise day. :D

Seriously, we also noticed the new robes and clean sheets in our stateroom on the last afternoon. I didn't mind them being there, but did mind that the room steward had been in our closet and in the cabinet above the bed where we still had our things stored. Also, it bothers me that these same items are residing in someone else's stateroom for a day before they are mine!

Like with the soap incident, we have come back from breakfast on the last morning to find fresh soap and towels hanging in the bathroom, and ours gone. We also like to wash up and brush our teeth after breakfast, so we are forced to use at least one of the clean towels. When we do, we throw it on the floor so that the stewards know it is dirty. I wonder how many past guest have used OUR clean towels on the morning and then left them hanging.

On the other hand, during our last cruise, our steward let us stay in the stateroom until 9:15. He said he had plenty other staterooms that were vacant. As a thank you, I stripped the bed sheets for him. :D

I have noticed a few of these things, but never so early in the day. Normally it has been when we have returned to the room after dinner and they have done their turn down service but also readied the room somewhat for the next day.:D

IMHO, Seems the basic problem is when disembarking we want to know how late we stay on the ship. When embarking we want to know what is the earliest we can get on the ship. In between the two the crew has to get the ship ready for the next cruise.

Maybe if we all got off by 9-9:30 and didn't try and get on until after 12 the crew would have the time they need to get ready without infringing on our toiletries, flowers, etc.

Unfortunately some cruisers are like vultures waiting to scavenge what ever that can get their digits on. These people kipe what ever that they can get their hands on. For that the reason for things being placed in their proper location, locked, removed, etc.

Also, there are those who show up at the cruise terminal @ 10-11am wondering why they can't board the ship. If they don't get the ship in order on the previous day, you wouldn't be boarding till 3pm. What it boils down to - it's a necessary evil.

BTW - Someone mentioned about folding the tp. If someone worried about that, it's probably best the one never leaves their cabin, nor any one else enters it.

On our last cruise I picked up a robe and there were sweat stains under the arm pits. Didn't want to use that one so I put on the other one and found a facial tissue in the pocket. Neither my wife or I wore a robe prior to that. I found the tissue as I was putting my smart phone in the pocket to take on the balcony along with a drink to read. Not a warm feeling.

We got ours on day 2 of a 14-night cruise on our latest cruise! It bothered me at the time but, I realised later, it was better to get them done with and forgotten early than as an early reminder of the end of the cruise. Perhaps we should complete the documentation for the end of the cruise when we check-in. That way we get no early reminders.
