No smoking Not enforced on Navigator

Hi, we are currently on the Navigator of the Seas in a junior suite just above a royal family suite. The people in the room have smoked our entire trip making our balcony unusable.

We have reported it 6 times to guest services ( one fellow we talked to didn't even know it wasn't allowed). We even enlisted the help of Nadja the concierge who has tried to help us to no avail. I have even talked to the head of guest service wh has been of no use.

It looks like to me if you spend enough money on a room you get to do what you want! Ironic thing is we are in that room next week.

Ahhhh, the illusive chain smoking balcony guest who booked their cruise so they can spend it on the balcony 24x7 smoking. To the OP I would say this - you can either spend your cruise complaining or enjoy it. Your choice, but at this point it is obvious that RCI has no intention of doing anything so I'd drop it and spend my time enjoying the cruise.

Wish we had him. Talked to someone who told us they told the smoker if we complain again they will be hit with a very large fine. So far so good

And you believed that? That the ships staff is telling the other guest to blame you? Sounds like mealy mouthed garbage. Disappointed that RCI has done nothing about this.

At this point I'd be asking to speak with the hotel director. (And by asking, I mean demanding.)

And if I went into the cabin the next week and smelled the slightest trace of smoke, I'd have them up there personally smelling it and I'd be demanding something be done about it immediately.

If you make to big a fuss,you may be the one they throw off the ship.:)

Recently spoke to a neighbor who just booked a RCL cruise because their travel agent told them that RCL no longer enforces the no smoking rules. Apparently the OP problem is not an isolated incident.

the TA is wrong, or the neighbor is deluding himself.

I assure you that this( OP thread) is very much an isolated incident and that MANY passengers, including myself, would absolutely be making a stink( pun intended) about smoking on balconies or anywhere not authorized.

You are absolutely right, and I know this from experience. The crew on Vision did an excellent job responding to a smoking neighbor of mine. They handled it right away, they did fine her after the first warning didn't stop her, and the GS Manager himself called me twice to make sure I was satisfied. I just wanted the smoking to stop, and they went above and beyond to handle it and to communicate their efforts to me.

We also had a neighbor smoking next door on Vision and it was handled within minutes. I could hear the conversation between security and the pax. They gave them a very stern warning and told them they would be removed from the ship if it continued.

After that we saw them many times hanging at the casino entrance.......kinda felt sorry for them.

And then you can bet I would go completely public about it. Throwing off a passenger who's obeying the rules while doing nothing about one flaunting the rules? People have done it with airlines for their treatment, I could certainly do it about a cruiseline.

Wait... they wanted to smoke, but not be engulfed by it by going IN the casino? That's funny. (And clearly they have issues with the smell themselves... so one wonders why not just quit.)

Why not just go to one of the designated outside smoking areas?

On the Liberty on our b2b we were given certificates for a $$$ amount for a future cruise for both legs of our cruise. Our neighbor was talked to by the cabin steward, the supervisor and someone from GS. GS called me two times to follow up and to see if things smoke free now. So first hand knowledge that the Liberty takes the smoking issue seriously.

That in itself is a joke. The only fire at sea attributed to a cigarette was on a Princess ship and that was not even proven but believed to be started by a thrown cigarette. The cigarette landed on clothing (that is not supposed to be left on a balcony) which caught fire catching the balcony furniture on fire (the furniture has been changed to flame retardant furniture now). Almost impossible to catch a ship on fire with a cigarette unless you're using a flame thrower to light it.

Last I heard, the fire on the Grandeur a couple of years ago might have been started by a cigarette.

You just won't let it go. You also obviously know nothing about fire dangers at sea or you wouldn't be so flip about it.

What gets me is anyone who doesn't think the rule needs to be enforced? Rules exist for a reason and the reality is, the majority of people do not smoke and some of those have very severe allergies, others just don't wish to be impacted by the health hazards of second hand smoke which do exist.

We know two separate couples that both smoke who won't smoke in their own homes because they don't want the smell in their furniture, drapes, carpet, clothes, etc.

We were over at one of the couple's house last week and watched them take turns going outside in the rain to smoke.

Just curious. Would you also be willing to accept this advice yourself had your next door cabin neighbors blasted rap (or any kind really) music from 1am - 6am daily? I'm just saying, telling the OP to just drop it is pretty silly. The OP paid what we can only assume is a hefty price for their cruise. They paid for a balcony that is being rendered useless because RC, thus far, has been unwilling (not unable - simply unwilling) to remedy the situation. The good news, though, is it sounds like from an earlier post that RC has actually stepped up and taken measures to remedy this. It's unfortunate for the OP, though, that it took so many complaints for this to be resolved.

Did I miss something? Did RC do something about the smokers? I'm very curious to hear what ended up happening.

Its clear by threads like these who ran to the principals office when they were younger, who use to fight and who was go with the flow... Kinda funny. The interesting thing is on the aft of voyager and freedom class ships is where the dining room crew go out for smoke breaks on deck 5 which is visible from most of the aft balconies. It might be awkward for someone who was just out there smoking have to come and reprimand someone for smoking as many of the crew wear multiple hats. I remember a cruise about a 2 years ago where my wife, 3 year old son and myself were walking back from picking up my son from the nursery on Oasis and on our way we walked by a room that Jeff Spicoli must have been staying in with Chech and Chong. The smell of herb was so strong when we walked by a cabin and it filled the hallway. I stopped for a split second to reminisce about my not so long ago youth and 2 ships officers walked right by me and said "smells a little skunky eh?" We all laughed. It was not the only night we smelt it in that particular location.

Actually I was usually the one getting told on, but what does that have to do with the fact I had an unusable balcony that the ship refused to do anything about. I have not heard from Bailey's office yet & they are investigating the officer that we spoke to so I will not name them. It has not ruined our trip but it has dissapointed me in Rccl.

As a smoker myself who lives in a jurisdiction where smoking in indoor public places has been regulated for almost 20 years, I can't actually imagine smoking inside anymore. We certainly don't in our home nor does anybody else we know. I personally don't smoke in the casino on any cruise ship and the ships I've been on with "smoking lounges" (most recently Liberty of the Seas and Coral Princess), well, those rooms themselves could serve as smoking-cessation therapy because they're so vile. :D

We were told by a ships officer who requested not to be named that the incident had moved to phase two. I do not know what that meant but that is where it is at. Thanks to all for you're support it has been a rewarding experience to know so many people are concerned for us! Perhaps we shall all get to sail together some day without incident.

Where is the "smoking lounge" on The Liberty? That's the one venue I need to stay away from. :eek:

OP, please keep us posted and hope you get some satisfaction.

Here is the list of Consequences for breaking the rules:

Consequences

Failure to act in accordance with this policy, or if a guest's presence onboard creates a concern for safety or security, may result in:

 Intervention by Security, other management personnel, or law enforcement;

 Removal of certain onboard privileges, which may include being detained, quarantined or

confined in a stateroom or holding cell;

 Confiscation of illegal/contraband/prohibited items (may be turned over to law enforcement

authorities);

 Denial of boarding on the current or any future Royal Caribbean International cruise vacation;

 Reporting of incidents to government and law enforcement authorities for follow-on legal

action;

 Removal from a ship at the next port of call. Guests removed from a Royal Caribbean

International ship pursuant to this policy are responsible for their own accommodations and transportation home, at their expense. Documentation requirements for re-entry into the guest’s home country are also the responsibility of the guest.

Establishing and articulating a Guest Conduct Policy helps ensure that all guests are able to enjoy a fantastic, safe and secure cruise vacation experience. Royal Caribbean International appreciates your support of this policy and hopes this will be the best vacation you have ever had.

This is the post above (by OP) that seemed to indicate RC was at least moving in the right direction to remedy. Any by "so far so good", I assumed the smoking, for the time being, had stopped.
