Room Service charge if you just order coffee?

Recommended Posts

John, I understand that you pay the gratuity ahead for the non- ala carte restaurants? That is what happens on other lines at least but if not then they certainly would get a very nice tip.

The 20% is ~what you pay ahead for gratuity, I believe.

I, too, have no idea what you mean by 20%. Twenty percent of WHAT? While the up barge for specialty restaurants purportedly includes some sort of tip no one to my knowledge (and I've been on these boards for quite a while) has been able to ascertain exactly how much of the charge goes to the waitstaff. Same with others - room steward? You say they get 20% - of what I ask. Same gratuity paid for a cheap inside as for a JS, so how can you say 20%. You make absolutely no sense.

I'm missing the hypocrisy part...

The disparaging comments to imply the poster was of a lesser character. Generally in society using disparaging comments to sway an opinion is considered a tactic of lesser character.

I said i have no problem tipping someone a couple of dollars who does a service for me,if someone else doesn't tip he/she is being mean.

Where is the hypocrisy in that.

I have always posted saying i pre pay or auto pay tips and on a 7 night cruise given an extra 200 dollars in tips,we get room service breakfast every morning and left 2-3 dollars tip.

Perhaps, but, it's not hypocrisy. It may be an ad hominem attack, although, I'm not sure about that either.

The motivation of the message to, as you say, attack the other poster's character is of itself a reference of character. Hypocrisy.

But the $7.95 room service charge includes a tip. Therefore the person IS tipping because the tip is included in the charge. They are just not over-tipping by giving extra. This is like saying that someone is being mean by not tipping the bar staff a couple extra dollars per drink even though each drink already has an 18% gratuity added to it.

There seems to be a lot of confusion whether the room service get anything out of $8.59 breakfast charge(tax was added onto the $7.95 charge on Freedom that we have just been on).

The new breakfast was lovely and we could sit on our balcony in our pyjamas to eat it.

A couple of dollars for the waiter is a small price to have your breakfast brought to you.

Couple of things. 1) The charge includes a tip, although how much it is and how much goes to the person delivering the order is not clear. Are they getting 5 dollars or 5 cents? We don't know. This is clearly different than ordering a drink, where you know how much of a tip is being added to the bill. 2) Some of the posters have suggested that they did tip prior to this charge, but, now that the charge is in place, they will no longer do so. To my mind, punishing those who have no input into the decision and are the most vulnerable is wrong. Especially in light of point 1.

I know I should let this go, but, I would be hypocritical if the crux of my argument was on character. In this case, the character is not part of the argument.

I agree with you it is unclear what if anything the room service waiter gets but for me a couple of dollars to have our breakfast brought to us is a small price to pay.

Absolutely. My understanding is the charge is a flat rate, so, depending on the number of orders being delivered, the tip could be even smaller in proportion to the work.

Here's a twist you might enjoy. The service fee is waived for Suite guests. Does the server get anything for delivering suite orders? Should Suite guests tip directly? [emoji33]

Spoken like the truly warm and generous person I am sure you are. Hopefully karma will find the time to reward you in kind.

As for me, I've been lucky. The few dollars in tips will make no difference to me but it can make a difference to the crew. I'm happy to help.

While I have never ordered room service, and I would probably throw in a buck or two if we did, talking down to others because they pay the service charge that is supposed to cover the tip, seems awful judgmental. It may be your opinion, but in no way is it required to give a tip.

I understand why some think that there crew probably deserve it, but saying it is required because they don't make enough is misguided. None of these employees to my knowledge are slaves, required to work, and won't be fed if they don't pay for their food in tips. They work long hours, but willfully signed the contract and get room and board included.

I do top extra, but that is my choice, and really no bodies business other than me and the person receiving the tip (or not).

I do. Why would't I tip because there is no service charge?

Effectively I view this as no change for us when we are staying in a full suite.

There is no fee if you just get a continental breakfast too.

A couple of dollars is nothing to us and i always did this even before the new breakfast charging.

The money you pay for a suite you deserve it free but i would still give them a cash tip.

You missed the point.

I'm just saying that Royal states the service charge includes gratuity. So how does the server get compensated internally, and do the servers get compensated at the same rate for Suite orders.

FWIW, we did a single order with 10 items. It took 2 carts. [emoji33] Technically it was no charge, I tipped $20. $2 a plate.

I thought it was "When in Rome"? Personally I try to follow the local rules. I find it works well.

How do you define "local" on a ship that flies under a Bahamian flag that spends much of its time in international waters, and that visits several different countries each week?

Chops and Giovanni staff do not share in the auto grats. Officially, your payment us a service charge, just like room service.

BTW, what 20% are you referring to?

I always thought that the specialist restaurants price include gratuities - is this incorrect?

Yes, I'm gathering this, we are budgeting for it but it seems crazy!!! Thanks for all the help, its needed. When things are "self service" so to speak, it sort of defeats the object.

We aren't big drinkers (hence its not worth buying a package) so hopefully it won't be a problem.

Whats the expected percentage tip in the buffet restaurant and the speciality ones ?

The waiters in the WJ buffett are included in the automatic gratuities so it is up to you if you tip more. In the specialties, tip is included in the up charge, but many people add more.
