Knickearth Posted July 25, 2017 #1 Share Posted July 25, 2017 after getting a survey regarding charging us for items to help carry around the ocean medallion fob - which stinks - hubby and I had a long discussion. We feel it is a nickel and dime issue to make money. Further, they will probably be able to track each passenger on ship. I hate the big brother mentality. So I hope we are able to opt out of a fob and get a room key.;)
Kamloops50 Posted July 25, 2017 #2 Share Posted July 25, 2017 You still can get a regular key card. The Royal and Regal require a key card size plastic to turn the lights on.

So I hope we are able to opt out of a fob and get a room key.;) We went to a "Princess Night" put on by our travel agent a few weeks ago. The Princess rep talked all about the medallions. You do not have to buy a fob or wrist band or neck chain - they are all options to hold your medallion, but they are not necessary. You can just put your medallion in your pocket if you want. Also, if you don't want to use the medallion at all, you can opt to get a card. Your choice. Personally I have no issue with the ship knowing where I am at any given time. Also there seems to be lots of positives about the medallions. I'm looking forward to trying it at least.
1965 Posted July 25, 2017 #4 Share Posted July 25, 2017 Sorry for my ignorance. What is "fob" ? Although we haven't yet been on a medallion cruise, I'm not particularly excited about the concept. I'm pretty sure when the time comes, we'll opt for the key card. Could be wrong. We may love it, but I don't think so.

wheezedr Posted July 25, 2017 #6 Share Posted July 25, 2017 You still can get a regular key card. The Royal and Regal require a key card size plastic to turn the lights on. But it does not have to be a current cruise card. Any card works so we have old ones, cruise or from somewhere else that we keep so we can just leave them in the slot or nearby. MrMan Posted July 25, 2017 #7 Share Posted July 25, 2017 You realize the ship tracks you with your key today. Every time you purchase something, get a drink, gamble, go to the MDR the ship knows where you are today. I assume you don't use a smartphone at home as your location is most likely shared by a dozen Aps. Do you hide your face every time you pass under a security camera? My point being you are being tracked today. I suspect there were people that didn't want big brother when a manual key lock went to a key card as well. The difference is with the medallion, the bar, store etc can know your favorite before you buy instead of after. I think it would be great when I approach the bar the bartender exclaims another Bloody Mary, extra spicey, or the casino manager says "King of Dragons II is available Mr X", Or the dock says "Mr X we have all the information we need to check in, no need to wait in line"

satxdiver Posted July 25, 2017 #9 Share Posted July 25, 2017 One key fob definition: A fob, commonly called a key fob, is a small security hardwaredevice with built-in authentication used to control and secure access to network services and data. Last cruise we forgot our "credit card" to keep the lights on in the stateroom so we made a paper one the proper size and it worked. You just need something stiff enough to be able to insert it into the slot and maintain its form. Security cameras can use face recognition software. Cell phones emit a signal that allows the phone to attach to a cell tower and also allows the cell phone to be tracked. AT&T will sell you an online service so you can track all the cellphones you have (track your kids). Our rental car we have this week uses a key fob that allows me to operate the car with the device in my pocket including opening the door when I stand near it - no metal key needed. Our hotel room card has to be held near the door lock to open the door. Welcome to the future.

Gee, folks, you're on a ship a number of miles off the shore of somewhere. What difference does it make whether you're in a boutique, the gym, a bar, a dining room, in your cabin or sitting in a chair down on deck X in the Atrium? If you're buying something, they already know today that you did, when you did it and how many of them you bought because they've got a receipt signed by you! I'm sure they'll analyse everything you do, how long you spend at the table in the buffet to which side of the threatre you prefer to sit in . No medallion for me, I'm planning to opt out. When it becomes mandatory which I'm sure it will then I will get an RFID wallet to keep it in so I can't be tracked like a puppy.
Rare Lady Arwen Posted July 25, 2017 #12 Share Posted July 25, 2017 We'll be on Royal after the Medallion roll out. Not sure what I think about it. I won't buy any accessory to carry it around, but maybe I'll stick it in my pocket and try it. I'm sure I can just change my mind at any point and get the key card. My DH refuses to even try it out. Won't wear it, won't carry it!

jennybenny Posted July 25, 2017 #15 Share Posted July 25, 2017 I will get an RFID wallet to keep it in so I can't be tracked like a puppy. Ha! I had not thought of that!! The only wallet I carry around on a cruise is a RFID wallet with my lipgloss, room key and cash for tips. I didn't realize I'd be blocking their ability to track me. Oh well. I'm not purchasing something to wear it around. I'll lose it that way!! In my tiny purse has always worked for me.

Madam you've been in the bathroom too long, do you have noro and don't want to report it? Some people don't care about being tracked and some do. I have the keyless entry to my car and don't find it any more convenient then the old key. . The fob takes up much more room then a key. I find some technology very helpful but some is just for the sake of it. I don't use a smart phone so no apps on my simple phone which stays in the safe at embarktion and doesn't come out until disembarkation. It's great that both the medallion can be opted out and the old key card are available to make every one happy.

We don't need it either... our style of crusing is very simple, we often have breakfast via Room Service in our cabin. Generally a cocktail late afternoon before dinner, wine with dinner ... we do like to go to the Crown Grill often but that it. They don't get much money out of us, we do our own tours... been this for 30 + years. We leave the auto tip, tip extra... and let it go at that... we don't need some to remember our drinks... etc.. caribill Posted July 26, 2017 #21 Share Posted July 26, 2017 You realize the ship tracks you with your key today. Every time you purchase something, get a drink, gamble, go to the MDR the ship knows where you are today. But if I am spending a morning without purchasing anything, drinking or gambling, the ship has no idea where I am. And that includes the MDR because even if the cruise card is looked at, no entry into a computer is made that shows you went into the room. With the Medallion the ship will know any venue I enter, from the library to the theater. And I can be located (at least my Medallion can be) instantly anywhere on the ship. One of the publicity releases said that a performer in the theater can know if you are watching him/her on your cabin TV. Now that is freaky. wishfulone Posted July 26, 2017 #22 Share Posted July 26, 2017 Princess already have cameras watching and microphones recording everything you do on board. Even private conversations between husband and wife are being recorded. With the Medallion they probably know what you're thinking before you do. The cameras are not recording your every move for the purpose of marketing and sales, they are for looking at something unusual like man over board or an altercation and they don't have your name and all the details about embedded. I've got to question the validity of your thinking their are microphones.
