Will Princess ditch OM

I had a chuckle when I read this. I guess you have not spent much time on Celebrity’s website. And their current one is new and improved!

 

I actually meant on the ship. Their technology on ships 15 years ago was better than Princess's. Princess's just stalled. I would agree all of the cruise lines websites need help.

Apologies if this has been discussed to death on other threads. I have just re-read information about the ***** on the Princess website but really cannot see how the spending of millions of $ on ***** will significantly improve my cruise experience. I can see that cardless entry to the cabin could be useful (especially when carrying a couple of coffees), boarding and leaving the ship could be quicker - only to be thwarted by having to stand in line to have your bag scanned. Tracking down Mrs Omega when she goes walkabout could save me hours. Beyond that, the other 'advantages' cited by Princess appear to be aimed at targeting products and services ie getting me to part with money (not the easiest task at the best of times). Do I really want to be targeted in this way - no thanks.

I love my gadgets and gizmos when they have a useful purpose, but ***** appears to me to be marginal at best - am I missing something?

I concur about your analysis regarding the use of technology to promote sales. An earlier post on this thread, or another one, indicated a guest noted their medallion spoke to them when they were walking past shops.

 

Under no circumstances will I put up with this intrusion into my privacy. Any cruise line attempting to impose this on me will be fired.

 

We left Celebrity cruise line years ago due to their increased sales shilling and in your face sales promotion. Princess could be next.

If you don't like the in-your-face commercialism, you might also dislike whatever Princess might be doing (with or without your knowledge) with all of the data it collects on you.

Right on! I do not intend to utilize this gizmo, and I sort of hope that it takes a long time to roll it out successfully, because at some point, it will become mandatory.

Not that many minors travel with the line but can a parent "waived" the right of a minor for privacy? Any gizmo that collect data or "share" FB friends and the likes are unnecessary for me.

They will keep *****. as with any new system there will be glitches. Transit systems have glitches when a new farecard system rolls out. They use a soft lauch like princess is using to iron out bugs. when Quantum of the seas launched for RCCL the first cruise was a disaster as there were so many glitches. i am sure Disney had problems with the magicbands when they came out

Took the words out of my mouth. Was thinking of Celebrity during the reading of this thread.

Tossing up between a Princess and Celebrity cruise at the moment and was leaning towards Celebrity until I thought of having to use their website.

No Omega, I don't think you are missing anything.

I am gobsmacked by the amount of threads about this and the number of people demanding OBC because the ***** will not be ready for their cruise. I am a gadget person but I couldn't care less whether I was on a cruise with this or not.

Each to their own I guess.

From my recent 1-week experience on the Regal, I'll have to call BS on the person who said the medallion spoke to them. Nothing ever "spoke" to either of us while we were on the ship. Personally, I don't even believe there is any way that the medallion can even transmit sound. Might be possible but I doubt it. I do know that it does show where you are located on the ship and it does show your name on the devices in the various shops on the ship. My wife had one of the people say hello to her in one of the shops when she was there. It surprised her and she asked the gentleman "What former cruise do you remember me from?" and he told her that he knew her name from his device and showed her her name/photo on the device.

While I haven't had an Medallion experience I can tell you that there is no speaker on the thing so it can't speak to you. Of course there is nothing to say an external speaker located at a shop couldn't do so but I would think that would just be a constant wall of noise if everybody had a Medallion.

I received an e-mail from Princess last night regarding my March 30, 2018 sailing on the Royal stating that it will not be Ocean ready due to all of the implementation issues.

 

Our February 2019 cruise on Royal no longer shows the Medallion banners on the web site but we haven't received any notice about it being removed. Our March 2018 sailing on Caribbean Princess is still showing the Medallion banner on the web site.

LOL.....this reminds me when we bought our parents a cordless phone for Christmas way back when. They refused to use it because they liked their worn out touch tone phone (push button with a cord). They also never used their ATM cards their bank sent them because they just could not understand why people would not go into the bank and talk to their favorite tellers instead of trusting a machine in the wall to handle their money. I am sure ***** will be old news in a couple of years on Princess. :')

Old news or history? There's still plenty of corded phones and bank tellers for those who prefer a choice, but with ***** it may be that way or the highway.

I can see a few *****'s getting ditched alright, like overboard into the briny.:o

 

I doubt that they will ever do away completely with the cruise card at least for the near future. Why? Because they're still going to have to have something that people with a pacemaker will be able to use.

I suspect they have sunk millions into this roll-out, as a shareholder, I'd like to know the figure actually. They decided to take the lead in the industry and build an in-house proprietary technology and an 'innovation' capability - it is not a surprise this has had bumps, though, again, as a shareholder, I'm disappointed it's had such a very rough start. To have to retract the ***** from their website, from already-booked sailings, even though far into the future, just does not suggest even Princess has confidence they can fix this issue within a short timeframe. I don't think they will scrap it but I think they are strongly re-thinking their plans.

And that is probably why they have removed the ***** labels from cruises on the website, so that there are no expectations. Their initial rollout itinerary may have been slightly optimistic too, so not announcing future ship rollouts until they are actually ready to do them is sensible.
