On Excursion, Where do you Keep Your Wallet? MoneyBelt, Fanny Bag, Pockets, Shoe?

Recommended Posts

We rarely take a wallet with us. It usually stays in the safe.

Depends on what we're doing that day. If it's to a beach, then only our sail pass, DL, and a bit of cash in an inside zippered pocket of our day bag. Since I don't swim, the bag is never left unattended.

If it's a tour, or shopping, then ID and sailpass (and passport if required) go into our neck pouches (we prefer these over moneybelts) under our clothes. Cash for the day, one credit card, and an ATM card ( if we need to withdraw local cash), is split between us. DH carries his in a zippered pocket. I carry mine in an inside zippered pocket of my crossbody bag.

I carry a zippered cross body bag. Only one credit card, my ID, and cash for the day are in it. If I'm on the land portion of my trip, I use a money belt to carry the bulk of my cash, my passport, and my high limit credit card.

After a guy standing right next to me at the Recoletta Cemetery in Buenos Aires lost $200 to a pickpocket, my pockets stay empty.

LOL! Depends where you are and what you're doing! We seldom bring much on an EXCURSION....it's paid for...so what do you need money for????

Hubby keeps his stuff in his front pocket.....anything I bring is in my tote or small purse. No different than anywhere else! We are aware of our surroundings.....hubby almost got "picked" in a casino in Vegas, by some young kid! He was aware, however, grabbed the kid's arm, and forced him to the ground....when he let go, the kid FLEW out of there! Always be aware!

I use an under the undershirt neck pouch. To get to this, someone would have to go through my outer clothing layers and my undershirt to get to the pouch. (I think I might notice this taking place.)

I always be sure to leave some dirty facial tissues in all of my pants pockets so that these folks obtain something for their efforts.

Just curious how you keep your money and or credit cards when you are on shore touring?

I don't carry a wallet. I carry my things in this and put this inside my shirt.

Please explain to an Aussie what a 'Fanny Bag' is? Sounds rude.lol.

I believe the OP meant a fanny pack. And yes, to many people from outside the US, it is a rude term. It is otherwise known as a waist pack. Also known as a pickpocket magnet.

Well think about it for 2 seconds.

Tips. Beverages. Perhaps a meal. Small souvenirs. Emergency cash for a taxi if you get stranded...

But you are aware that many of us do not do excursions, but our own thing. We have an upcoming cruise from Asia to Canada with 19 ports. On that cruise we have zero excursions (our norm), 3 private tours, and 16 ports that we DIY including one situation where we are leaving the ship overnight (leave in one port and rejoin in the next). So we do have a need to carry cash, credit cards, and decent ID.

So what do we do? Follow a little trick taught to us (many years ago) by a retired US Secret Service Agent. We simply carry our wallet (with two rubber bands to keep it from slipping) in a front pocket which is secured with a large safety pin. Simple...but very effective. We also carry some back-up cash in another location.

We use similar techniques when we do land trips (often for many weeks in a rental car). Is there anyway to guarantee security? No. But you can minimize the risk with the knowledge that professional thieves look for the easy mark and tend to ignore those who take precautions.

Hank

P.S. For our friends down under (and in the UK) it is called a "bum pack" :). Personally I now hate the things as they make an easy target for a pro

Thank you, now I know what such an item is.:* We would call it a 'bum bag', why I don't know, worn to the front or side, not rear, lol. Happy cruising.

We live in Puerto Vallarto during the winter, and our Condo balcony overlooks part of the Malecon where the whole town (including cruisers) seem to walk by several times a day. DW sometimes has fun pointing out the cruisers..which are usually easy to differentiate from those of us who live in the town and even many others who visit for a few days. When we see somebody with a fanny pack and a bottle of water...they are likely off a cruise ship :). And then there are those that wear their cruise card around their neck....or carry their cruise line's tote bag. This is generally guaranteed to get those folks higher prices from taxi drivers and many merchants. And then there is Diamonds International...that often does not even open in the morning unless there is a ship in town.

What we carry depends on where we are going. If we have a water based excursion I carry a dry bag that rolls up as a back-pack. The way it rolls down and fastens I should notice if someone is trying to take something, but I'm sure we look very much like tourists.

If we are just walking around port we try to dress comfortably and respectfully for the day, but not really any differently than at home. I will probably have a cross body purse since I need to carry an epi-pen, and my husband also has a cross body bag (but masculine looking) that holds an amazing amount of stuff if we think we need rain jackets, otherwise he uses his pockets or I carry in my bag.

I like the suggestion of the double rubber band and safety pin. Might try that next time:D

Fanny packs here in the U.S. are also mostly worn to the side or the front. Wearing one to the back just screams "hey, pickpockets, come and get it!!" :D

Fanny packs should be outlawed on anyone over 10 LOL!!!;p;p

It does depend on the excursion/day. If it is strictly beach, we have a Vault that we can lock to our chairs. So unless they want to take the whole chair or carrying bolt cutters, pretty safe. I also have a smaller version that I lock to my totes handle if we are doing something else. We carry very little off ship. Seapass, ID(had duplicate licenses made) & small amount of cash.

"F***y" means something completely different in the States... in fact, just what we'd call bum. But "bum" means something completely different in the States...:')

The only time I've seen our street wise kids shocked into silence was when the youth group's American helper asked what they thought of her f.pack...
