Cats- Oasis of the Seas

Recommended Posts

After reading many reviews on Oasis of the Seas, it seems like most dislike the show Cats and they say many people walk out of the show. I also see some who stick it out and says that the show gets better during Act 2. If that’s the case I was looking at the music numbers of the show and the famous song “Memories” is at the end of Act 1 before intermission. Is there a intermission on the Oasis of the Seas production? Of course we would like to see the show and the famous song, so our plan is to get there towards the end of Act 1 and watch all of Act 2. If many people leave during the show I doubt we will have any problems finding a seat. Thoughts?

I would suggest getting there at the beginning and watching the whole thing. T is a great show. If you are not familiar with the storyline, some suggest reading a synopsis before hand so you understand what is going on. I did not find that necessary the first time I saw it. I have seen cats on Broadway and on tour and on Oasis 3 times. TheOasis production is just as good. I am looking forward to November when I can see it again!

Your strategy would work fine. Yes Grizabella does her first performance of the hauntingly beautiful Memory at the end of act one. And yes a lot of people have had enough by intermission and head out.

I agree act 2 is better bang for your buck if the whole package sounds like too much. And With only the thinnest of plots holding it together anyway you don’t miss much story wise by skipping Act 1.

We sat through the whole show and returned to watch act 2 again later in the cruise.

Our group of 5 was all reserved in advance and really looking forward to this performance. Two of us had seen the show years ago on Broadway.

Sadly...the first half seems to drag on. More than 1/2 the people left at intermission and did not return. Ironically, the 2nd half is actually the better part of the overall show in terms of music and activity. Overall, we were disappointed. For a cruise show...they should consider condensing it somehow into a single 1 hour show or else choose another show entirely.

If my memory (no pun) serves me, there's a hint of the Memory song at the end of act 1 but the full version is in act 2.

You are right, the full song is close to the end of the show, right before they pick who goes to the Heavyside Layer. The one at the end of act 1 is a prelude.

I think we will go to the show at the beginning of Act 2. How long is Act 1 and intermission? If the show is at 2:30, would we be on time at 3:30pm for the beginning of intermission?

Against my better judgement i went to Cats last night.

It was canceled due to technical difficulties.

Bill

With that kind of luck, you should have gone straight to the casino!

Great show!

1. Print out a synopsis and read it before you go.

2. Sit close to the front toward the right side of the theatre as you enter to get the best interaction with the characters and enjoy their facial expressions.

3. Ignore those who leave.

3. Enjoy!

I can tell you that intermission is 15 minutes. Not sure of the 3:30 question, but I think you guess well. Go with it!

To each their own, but if you have to do 1 & 2 to better enjoy/understand a show then their are most likely serious flaws in it. A show should be just as enjoyable from the last row as it is from the front row.

I will agree with # 3 (to each their own).

Hopefully you will enjoy it (it was not our cup of tea and we left before intermission).

Thanks for the tips...how early should we arrive to the theater to get descent seats?

I agree with you, and feel very sad about those who badmouth the show.

"Welcome to the comedy theater, it sits sixty five... which is still more people than the second half of CATS." - Simeon, Oasis of the Seas Comedy Host

Oh, Simeon, I am so disappointed in you! :(

I believe it would be a better show if it was cut down a bit, but I was told that Andrew Lloyd Webber would not allow ANY changes to be made in the play when royal obtained the rights. It is a little bit of an odd storyline too! Jellicle cats, Jellicle cats!

You should research why T.S.Eliot called them Jellicle cats.

The name "Jellicle cat" is derived from an attempt by T.S. Eliot's infant niece to say "dear little cat.""

We saw it in nyc a long time ago and looking forward to seeing it on the oasis , but admit there are other shows I would have perfered . I also thing rccl really needs to change shows more often, there are some shows I would see more than twice but no many.

My family saw it last Aug on the Oasis. I liked it and so did my kids. I had not seen it before and thought it was well done and was glad we got to see it.

We had reservations near the end of the week and got there 15-20 min early and had seats about 4th row in the center.

But I dont like the whole reservation thing on this ship. They made it seem like the shows were sold out. You still had to get there early and wait in line and then there plenty of seats on the sides, etc.

If you sit on the ends and the first row the "cats" will come and interact with people.

Also during intermission, people could line up and have their picture taken with one of the cats, Old Deuteronomy, i believe.

If you want front row right, as we did, you arrive as soon as the doors open 45 minutes before the show starts. There are a small group (100 or fewer) of fervent fans who will prioritize this show, believe it or not, and beat you to the prime seats. The cats run up and down off the stage up here and right into your face - one stole my glasses and handed me some lady's purse, and did not give either back - we had to sort it out ourselves after the kitties were back up onstage.

It can also be viewed well from the balcony in my opinion, though without the interaction of course. Which many might prefer for ease of sneaking in and out. When we returned to re-watch act 2 on a later performance, the balcony was almost empty and we sat up there.

Folks, let's face it. This is one of the most famous and popular musicals of all time for a reason. For anyone who truly enjoys great song and dance - and lots of it, going on and on and on - it is a fabulous and whimsical show.

Many of the performers affect the proper accent to place you in the grungy urban London junkyard where the story takes place so you really get the original 1981 West End experience intended by Andrew Lloyd Webber.

On the other hand, it's based on a series of nonsensical poems for children and so there's a lot of, well, nonsense. The point is to let go and be dazzled, and not much more than that.

For anyone who likes their live theatre concise, straightforward and wrapped up in 45 minutes, this show is a nightmare. It's not great storytelling. It's self-important Jellicle cats who can and who do. That pretty much sums it up, and yes, I fully understand that nobody knows what a Jellicle is and they are not really a thing. Exactly. Have fun sneaking in or out as you see fit.
