Jasalth Posted May 31, 2018 #26 Share Posted May 31, 2018 As a current smoker who is trying kinda to quit (hey.... I quit for 8-12 hours a day now at work! its a start) I won't go into the debates and such. But I do suggest looking at River Cruises if you want a smoke free experience. Many of them are totally smoke free in the US and Europe also. While it won't be the hot weather beach vacation type cruise, it is something to consider if you are looking for places to experience, not a specific experience. Florida Glamazon Posted May 31, 2018 Author #27 Share Posted May 31, 2018 All cruise ships should restrict smoking to a single dinghy that gets towed while at sea. They can set up a zip line for smokers to board it. This will free other PAX from having to endure their pollution, and the cruise lines can work out the lower-priority details of getting someone back on the ship as time permits. Sent from my Pixel 2 XL using Tapatalk LOL, I am loving this. I have had several nice family friends who are smokers & wouldn't want to put them on an inflatable raft behind the ship-But i do wish more people could really learn more about the scary things tobacco can do & kick the habit. Rare BlueRiband Posted May 31, 2018 #28 Share Posted May 31, 2018 If your health or sensitivity is such that any amount of tobacco smoke will cause an unpleasant physical reaction than it may not be possible for you to sail. As you acknowledged there are no completely smoke-free ships. There will be smoking areas somewhere, and people who have finished their cigarette will return to the non-smoking areas of the ship. (Can't wait to see the forthcoming medical marijuana threads if and when that becomes legal and ships. Those sensitive to smoke will be locking horns with those who need to medicate their pain. Whose disability trumps the other's?)
pseudoware Posted May 31, 2018 #29 Share Posted May 31, 2018 Just because a smoker is in the "smoking area" doesn't mean their smoke stays there with them. Nobody wants to breathe smoke, period. Sent from my Pixel 2 XL using Tapatalk

JMorris271 Posted May 31, 2018 #31 Share Posted May 31, 2018 I am a smoker. We have been cruising over 25 years. We always follow the smoking rules but do see those who do not. What I find most irritating are the grumbles of non-smokers as they pass right thru the designated smoking areas. It's quite unfair to complain about something when the rules are being followed. I realize smoking is an awful, smelly habit. I do not smoke in my home or vehicle. Never the less, I DO enjoy smoking and will continue to do so and make every attempt to be polite about it. We have saved a TON of cruise fare by no longer purchasing balcony suites - we did that for years - now with the stricter policies I don't bother with a balcony since I can't use it for the purpose I wished.I figure I am a paying customer just like every non-smoker and I will continue to cruise several times per year until smoking is no longer allowed at all on board. In the meantime, I will smoke where posted smoking areas are and try to be quick about it! Power to you guy. Puff away. It's your right. But it is my right to mobile through an area filled with toxic fumes and to be repulsed. No show biz involved. Just frighten disgust. . If that annoys you,... sorry.

In the meantime, I will smoke where posted smoking areas are and try to be quick about it! Thank you for being a considerate smoker and following the rules. I used to be a heavy smoker (1-2 pks/day) but have been quit for over 20 years. We have always gotten balconies with the expectation that they are smoke free but often have smoking neighbors (and usually strong smell, possibly cigar and once pot). It frustrates me when others violation of the rules affects my cruise. I do recognize that many do still enjoy smoking and am glad there are areas for you to do so since it is still legal. Drinking does awful things to the body too and can affect non-drinking passengers but I doubt we'd see a dry cruise:eek: - not that I'd want that either. It isn't always easy for me to avoid the smoking areas, but I try to move through quickly and without complaining. And generally there is a way to avoid the smoking areas, but not always. I agree that people should not be complaining when the rules are followed. For your health I hope you reach the point where you want to quit, but until then may others treat you with the respect you are extending to them:)
navybankerteacher Posted May 31, 2018 #33 Share Posted May 31, 2018 Your problem is more likely the length of your cruise rather than your cruise line. 3 day cruises are routinely called booze cruises, full of fun loving young folks with little regard for technical issues, like where you can and cannot smoke. Try a 7 day or long sailing and you will find a very different demographic. Not perfect, but definitely different. Seconded --- a three day Carnival cruise is far more likely to attract the "my vacation, my rules" type who might be inclined to ignore smoking restrictions, than a longer cruise on a more up-market line. mnocket Posted May 31, 2018 #35 Share Posted May 31, 2018 It sounds like you are very sensitive to smoke and can detect a smoker miles away. If encountering smoke smells will ruin your day I wouldn't risk a cruise. As you suggest a smoke free land excursion may be your best option. zqvol Posted June 1, 2018 #41 Share Posted June 1, 2018 Have you been on any ship(s) that were relatively smoke-free or ships that made it easy to avoid smoke smells? I wish I could help but I have never been on any ship (over 10 different ones) where there has been any smoke smell except in the casino or right next t the cigar bar. Smoke smells are easy to avoid unless you go looking for them.

sloopsailor Posted June 1, 2018 #43 Share Posted June 1, 2018 Sometimes we have choices and other times we don't have a choice.. Yes, sometimes our choices are limited. On our last cruise the crew was doing some maintenance on once side of the deck the smoking area was on. Everyone had to use the other side to get from one end of the ship to the other - right through the smoking area. It was either go through the smoking area, or go backwards to the nearest stairwell or elevator and go to a different deck to get to where we were headed. That inconvenience lasted for most of the morning and afternoon.
Pudgesmom Posted June 1, 2018 #44 Share Posted June 1, 2018 On some ships, the smoking areas are in a direct path to another part of the ship. Sometimes they are inconvenient to avoid, forcing people to walk around that area. As for your complaint of people grumbling when walking through a smoking area, it is similar to what you would do if you walked into a room where several people had just passed gas. Passing gas in public is likewise "an awful, smelly habit". :D People are not "forced" to walk around smoking area. They may choose to do so if they wish to smell less smoke. Why must the non-smokers feel they are entitled to 100% of the ship? Some people do smoke, and the cruise line provides a place for that. Its not the same as someone passing gas. I've never heard someone commenting to a person who has passed gas in public. People walking by smokers will say rude things or make nasty faces to smokers sitting EXACTLY where they're supposed to be. Its not up to non-smokers to pass judgement on smokers. No one is perfect. I don't smoke anymore, but really? Get over yourselves. Avoid the area or don't complain.
Ergates The Ant Posted June 1, 2018 #45 Share Posted June 1, 2018 Celebrity is my cruise line of choice, and the non smoking interior is lovely. However, the design of the promenade deck on the Solstice class means that there are parts that jut out over the sea, and are directly under some of the cabins. I made the mistake once of booking a cabin over the smoking side of the prom, not too bad on sea days when the wind blew the smoke away, but when we were docked, smokers would stand at the railing, puffing away, and throwing their ash and cigarette ends over the side, despite the ash trays being on the wall tucked away underneath. I’m currently on Navigator out of the UK. Very surprised and delighted to find the entire interior including the casino is non smoking. ( just a very small leak from the doors of the cigar lounge, easily avoided once you remember it’s there) However, based on research and emails to and from RCI, I booked a balcony cabin on the port side, having been assured that the promenade smoking was on starboard. Guess what, smoking permitted on port side! However, due to the design of the covered promenade deck, there has been no smoke smells on our balcony. I think everyone is complying with the balcony smoking ban. So far so good, the few smoking bits on the pool deck are easily avoided. I do think it’s ridiculous though, to allow smoking on several areas of one side of the promenade deck. There are very few smokers on this cruise, but it just takes a couple at the front for the smell to pervade the whole way along. They should be at the back where the smoke will disperse, and leave more prom deck for the families with children to play quoits or admire the sunset! Sorry this is so long! The other thing to research is where the crew smoking areas are, and this you will need to ask other cruisers about. I spoke to one couple who had been on a Thomson cruise in an aft balcony, directly above the crew smoking zone, which spoilt their holiday. You should be able to find a ship and cruise line to suit you, I am very fussy and on my tenth or so cruise, so it can be done.
buchhalm Posted June 1, 2018 #46 Share Posted June 1, 2018 A great idea for a smoking area. A life raft, towed 300 meters behind the ship. They could sell that at 2 hours at a time...
Markanddonna Posted June 1, 2018 #47 Share Posted June 1, 2018 We were on a two-week transatlantic cruise followed by three weeks in Europe (land-based.) I can assure you we smelled much more smoke on the sidewalks and "open air" places throughout Europe than the second-hand smoke in the few designated places on the ship. Europeans may have a healthier diet and love to walk, but boy do their young people smoke A LOT!

Don’t smoke, don’t wanna be around it for the most part, but used to it in casinos and not much bothered by it there. Probably psychological and nostalgic. At 50 I even joke that I hate gambling, I only go for the free second hand smoke. ( Yes I am one of those socially awkward types who laughs at her own jokes). Thanks for observing the rules and don’t feel like you need to apologize for doing so. Sent from my iPhone using Forums

dreadpirate3 Posted June 1, 2018 #50 Share Posted June 1, 2018 Many resorts and most of the Disney properties are going completely smoke free. I avoid the smoke as much as possible, but our balcony neighbors smoked mj on their balcony frequently. Yes, we called. They could not catch them.
