Are there really starving people on a cruise ship?

Recommended Posts

I’ve been on 3 cruises, I’ve lost weight on each. I have not enjoyed the food. Our Carnival cruise however had the worst food, Disney was the best.
So why do you come back?

Kind of masochistic, dont you think.

Asked and answered, try something original.
Sorry, I dont see the answer.

Let's try again.

If you hate the food, why spend a week or so?

Just doesn't make sense

Anyone going on a cruise expecting food of any real quality is a moron. I don’t have high expectations of the food, they don’t disappoint.

If I wanted to vacation for food, a cruise would probably be dead last in my vacation options.

Eating at the buffet on a carnival ship is not where you go for quality food.

No buffet is quality food. Carnival, RCI or a land restaurant.

But that aside, the normal food on cruise ships is crap. The only decent food I’ve had on a cruise ship was on Disney in Palo. The food in the Carnival MDR wasn’t fit for animals.

OMG, put a wig on your husband and it's my WIFE.

Nope, not my husband. He's not very picky. I said I've read enough threads that stated what I said in quotes.

I’ve never cruised Disney because they don’t have casinos on their ships, but NCL has had great buffet food.

You know how many buffets I expect to find Eggs Benedict on, with a solidly poached egg that isn’t overcooked? Zero. NCL has always had great buffet food for me. I’ve never eaten buffet food on RCCL, with the exception of a fruit bar, and cut up fruit doesn’t count.

My advice is to ignore the non-specific criticisms of the MDR/buffet food. As others have said, food is subjective. One person's experience may not be your experience. If you're going on a mass-market cruise line expecting to have a James Beard culinary experience in the Windjammer (or in the MDR for that matter), you may need to adjust your expectations.

We cruised on Oasis in April - ate in 2 specialty restaurants and had the rest of our dinners in the MDR. I loved everything I had in the MDR with the exception of a slightly "fishy" piece of salmon. The specialty restaurants did not "wow" me enough to justify the added expense (we did the Italian one on "First Night Done Right" and then the steakhouse). I never feel well after any teppanyaki-type restaurant so I typically skip them on cruises.

I've never loved any cruise ship buffets but my husband, who will rate a dining experience based solely on how quickly he can get the food on his plate and into his mouth, loves the buffet :D We ate most of our lunches in the Park Café and enjoyed everything we had. The on board pizza will not be the best you've ever had but will fit the bill if you feel like eating pizza one day.

If a person can't find ANYTHING to eat while on a cruise, they may want to pursue another type of vacation where they can better control where and what they're eating.

Also FWIW, I read your title and understood exactly what the post would be about (do people really think there are staving people hiding in the hull of a cruise ship??)

There are a few billion people in this world who would love to eat Carnival MDR food. Your comment is elitist and disgusting.

Carnival MDR much better than RCI.

You should try some of the Las Vegas buffets, might change your opinion.

We're about 3 weeks away from our next cruise on Oasis.

We were on Empress last year for a Cuba trip and made it a B2B with a Carnival ship out of Jacksonville to the Bahamas. It just worked out as Jacksonville was on our way back to NY from Tampa.

The two cruises were very different and Empress won hands down by ship condition, decor, service and food.

I did notice the menu was a little different than years past, but comparing it to the second cruise, it was great.

I don't mean to knock CCL, but, I could start a thread on the obvious differences and a B2B made it easy to compare.

Anyway, back to food. Although the menu seemed leaner in options, I always found something to eat. I'm not a big fan of specialty dining as I don't think the upcharge is worth it. For example, we love Hibachi dining. On RCCL, Izumi is $45/pp or $180 for a family of 4. We have a local Hibachi restaurant that normally costs us about $120 with tip. Is Izumi that good. I know I'm on vacation, but considering there are dining options included in the trip price, it seems like a lot. Chops at $49. I'm a bit of a beef snob, I only buy Prime beef for home steaks and sometimes will splurge on aged prime. I've had some pretty good steaks on a cruise, but nothing worth $50 more.

The one benefit I do see in the Specialty dining on RCCL, is the customization to your schedule. On our itinerary, we chose late dining to maximize time in port, however, that created a bit of a conflict choosing our entertainment. I can see how Specialty dining or my time dining would work out better. We have been cruising for close to 25 years and always loved the personal attention you get in the MDR having the same servers everyday. For example, I normally like a pitcher of ice water on the table with some cut lemon for dinner. I normally don't drink enough water during the day and make up for it at dinner. In the MDR, I can ask my waiter for the water on the first day, slip him a tip and voila, I'm taken care of the whole trip.

Bouncing around from server to server didn't appeal to us when we tried NCL a few times.

So, should I be concerned about the food. I've viewed the menus online and was able to fine something to choose every night. I didn't get wowed that often, but I think I would be satisfied. I can see the attraction to the Ultimate dining experience and am happy for those who choose it. I just don't think I can pick where and what I wan to eat weeks in advanced.

Am I going to slim down on my cruise?

You can have lunch at Chops for considerably less. There was a cruise planner sale and I booked lunch for $17 per person.

I had shrimp cocktail, a tender filet with caesar salad, and delicious cheesecake for that price. It was markedly better food than the MDR which was ok.

A few billion? lol, that is quite a few. If Stringy steak and greasy vegetables is your thing, be my guest. I'll hold out for something better.

Never been to Vegas, no plans to go, but if I did I can't see myself eating at a buffet on purpose. I assume they have regular restaurants there also.

I disagree with the elitist and disgusting - there are only three scotches I drink, a single cigar I smoke, I only drink wine from Corvina grapes (Amarones), wtc etc. That’s elitist. Most places don’t have what I want or am willing to have, so I bring my own, or choose another venue. I would choose water instead of an inferior scotch.

Complaining about the food you’re given - not a particular dish, but the entirety of a cruiseline’s dining experience, as well as their upcharged options doesn’t make you elitist, it just makes you an ass looking for a reason to complain.

An elitist would opt to not sail with carnival because they’re too unclassy.

There are a ****load of cruisers who feel like it is their PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITY to tell everyone how much they cruise, how special they are, how exacting their standards are, and all the reasons why they think they are special and deserving of more preferential treatment.

They aren’t elitists, just asses.

Sometimes an overly refined palate causes a personality disorder.

Ah, ad-hominem attacks and name calling, the mark of true character.
