Anthem dining: Chops v. Wonderland

OK we have a free speciality dinner as one of our perks.

As much as I would like to eat at Jamie's, being wheat sensitive, the menu doesn't look like a good fit for me. (I can eat a little wheat, say in a sauce, but don't do well with foods that are predominantly wheat).

I assumed Chops, the safe choice. It is actually the one place we skipped on Allure--we had the ultimate dining plan & by the time we got to that reservation we were just FULL.

But I continue to be intrigued by Wonderland. We ate at Qsine on Celebrity, which is (was?) also a whimsical restaurant & we both loved it. He also LOVED 150 Central Park on Allure (fixed menu except entree, and fairly unique offerings) But looking at Wonderland menu, I'm just not sure. It might be just a bit TOO out of the box for DH.

Anyone had experience with Wonderland--especially with a self-proclaimed not so adventurous diner (tho he surprises me!)?

We dined in Wonderland on Anthem and it was a great experience!  If you are at all intrigued, I highly recommend trying it out at least once. IMO, it's a "better" option than chops, as you can dine at any high-end steak house on land anytime, but you just don't get the overall experience that you get from Wonderland anywhere else.

Also I have to add that my adult DD dined with me at BOTH Wonderland and Jamie's. She has Celiac's Disease and therefore cannot eat ANYTHING made with, or contaminated by, wheat, barley or rye. BOTH restaurants were very accommodating, and actually DD really appreciated the opportunity to dine at an Italian restaurant that offered so many GF options (practically any dish can be modified to GF). Why not purchase a BOGO deal, if offered, and try both?!

No matter what you decide, I don't think you can go wrong!

I personally think that it's the perfect time to try something outside of your comfort zone. You're already in a comfortable place (on vacation, relaxed), and it's more-or-less free, and if you decide you don't like it and don't each much, there's always another place to get food for little or no cost. Seems like a good time for him to possibly expand his palette (or find out he really doesn't like certain stuff that he only thought he didn't like but never actually tried) at minimal risk.

We've done Qsine on Reflection and Wonderland on Harmony.  Enjoyed both!

If you liked Qsine, I don't see any reason why you wouldn't like Wonderland.

And if you're still not sure and 150 Central Park is an option for you, I'd go there.  🙂

That would be me. I'm the basic, boring meat-n-potatoes guy, don't like seafood and would never think of even going near Izumi.....I don't even like typing it and pretty sure I just misspelled it.

Having said that, with some left over OBC to spend, went to Wonderland.  Can't remember what I ate but it was a mixture of land and seafood. Loved it and would do it again. All the items ranged from pretty good to really great.

If it helps your DH, the waiter will fine tune the selection to his liking. But the portions are small so if he doesn't like it, it'll be no big deal. And he will be full at the end b/c while the portions are small, there are plenty of them!

I have to agree with the posters that said you should try Wonderland.  Last time we sailed, we had free specialty dining, so we tried all the specialty restaurants.  We were underwhelmed by Chops (I love a good steak).  At Wonderland, I thought I would not find anything I'd like.  We were absolutely delighted at the food.  Try a little of everything.  Share the portions.  Save room for desserts.  We sail again in a few weeks and Wonderland is on our "Must DO" list.  One note: we have also done Qsine on Celebrity.  After the third time we decided that was enough.  Thank goodness they are changing Qsine's over to La Petit Chef

We ate in Chops on Oasis and also on the Anthem along with Wonderland.  Wonderland is a unique experience and the atmosphere is definitely something that should be experienced.  Although there were a couple of things we did not like everything was tried.  My granddaughter (11 yr old) also tried everything that was served.  As someone said, you can always go to a steak house but Wonderland is a unique meal.

I'm sailing next summer and Wonderland is at the top of my list. I love trying new things and I'm the type of person to go out of my way to find something on any menu that is new to me and I haven't tried before. The more exotic or unusual, the better, so this is right up my alley.

Was it dry?

Honestly, I don’t remember that it was, but I was so full at that time I don’t remember much of the desert except the beautiful presentation.

i am a picky eater and did not look forward to eating there, but went for my son. Once we got past the appetizers, the pork belly was great, the beef dish was wonderful, and the chicken was easily one of the best pieces of chicken we’ve had in our life.

our meal at Chops was just OK. When we think about the upcoming cruise, we are looking more forward to taking the wife and daughter to Wonderland than Chops.

The "downside" to cruising is trying new foods. 🙂

We have been cruising with our kids since they were 3 - and they try everything (because, heck, it's "free").

Things they have first tried on cruises include Sushi, frogs legs, escargot, lobster, caviar, clams casino etc.

The downside is that they loved most of it - so now that they are 17, we can't keep the bankroll up with the eating habits! 🙂

Hence the "downside".
