Exciting Ocean Medallion App News

Installed the OceanMedallion Class app on my iPad this afternoon in anticipation of our upcoming September cruise.  Filled in all the data required to activate and was a happy camper until the segment for purchasing Medallion holders...  Since the Medallion comes with a lanyard and we already purchased wrist bands from Amazon, the "basket" was empty on checkout.  Princess website didn't like that and sent me into a "do" loop within the app.  Not fun.  Looks like we will have to wait until check-in to get it fixed.  Guess this is what Princess calls "aggressive marketing."  The cruise card was so much easier.

We are just off Carib Princess.  We did not order Medallions ahead of time and we did not download any apps.   We got it at regular "old-fashioned" check-in which moved fairly fast.  We went to the 1st day "class" in theater about the Medallion & apps, learning nothing!  We wore the thing around our necks for the 2 week cruise.   Only good thing was that it had our door unlocked before we got to the room, which was handy for Mike when bringing us morning coffee from Internatl Cafe, or when we urgently needed the bathroom.  Otherwise an OVERHYPED NOTHING.   No faster off/on ship with Medallion than with key card.   Not once did a bartender ever great me by name and ask if I wanted a "vodka-tonic with extra lime", my usual bar order.    We had zero interest in playing/betting on games while in my cabin or walking to the Lido area.

The screens around the elevator areas showing ship layout & where things are, were nice -- however Allure of Seas has those same features, so needed on that much larger ship.

To summarize:  We were totally unimpressed with this obviously expensive program -- give us back the Happy Hour BOGO+$1 or +$2 or even +$3!!!

Glad to hear it's working on the ship right now. I won't be on the Royal for two more weeks so I'll be anxious to hear how it's working in the meantime. Can you keep us updated?

Enjoy your cruise!

Here's what I know now. I did speak w/one of the navigators. Plus I've played around with the new app comparing its sections with the individual apps downloaded previously.

The navigator said that they aren't necessarily telling people about the new app. The only difference in the new app and the old ones is that all of the individual apps i.e. Ocean Ready, Ocean Compass, Ocean Now et al, can be accessed through the one app instead of downloading separately. As for content, they are the same. The section in the Medallion Class for each points to the same site as the individual apps. I did a comparison of each by opening the old individual app and that section in the new Medallion Class app. They are the same. The Navigator says they are continually updating the apps/sections.

I found the Ocean Ready section in the Medallion Class app to be different from what I remember was in the Ocean Ready app the last time I was able to open it and there was more info in the new app. However since I haven't been able to open the old Ocean Ready since I printed the Ocean Ready boarding pass with QR code back in July, so I have no idea how the old and new versions compare.

I do know that I can now open Ocean Ready through the Medallion Class app and all of my info is there plus it added my upcoming cruises that I just booked on board.

We were on the CB in May and I used Ocean Ready to set up everything. However, that app has always been glitchy for me and only occasionally opens. I was able to open it prior to boarding for this series of cruises in July and I didn't have to do anything for those cruises since all information was the same including the security photo. I'm still using the security photo taken when we boarded for a cruise in May. As long as security is OK with it I can use it until it doesn't look like me anymore!!!

I have absolutely no idea how these apps will work once we leave the ship. I'm able to log on with my name and cabin #. Once I'm on land and have to use the password I don't know if it will open or not so can only hope that it does.

The Navigator says they are "light years" ahead of where the were before but it was so bad back then that may not mean a whole lot in the long run, but I can say without equivocation that the Medallion Class app works well onboard. I previously had some problems with locating my DH with Ocean Compass but the upgrades seemed to have improved it and that is working well now.

BTW, have an iPhone.

I do not see it on android

The MedallionClass App is currently available via the Apple App Store and coming soon to Google Play Store. Availability for Android devices is contingent upon review/approval from Google, but we hope it will be accessible in the next 7-10 days.

Isn't the JourneyView function new in the app? I know it appeared on portals on the ship. I understand you can 'bookmark' the events you are interested in on the timeline and view these using the My Events filter. Plus you get to see events for the whole cruise so can plan ahead.

Journey view is in the new Medallion Class with a separate access page. It is also in the old Ocean Now app. Not new. Don’t think you can bookmark in the app but you can in Ocean Concierge which is the old princess@sea. New name, same info.

Thank you for the very detailed and thorough report straight from the ship. Glad to hear it's working well onboard where it counts. Thanks for taking time out of your vacation to keep the rest of us up to date!

The main goal of the medallion class app is to have one stop shopping.  Like others have mentioned on this thread says; you should be able to use one app to accomplish everything once onboard the ship.  The other thing that is being worked on but is not necessarily available now; ability to add all your future cruise reservations in the app.

Everyone likes to conveniently "forget" that the sole reason d'être for the "Medallion" is to help Princess separate you from your money.  The only reason.  Its not to make things easier or better for passengers.  Caveat emptor - be very careful how you use their apps and where you use them.  Watch your account closely.

What is this about?

Globehoppers;  why do you want us to watch our account closely?   I sailed a medallion cruise and nothing was out of sorts with my folio.  Is this something that happened to you personally?

I downloaded all 6 apps. Will that be imported into the new app or do I need to download again once it's in droid form?

For what? Other than buying something to hold the medallion (I just kept it in my pocket but they include a free lanyard), there's nothing to "buy" that you wouldn't buy anyway.

just back from 1st medallion cruise

With the new MedallionClass app, you can access all of the digital experiences - OceanReady, OceanNow, OceanCompass, OceanView, PlayOcean, Ocean Casino and JourneyView (the popular timeline feature on the ships is now available in mobile format and you can bookmark activities to your own My Event customizable itinerary) - from your mobile device.

Big news!  I don't see it in the Android store yet but I assume it will be available before too long.  I ended up uninstalling the original five apps last week.  My phone has been super slow since I installed them several months ago.  My cruise isn't until January on the Sky.  I figured I could just reinstall them closer to sailing.  Now it seems like Princess actually listened to everyone's biggest issue of having to use five different apps for different aspects of the Medallion program.  Looking forward to having everything in one place!  Thanks for posting this!  I'll be watching for it.

Same here! I am anxiously awaiting for the Android app.

Yah we tried them out on the Crown this summer and I was not impressed. It's awkward to carry around (I don't do lanyards and refuse to pay for a medallion wristband) and I never felt like my cabin door was secure because it would randomly unlock when I was down the hallway. And when paying for things onboard it would charge me multiple times, luckily I caught it on my stateroom account. At the International Café they didn't have me sign anything for coffee anymore, so no receipt as proof.  OM just seems like a fancy new tech thing that tech fans (and teens) will love, but for those of us who have cruised over the decades and like to keep it simple...please just give me my cruise card.

Same happened to me. I’m not interested in any of their overpriced accessories. I gave them all of the relevant information required, so  I just closed the app.

@richsea Apologies for any confusion the process may have caused. To clarify, Medallion/Accessories shipment to home/port is optional. Guests only wanting to have their free Medallions and free lanyards delivered before they cruise can do so without purchasing additional accessories. Once you confirm your shipping address, you are given the option to "continue" to explore/shop for other accessories. If you prefer to end the process there, click the back arrow in the upper left corner and then the "X" next to your picture on the subsequent page.

If you do end up exploring accessories, but decide not to purchase, click the "X" in the upper left corner, and "Clear My Basket and Exit" which will return you to the primary OceanReady landing page. The OceanMedallion/Accessories bubble should be green. Hope that helps and that you have a fabulous vacation.

Thank you for your reply. I assumed that I didn’t have to buy anything, but wasn’t sure how to exit. When I opened the app a few days later, when I reopened it, the Ocean Medallion & Accessories bubble shows an “!”, indicating there is a problem. I’ll just ignore it.

thanks for your input here on CC; it’s very helpful.

How can I opt out of the lanyard? I am going to use what I used on my last OM voyage
