list your negatives about the summit

We haven't sailed on an M Class ship since the Revolution but will be on Millennium next year.

My negatives for an M Class ship post Revolution is the lack of shade at the sunset bar, the removal of the library and the limited specialty dining choices. None of these will keep me from enjoying the cruise.

Sailing from Bayone was a breeze since the redid the terminal eliminating the need to take a bus from the terminal to the ship.

One big negative is the fact they Celebrity keeps chartering this ship......and displacing loyal customers!

The charter groups are pretty loyal to Celebrity as well, and probably pay a lot more to charter the entire ship.

i just realized i should have demonstrated by saying the negatives ive found in my new research to summit because everything is subjective.

mdr and blu 2 tops way too close together for my comfort. ive sailed on a ship 2x this size and never sat that close to anyone except maybe in princess club class which was bad service anyway and id never pay for it. if i wanna be squished ill go to the buffet where i expect chaos and im ok with that.

no coffee table in veranda, partially negated by the chair now there that sits only 1.5 people and no tv on that side, almost makes it a wash and that side of the room is useless. but where to put room service? heck even in haven on NCL we ate off the bed so not the end of the world. but gotta admit i loved when we had a mini suite on princess  and had the 2nd tv across from the sofa and coffee table. set out room service and enjoyed.

not being able to eat in the mdr on sailaway day unless you are in a special room is something i havent seen before. on NCL there's a special restaurant for the special people, they dont take away the peon's MDR . we want to enjoy a more relax dining than the crowded buffet lines.

due solely to size i understand why there arent more specialty dining places but i've been spoiled on other ships with more.

not having a '24 hour' type of place like local and osheehans on NCL. (international cafe on princess) not because of their hours, but because of the variety of food you can get even from morning till later at nite. on summit the pool grill closes around 5 and so other than the buffet you literally have no other bar/snack type food from which to eat. im sure the buffet will make a good dent in this shortcoming but still nice to have the additional choices. also pretty sure spa cafe isnt open in the evening. so what other free quick serve choices are there

im not much of an activity guy but not having any central place to do activities seems counter intuitive even for an old ship. i feel princess piazza and princess live (regal/royal) excelled at this. the large NCL ships with atrium were a joke size wise but it was something at least 'centralized' vs having to go to the sky lounge on 11

--------------------------

ill quash the negative nellies by providing what i see as reasons to go on the ship

great 10 day to bermuda with the only negative being the late arrival time. make it 8 am and you have the perfect cruise to bermuda. arriving 315 on a friday is a bit of a wasted day.

buffet appears to be higher quality and great layout

outlets in lamps next to bed is a must for any ship these days. great addition

hopefully easy boarding in NJ but definitely cheaper than 40 a day parking in NYC

paying 200 for 4 perks is a much better deal than most other lines. NCL gives you 250 minutes of internet and charges 20 a day grat for the booze and 20 bucks for the 3 meal specialty gratuity. also never any obc on ncl unless thru agent. win for X

new bathrooms look great and lotta shelves under and over for storage. glass doors win!

installing cabins on 10 so some people on deck 9 can be under them is great

the tiny chef making my meal at qsine is something i really wanna do

solarium is great for bad weather days and hopefully empties out on nice days so i can enjoy without crowds

pool grill menu looks like i could eat there for some meals and not even do anything else.

no giant central cluster like atrium on the big NCL ships. having guest services literally next to the activities and elevtors screams bad planning to me so having things more decentralized is a plus here. i wont be accidentally walking thru a loud band or newlywed game

i cannot wait to ride the glass external elevators.

casino is non smoking. on ncl bliss they walled off half the casino for smokers. taking away opportunities. also i heard that carnival pride (was also in the running for this bermuda trip) allows it all in the casino so X doing non smoking is great.

Anyway, as for Summit, we were in a Sky Suite (S2) and I absolutely HATED the room itself - the layout, furniture, bathroom, lighting, outlet placement, etc. were all incredibly poorly designed. DH and I ran into each other more in this room than we ever have in any other room on a cruise. The balcony was very tight and the furniture out there was also terrible. I heard from others that these used to be wonderful rooms so a big miss for Celebrity on this aspect of the revolution.

However, overall we didn't love Summit and wouldn't choose an M-class ship again unless we were a) in a suite other than an S2 or possibly Aqua Class, and b) on a very port-intensive itinerary.

i saw pics of the new sky suites on this forum . i priced one for my bermuda trip. near 15K. (i'm sure less on a 7 day)  have you ever been in NCL haven? on christmas the 2 bedroom which is about 550 sq ft and of course in the haven complex, was that price. for the size and benefits of everything being in haven, id think that would be an easy win for NCL.  also those haven rooms are very elegant without the new ikea stuff that celebrity apparently bought. i was in a courtyard penthouse and i think the summit crowd would love the haven decor. i think you should all try it at least once if you havent already. it made my christmas cruise great! pics on cruise critic are easy to find but here's a link  https://www.cruisecritic.com/photos/ships/norwegian-bliss-988/haven-courtyard-penthouse-suite-412485/ that was only 8400 3ppl for a christmas cruise. im pretty sure a sky suite was more than that. i did think the bathroom was small for a suite but it was beautiful.

regarding port intensive. this bermuda trip has 3 sea days out of 10. so my plan was dinner and nite activities in SC 1 time and bermuda 2 nites and the other 7 obviously on board between mdr, qsine, tuscan and the buffet or room service.  while i was worried about being bored i realized even on the bliss at christmas i didnt utilize the entire top deck of 'fun' in the public areas so wont miss that. i will miss the private haven hot tubs though! ill use the solarium as a substitute for sure.

YIKES! We were on a 7-day, but we also had the advantage of having booked this cruise before the revolution schedule for Summit was released to the general public. We booked on board a previous cruise and the person helping us nudged us quite firmly toward the suite (we were trying to decide between AQ and Suite, and S2 was only about $300 more pp than A1 at that moment). I am sure he knew what we did not, which was that suites were going to become MUCH more expensive after the revolution was announced. We paid around $2200pp and when the revolution schedule came out, that price shot up to $3K+pp and never came back down. I wouldn't be willing to pay much more than what we did, and honestly given how bad the room itself was I would probably choose Aqua anyway (despite my love for the Retreat/Lounge).

Since we were on a 7-day we basically had 4.5 sea days with just 2.5 in Bermuda - this was too much time at sea on Summit for my taste. I would consider the 10-day you are on, or a 10-day Northeast cruise since those are very port intensive as well.

Lack of shade at Sunset bar, post-revolution, a definite negative.  But mostly loved the changes.

Agree. Don't understand why they changed the overhang to begin with.

2200 seems more reasonable and fair for this room today.

other thing i see on this forum is ppl saying its just a bit more for conc. or aqua.  my trip is 1999 for vernada, and 2599 and 2699 are not just a bit apart. thats significant percentage wise for the higher rooms. i guess because of longer cruise.

here's the sky pricing and i think , and im sure you agree after staying in one. that they are crazy to ask 14K for a 300 sq ft room.

also its apples to kiwi in comparison but a 7 day crown loft on oasis of the seas (and you get 2 floors)  is just 5K thru a TA i use. i could buy 2 other ones for family members 🙂 or  get the 2 BR aqua suite with 823 sq ft room and  772 sq ft wrap around balcony.  and that of course includes all specialty/internet etc etc.

i saw vid of the new one. more stylish for sure. as are the school chairs in the suites . i hope the word sustainable is on all the furniture because thats the only reason i can see for the quite special chairs throughout the redesign

14K for 10 days in an S2 on Summit is COMPLETELY INSANE. As far as the other rooms go, normally I look at $35ish per day as the breaking point for what I consider a reasonable amount to pay for AQ over a regular balcony. We don't care for the MDR so it's either Blu/Luminae or a specialty dining package for us, and you can get the specialties down to around $30/day by booking a package. On S-class this usually means we end up with a package and a regular balcony since AQ is typically closer to $50-75 more per night (in my experience, and on your cruise as well it seems). However, the limited specialty choices on M-Class would mean a LOT of repetition on a 10-night cruise if you wanted to avoid the MDR entirely. That's a tough call - in this case I might just bite the bullet and pay the extra for AQ.

if blu tables were farther apart id do blu, but in haven NCL i was never that close so i refuse to pay a premium without getting my premium space i paid for.  then theres the matter of barely any left on my cruise and id refuse to be under the pool deck

as a total aside. but since we are talking about cabins, i got an upsell for 299 on princess for short canada cruise. 1000 for a 2500 dollar cabin was sweet! 2 rooms in the bathroom and more store than you could use on a round the world cruise. it was a steal. but comparing this cabin to the new sky suites shows theres still no comparison. i believe this is a much better room

Why even ask for negatives? You should always "accentuate to positive".

Completely agree! Negativity breeds negativity. Sometimes people just read too much. Just go on your cruise with an open mind and just enjoy the experience.

The flooring in many areas is not level. This makes walking challenging for those with mobility issues. This is really noticeable in the Casino and cabin hallways.

Sometimes the food set up in the buffet didn't make sense, especially the Mexican day. The plates would be with the salsa, sour cream and guacamole and the shells and beef and beans would be at the other end.

Our shower in an accessible Sky Suite had no shelving so the soap and shampoo were on the ground. There was absolutely no drainage so our entire bathroom was wet after every shower. Near the end of our cruise we had 6 pool towels available. Royal Caribbean's accessible showers are fantastic.

We really wanted to love our first Celebrity cruise since they have accessible cabin that are full suites but it didn't happen.

We may try the Edge class.

We haven’t booked M class now for a while. It may be a minor problem to some but for us speciality dining is our ‘evening entertainment’ and M class doesn’t have what we want.

We enjoy leisurely meals of a good quality and variety in settings with a great ambience...

Murano’s is our favourite by far which isn’t on M class. Tuscan should be seen as equal on both Ship classes but the setting on S class is so much nicer. LPC is a max of once per cruise (in our opinion the LPC and friends menu is lacking). Sushi is OK but we see it as a lunch venue rather than a fine dining experience...Reflection and Silhouette also have the Lawn Grill and the Porch both of which add variety to your dining experience...

We have no other issues with the rest of the ship and if a great itinerary came up we would book Summit or another M class but by choice we would always go for S class...

So if you are happy without speciality dining or will be content with a visit to LPC, Tuscan or Sushi then you will be fine...

So why can they not get their charters set up BEFORE the cruise are released to the general public???

If it is such a regular and loyal thing, why can they and Celebrity not sit down and say “You know, we always have your charter these weeks. Would you like to make this a permanent thing so that we do not even release them to the public? Let’s make this deal.”

Sailed on Summit this past Oct and Jan. The only negative as already mentioned is lack of cover for sunset bar. Not only to get out of the sun but this past Jan there were frequent rain showers during the day which left only about 6 tables that kept dry. Staff had to rush to remove cushions and everyone moved tables under the dry area making the area extremely crowded to were you could barely get to the bar.. After a few minutes the sun comes out and the tables and chairs are all wet and not usable.

I consider going on vacation as the time to enjoy, not to look or what to know what other consider negatives. If there are some, I’ll find them myself and many times someone’s negative isn’t of any concern or importance to me.

Enjoy your cruise.

with 10 days i def gotta try the little chef making the food. but i do worry which menu ill have, i need the filet. ive read the mixed reviews of tuscan but will have to try it myself. so thats 2 nites. 3 will be in port. so thats 5 taken care of. 1 in MDR and 1 in buffet at a minimum so thats 7.  and the rest will have to be based on the experiences of the past, once on board. def have to try room service and the pool grill.

one thing i havent seen much research on the forum is bfast and lunch in mdr. where im looking forward to wearing shorts 🙂

I'm sure there are a few reasons such as itinerary publication by the cruise line, the fact they must get millions of dollars together to charter the ship, I'm sure if they're smart they want to see what their competitors are doing and when.  I mean if the cruise line published dates and rates for mid 2021 in let's say in July 2019 and you personally booked it in September 2019, I think it's silly of you to think that a private charter picking up one sailing should be off the table.   You're probably also the kind of person that would complain and demand compensation if you were on a cruise with a large specialty group that may not appeal to you simply because of their overwhelming group presence on the ship.

No - because I'm content keeping to myself and am not a bar fly. I've never asked for - much less "demanded" - compensation when stuff happens that I'm sure some people did whine and get something for.

But I do think it is absurd that a company that regularly charters a ship at the same time every year cannot negotiate in advance. They might not have to get AS much money together if the cruiseline was not having to compensate displaced passengers, which I would hope the cruiseline builds into what they charge the charter companies. I'd personally rather wait longer to book or go with a cruiseline that is far less likely to be chartered than get my hopes up and potentially book outside excursions only to have to deal with canceling them.

We are just home from our cruise on Summit from SJ.

We were last on board Summit in 2007 and we absolutely loved the recent re-fit

In our opinion:- The buffet arrangements was far far better than the S class in terms of separate station areas for different foods so no long queues. I hate the buffet usually but liked using it this trip.

Storage space in the cabin was just as good as the old layout just a different way of doing things.

The standard balcony cabin felt more spacious with the smaller settee and the smaller coffee table which we don't use anyway.

We really liked the new contemporary colour scheme and modernisation of the ship.

I personally missed the music playing in the atrium like in the S class but that's not a negative just a personal preference and there is of course the rendezvous lounge to use for dancing.

The new pool arrangements are lovely

Food and service was excellent as usual

Here is our one negative:- we booked the Tuscan Grill for a special occasion dinner and we were very disappointed. There was no special service or table cooking and we could have eaten just as well in the MDR without the $45 pp cover charge.

Last year on Eclipse our visit to Tuscan was incredible - multiple waiter service and a very special feeling that we had spent our money well.

I do think though that this was possible just an unfortunate visit but it will make us reconsider speciality in the future.

Hi

Sorry I also meant to say that we loved the new app for door entry and the cabin door numbers are nice and clear, great shower doors replace the old curtains and a European outlet meant I could use my UK Dyson hairdryer using a EU adaptor - happy days 😊
