cruisecle Posted February 8, 2020 #1 Share Posted February 8, 2020 Currently on the EDGE. Shops are very high end and they are mostly empty. Could there be a correlation?
Rare NMTraveller Posted February 8, 2020 #2 Share Posted February 8, 2020 (edited) That is the Edge. Replace Tiffanys with a Sky Lounge or Muranos and that would improve the experience. S Class did have the Omega watches. I did actually go in there. Now if you could have Breakfast at Tiffany's that would also make it a plus. That was my experience. Why do they have these high end stores that nobody is in but they are short on bars and lounges? Quiet and upscale places to have a glass of wine? Some people like to shop. IMHO there is no shopping experience on the Edge. Edited February 8, 2020 by NMTraveller
Rare Jim_Iain Posted February 8, 2020 #3 Share Posted February 8, 2020 Agree --- many upscale shops that on observation are always empty. On our cruise I never saw any shoppers in Tiffany's.
Denny01 Posted February 8, 2020 #4 Share Posted February 8, 2020 I think Tiffany’s only needs a few shoppers that buy something to make a profit for the entire cruise! Den 1

Den There is money making and cruiser experience. Tiffany's did nothing to improve my cruiser's experience. I did not see a single person in there during my 12 day cruise. My wife does kind of like the sales to get our sons a t-shirt during the cruise. This did not happen on the Edge. If she did not mention that means that is was ridiculous in price and she would have know my response 🙂 However I have paid for jewelry on cruises before. She has some beautiful jewelry, just not from the Edge. My wife is the ultimate shopper. She truly LOVES to shop. I give her 10 out of 10 for being the SAAVY shopper. Everyone loves a souvenir from their cruise. I am not sure why the Edge does not provide the shopping experience. I see my twenty something kids wearing shirts from other cruises. Every one loves a souvenir. Edited February 9, 2020 by NMTraveller

Rare Jim_Iain Posted February 9, 2020 #10 Share Posted February 9, 2020 They are laughable but I did break down and pay $25 for a golf hat. On Infinity I bought 2 on sale for $15.
Oville Posted February 9, 2020 #11 Share Posted February 9, 2020 On ourJanuary cruise the I Lounge and duty free shops were busy and we made purchases in both. Honestly glad on the Edge there was not the crazy shopping we’ve seen on other ships the last day, but that’s just my preference.
hiccups Posted February 9, 2020 #12 Share Posted February 9, 2020 My DH paid $28 for an Azamara baseball cap, which, as a bargain shopper, drove me nuts. But Azamara had given us OBC to make up for a missed port, so I figured he might as well get something he wanted.

TeeRick Posted February 9, 2020 #14 Share Posted February 9, 2020 I have always been curious how Celebrity makes money from these "shops" like Tiffanys. Is it possible they just act as the landlord and make their money on the lease of space? Then perhaps they get a small % cut on sales? If they are leasing space for a large profit then it might matter less whether the shops are full of passengers. This is the only reason I can think of as to why they dedicate so much high-end space that on the surface seems mostly empty of buyers. Some use OBC but that will not go very far in the expensive shops on Edge.

Thinking about it they should have a bar near the shops to get you into the mood to make a purchase like they do at the ports with their “free drinks” The high end shops don’t need to sell a lot of small items to make a profit it only takes a few purchases and they made more than handling a lot of junk. A salesman was at a bar drinking at a bar everyday. The BT asked what he did and was told he was in sales. He said yeah but you are here everyday how can you sell anything? The salesman said business is fantastic and his last sale was 5 years ago. The BT said 5 years and it is fantastic. . What do you sell. Could there be a correlation? On our sailing in November, the shops nearest to the Casino were filled more often than not, while shops not near were very vacant when I strolled by. On one (1) occasion each, I noted the Cartier and Tiffany doors were closed or a stanchion was placed in front of the entrances with only two to six people inside... I presumed this was a 'private' shopping session and if they purchased anything, then the shops are well worth it, IMO, even if I do not or choose not to purchase anything from them because my bank account would have laughed upon entering so loudly that the sales people would join in with it... LOL For me, the correlation test would be to stand outside of these stores in order to count the number of people who actually go in, actually purchase (if you can see that they took the items with them), or those who just browsed... Also, these types of stores are not for everyone and I Am sure they do not expect a majority of passengers to stop in to make a quick purchase either.. very targeted and I Am not one of those being targeted, on The Edge, even though I have purchased items from both NYC stores on several occasions over the years. I do love Bvlgari, to be sure and purposely stayed in a B&B right down the street from their Rome store just to visit everyday while in Rome and purchased a few items there, too... that store was not overly crowded at that time I was there but that does not mean that significant purchases were not being made regardless. I did admire some of the merchandise, not the prices, displayed in the stores on The Edge, nevertheless... bon voyage Edited February 9, 2020 by Bo1953

Rare Jim_Iain Posted February 9, 2020 #22 Share Posted February 9, 2020 I'm sure we all have our tastes and purchase habits. I think the only thing we bought on Edge was my hat and some duty free cigarettes for Iain. While off topic, I was amazed in talking with a guest. They were proudly proclaiming that they had received a FREE CRUISE from Park West. I can't even imagine what they must have spent in order to receive the gift. Celebrity does indeed get a percentage of the sales and those employed to work in the shops are not Celebrity employees. In fact, their room and board are paid by the company to Celebrity. The same group runs the shops on Crystal. In fact, I saw 2 employees on Serenity who worked in the shops on Reflection. Their approach to passengers is not the same on the two lines. On Crystal they tend to be less aggressive. Only high end shops on Crystal and no logo type shop. I will board Edge in April and see if the shops and approach to sales more closely resembles Crystal or is more like other Celebrity ships. No aggressive selling out of any of the shops, that I encountered. Polite and understated hellos or nods as you pass by and the sales people are standing outside their respective shops.. Very classy, IMO. bon voyage Edited February 9, 2020 by Bo1953
