JeffT237 Posted March 16, 2020 #3 Share Posted March 16, 2020 (edited) I feel like the 30 day suspension will get extended. The way things are moving in the country with all of the closures and quarantines it seems almost inevitable that this will happen. Just look at the things that are happening here in California which are unprecedented. Bars and restaurant closures, schools closed, 65 year olds being asked to self quarantine, and Disneyland as well as our other amusement parks are closed. I too try and avoid getting political, and if this is overkill well that is another discussion, just giving my opinion on the original posters question. Whatever your opinion is on how this has been handled so far can wait, those things can be debated and will be for long after this crisis has passed. What we need now more than ever is for our leaders to drop the politics and work together and for our citizens regardless of age or party affiliation to work together for the common good, if that's even possible. I think it is. Edited March 16, 2020 by JeffT237 misspelling

They are a much much poorer society. Many many live in close quarters in squaller. Their customs are very different. In China, the govt says jump. You say “How high?” They have a level of discipline (and fear) that we do not have here in the US to beat this in the same time frame they did.
sgmn Posted March 16, 2020 #5 Share Posted March 16, 2020 I also think there will be major country closures and cancellations of cruises until well into late spring /summer if not longer. I have two cruises booked, not holding out much hope for my late June cruise but hoping that Allure in Sept will still be a go
Billy Baltic Posted March 16, 2020 #6 Share Posted March 16, 2020 In Ireland schools and colleges closed last week. This is for initial 2 weeks but everyone knows it’s going to be longer. Some officials have said its likely to be 16 weeks. The attempt here, and a lot of Europe, is to slow the spread so the health service can handle the people who need intensive care. hazence Posted March 16, 2020 #8 Share Posted March 16, 2020 (edited) The truth is, no matter where your politics lie, either side would have made mistakes...just different ones. Democrats would never have banned visitors from infected China and other key areas...when Trump did. They were furious about it! So having an influx of possibly highly contagious people would have helped the situation...how? Both sides have and will make mistakes...their policies just have different vulnerabilities. Can we please...STOP! Why do we need someone to blame...whether it’s the cruise line, the airlines, China, Democrats, Republicans, what does all this negativity do for us? Let’s put our energy instead into seeing how we can help in our communities...check on the elderly, give to food banks. There will be “backpack children” who rely on that assistance, those meals at school...who now will have school closed. There are people whose concerns are their next meal, not their next cruise. If you want to see this cruise industry or cruise line survive and you can afford to take the cruise credit, maybe do that. Stop the Blame game. Stop the political snark. Let’s put our energy into pulling together and getting through this crisis by doing whatever WE can, wherever we can....and we all can do SOMETHING even hunkered down in our homes. What was it President Kennedy said...”Ask not what your country can do for YOU...ask what YOU can do for your country!” Time to dust that attitude off again. Get over ourselves... I mean, if we're going to play the generation card, I've seen a lot more of the older generation insisting that they aren't going to stop their lives and that the government can't tell them what to do and where to go. The younger generation already uses drive thrus and food delivery (Uber Eats, Door Dash, etc) extensively so staying home is actually a positive for a lot of them.

Some I imagine would rather be drafted into a war than not allowed to be with other people. I am introverted, so being alone does not bother me too much.

hazence Posted March 16, 2020 #23 Share Posted March 16, 2020 I don’t think the point of that statement was to disparage the young. I think the point was to put the “sacrifice” in perspective.. Heres another perspective: our daughter is a Mayo trained breast specialist. She sees some very difficult cases. I asked her what she was hearing from her colleagues at Mayo and she showed me the statistics we are all seeing. Of those infected, over 80% will have mild cases and will recover easily. Of those who have a more serious case, still the vast majority will survive and recover. We all know these “averages.” It was what she said after this that gave me another perspective..... She sighed and said,..”If only I could give some of these young women I see the same kind of statistical rates of survival.” Every day of the week, someone receives a diagnosis with statistics far worse than those for this virus. 5

We live in a senior community, but we didn’t just come home from a cruise. All clubs were closed as well as all the public areas including pools, gyms and libraries. Before the snarky remarks come in, the pools and gyms are two of the most popular spots. When the snowbirds (winter residents who can’t take the snow and cold), people are lined up, at the door when they open at 6am.

Several States are making it difficult for them to go to the Gym, Restaurants, Movie Theaters and Casinos - NY, NJ, CT & MD have initiated this to go into effect tonight. Most are only allowing you to go via the drive thru for food. I don't think these "Seniors" want to catch this virus.
