I have sailed on three of those ships and five times on the Monarch.  Very sad to see.

Very sad.  Our first cruise was on the Fantasy, second was the Monarch, and our third was on the Sovereign.  All were back between 1996-1998.

^ That's a different section of Aliaga from other previous ships - a second CMV ship (Marco Polo) is due there in a week+.

There's a quick peek in this video (Astor beaching) of the other section of Aliaga with cruise ships - doesn't look like meaningful progress lately.

The old Carnival Celebration was my first cruise 31 1/2 years ago.  That ship has been sailing a long time and it has not been looking so good the last couple of years.

That's a very shallow beach and they can only bring the ships in so far. I assume they eventually drag them further up the beach but they could start dismantling a ways out like this one.

I wish that yard had a cam that we could check on the ships when we wanted.  Would like to see what is left of the Sovereign and Monarch.

The work on commercial vessels seem to be progressing faster than the cruise ships.

Looks like sometime in 2021 Majesty will become the one and only of its kind.

Alang looks like a MUCH bigger scrap area than Aliaga.  There are ships spread across about 6 miles of beach at Alang on Google Maps.  Several oil platforms there as well.

 

While looking for info on Alang, I found a link to a 2004 documentary called "Shipbreakers", that's focused on Alang.  Haven't watched it yet but many of the YouTube comments are about exploiting the people who do this work.

Interesting.  Someone forgot to turn off the transponder on the Marco Polo even though it is showing the location as beached.
