lazey1 Posted September 6, 2020 #52 Share Posted September 6, 2020 My first cruise ever was an Alaskan tour/cruise on the Noordam III in June of 1989 and we came aboard in Skagway. I do not remember the name of our captain. I have very fond memories of having Captain Jonathon Mercer in charge on 3 seperate cruises. Also very fond memories of Cal Ripkin. What a nostalgic day.

CrabbyPatti Posted September 7, 2020 #55 Share Posted September 7, 2020 Thanks for the trivia on the wine...........just never even occurred to me you could have "vegan" and "non vegan" wines. It made me laugh when I thought about it.

I might as well add one more celebration today - DH and I are celebrating our 51st wedding anniversary today. Yep, we were young but somehow it worked out! Last summer we celebrated with our kids and grandkids on a Med cruise, then went to Alaska on Amsterdam on the actual Sept. 6 date. Thanks goodness we were able to do that because if it were our 50th this year things would have been a LOT different. Congratulations on your 51st Wedding Anniversary

It takes a block, tackle and chain to accomplish this and the platform will partially stick out over the dock. Very important for the security officer who calls out the distance to go for the correct gangway position to the captain or staff captain on the bridge, to also make sure there are no obstacles in the form of bollards, water stations, dock ladders, etc. in the way of the Marshaling Area break doors Two of my female security guards, Geralyn and Cherilyn on the dock at Ketchikan, AK As stated before, training and drilling never stops onboard. This is refresher training on how to operate the water tight doors (the big yellow ones in the background - they can easily snap off an arm or leg if you stand in their way as they're closing) conducted in the Engine Room Workshop This is crew payday - a popular event as you can imagine - conducted by the crew officer and his clerk in the forward Crew Mess on A-Deck Sometimes you luck out and have your significant other - in this case the child bride (on Volendam's starboard bridge wing with 4/O Laura from the UK) join you for a portion of your contract. Some officer wifes join for the entire contract. Mine is still a working girl until this November 🙂 "HAL Academy" is an education program which consists of core and specialist courses, a lot of them mandatory, required to successfully complete in order to work onboard. This is such a session inside the ship's training room with 2/O Andre from Latvia, Chief Electrician Willem from the Netherlands, Facilities Manager Corne from South Africa, Captain Pieter Bos from the Netherlands and Shop Manager Jo from the U.K. Thanks for sharing all this information. I recognised Pieter Bos immediatly. He was a great Master. I was with him on the Volendam, Oosterdam and Noordam. A great Captain and a fine gentlman.

Sharon in AZ Posted September 7, 2020 #61 Share Posted September 7, 2020 We had a big day today. We had my Mom over for lunch with our son and granddaughter for her 91st birthday. Her birthday was on Friday but we celebrated today. It was the first time she has been to our house since the Covid lockdown. It was a wonderful time! Have a great evening everyone!

We also got married in September 1969. 😄 Last year we renewed our vows on extended Med cruises on the NS and Koningsdam. I couldn’t agree more that we both had good timing to have had our 50th last year and not now. 😉. Thank you Rich and Roy for everything you do. It is very much appreciated. Today we visited Little Big Horn Battlefield. Will reach CO tomorrow and I hear the temps will drop from 95 (today) to 31 tomorrow in Estes Park—even colder in RMNP. 😳 I’m sure glad I packed cold weather clothes along with hot. Photos of the field and spot where Custer fell. Edited September 7, 2020 by Cruising-along

Here's a selection from the wall at Funchal when I last visited there on the Prinsendam: HAL ships: .............................................................. Interesting story about the logo mural above the one for Ryndam, Roy. It is a Saga Cruises ship (can't tell which one) with Capt. Nick Sunderland as her master. For several years, Nick Sunderland, who hails from the UK, was a HAL chief officer/staff captain. He was my boss during my very first contract on Maasdam and I worked for him during several additional contracts later on, all on Maasdam. He then left HAL to go to Saga where he was promoted to Captain. Great guy and well deserved promotion!
