Well thanks to the Daily,  I now know that all wine is NOT Vegan. In fact it may not even be vegetarian. Anyone else surprised by this?
 

The reason that all wines are not vegan or even vegetarian-friendly has to do with how wine is clarified and a process called fining. ... Traditionally the most commonly used fining agents were casein (a milk protein), albumin (egg whites), gelatin (animal protein) and isinglass (fish bladder protein).

Thank you , Roy, for your reminder of Cal Ripkin's achievement! Twenty-five years ago, I was in Boston for business and decided to attend a Red Sox game. When Cal broke the record and received recognition in Baltimore, the game in Boston stopped, so everyone in the stands could see the ceremony on the big screen. Because Baltimore & Boston are traditional rivals, I thought this  was a very classy example of sportsmanship!

For those of you who have never been to Skagway, AK and/or have not seen the "logo wall" at the railroad dock, there used to be a colorful tradition there for the crew of cruise ships who called at Skagway to paint their ship/company logo on that wall right behind the White Pass railway track. The painting was usually done by the ship's Bo'sun and/or one of his sailors.

 

That activity is now a lot harder to accomplish (is really not done anymore) after the railroad dock was renovated some years back and you can no longer just walk up to the rock wall - there is now a gap between it and the dock. For those who have been around the block once or twice with HAL, you might recognise some of the names - the (then) chief officer of the Noordam III back in 1994 would be one of them, as would the captain of the Ryndam in 2000 who just retired 😉

I have seen thid many timrs when I have docked at the Railtoad Dock..The Volendam always docked there on Saturay morning. Those were the days my friend. I hope they come back next year.

Copper, more great memorabilia!  Haven't been to Skagway for a number of years, but do remember seeing some of these.  Do you know if they are still visible?  By the way, it is Sunday and normally here in Florida we would be looking forward to the return of "Sailaways" from Ft Lauderdale/Port Everglades.  HAL "pop quiz" questions, too, with extravagant prizes.  Maybe with the Signature sisters headed to the Caribbean, there will be some presence this coming winter to watch. I look for 7 day cruises at first with HMC and maybe not much else.  Your thoughts?

Two of Volendam's boatmen / Lifesaving Attendants working to install the platform on A-Deck's Marshalling Area for off-loading & loading the luggage of those pax leaving and joining in Skagway. It takes a block, tackle and chain to accomplish this and the platform will partially stick out over the dock. Very important for the security officer who calls out the distance to go for the correct gangway position to the captain or staff captain on the bridge, to also make sure there are no obstacles in the form of bollards, water stations, dock ladders, etc. in the way of the Marshaling Area break doors

As stated before, training and drilling never stops onboard. This is refresher training on how to operate the water tight doors (the big yellow ones in the background - they can easily snap off an arm or leg if you stand in their way as they're closing) conducted in the Engine Room Workshop

 

 

This is crew payday - a popular event as you can imagine - conducted by the crew officer and his clerk in the forward Crew Mess on A-Deck 

 

 

Sometimes you luck out and have your significant other - in this case the child bride (on Volendam's starboard bridge wing with 4/O Laura from the UK) join you for a portion of your contract. Some officer wifes join for the entire contract. Mine is still a working girl until this November 🙂 

 

 

"HAL Academy" is an education program which consists of core and specialist courses, a lot of them mandatory, required to successfully complete in order to work onboard. This is such a session inside the ship's training room with 2/O Andre from Latvia, Chief Electrician Willem from the Netherlands, Facilities Manager Corne from South Africa, Captain Pieter Bos from the Netherlands and Shop Manager Jo from the U.K.

I do know that the 2000 Mercer one (and presume virtually all the others) were as recently as July 2018.

Copper, the only time I have sailed with Captain Albert was when he was Chief Officer on Rotterdam V in 1997, 3 years after the Noordam.

As far as I know, yes the logo paintings are still fully visible off the Railway Dock in Skagway. There are just none being added anymore. You could be right re: the Dam ships! A lot, an awful lot, will depend on the situation with the pandemic later this year and into the 2021, local/federal regulations dealing with it, and also the experiences of the Costa and AIDA ships (like HAL, belonging to the Carnival Plc Group) and their new protocols as they start cruising with pax in Europe as we speak. Time will tell, keep your fingers crossed!

Today’s wine is decently priced between $15 & $20. It has very good ratings. And for the first time the intro description used the word “vegan”. This surprised me. Aren’t all wines vegan? I will try to google this later, and if I learn differently will share. In the meantime this sounds like a decent wine to try.

Thanks again for keeping us focused, Rich. I always have to fight procrastination, since my last name is part of that word! LOL I'd like to finish a book (I've renewed it twice) sometime this week! I love the rocks that have been left in our local community park throughout this pandemic. 

My kids are all singers and I can never remember the words. Now I have a name for myself. Like @gigianne I'm going to put the drink on my list!

Congratulations, @St.LouisCruisers !  We celebrated our 30th anniversary last October in Rome and on the Nieuw Statendam, Best of the Med cruise. I wanna go back!

Interesting! I'm like your DH...watermelon is the ONLY melon I eat. DH likes everything BUT watermelon. However, he had that combination when we did the Rocky Mountaineer (can't remember which stop), and he hated the proscuitto. He can't understand why ham would be cold. He likes all meat hot and cooked to cinders. smh

I was just listening to this on our Blue Jays broadcast. Buck Martinez had some great memories of that day.

 

It's going to be a quiet weekend I think. Nothing planned but the baseball games on TV, and maybe some movies. I need to look at our list of projects for the summer, and move them to the fall list. Happy Procrastination Day!

Haha!  I had never noticed that we had company.  That was a favourite spot for them to come ashore, though, one little area with no snow on the ground.  They came up continually.

 

 

But they were few and far between compared with South Georgia's Kings!

I have some similar pictures of the King penguins at Salisbury Plain at South Georgia Island.  I felt like I was viewing a crowd at a rock concert because they were standing so close to each other, and there were thousands of them.  An awesome experience!
