We were in Oslo on our first cruise. We had a wonderful day and enjoyed every moment.  At one point we were walking past the Canadian Ambassador’s residence. I think there is something very special about seeing your flag flying in another country.

I do like poutine but try to have it very rarely. It is definitely on my comfort food list.

Canada is receiving more and more vaccines and we are hopeful that we will receive ours next month.

Yes, but a pitiful amount.  There has to be enough to either put you into diabetic shock, or you have to call the dentist because your teeth hurt.

Never tried it here - it looked too greasy to me. And too much heavy gravy to drown out the taste.   Now, your Costco might be different than mine.

Yes, but it won’t be coming in to the country for a while.   We’ve had  a big delivery of the AstraZeneca vaccine, which will be used for people under 65.    It has an expiration date at end April though, I believe, so needs to get used up.

It is a beautiful picture but I suspect it is photoshopped.  I have never seen swans in salt water before.  Am I being too critical?

It may or may not be photo shopped. I know they do not drink salt water but I have seen swans swimming on salt water.

There is, and there’s chocolate on top, but you almost need a magnifying glass to find them. They tried to make up for it by making the base 3X too thick. Oh, and the custard layer in Nanaimo Bars is basically heavy icing stiffened with custard powder and quite solid. It’s not even remotely like the custard you would get in, well, custard.

We often see black swans swimming in the sea near us, so it may be a real picture. It’s beautiful anyway, and I have saved it to my iPad.

I’m putting this on my “to do” list for whenever we make it to Canada. I’d love to do a cruise up the coast, like HAL used to do from Boston.

 

My grandfather was from Nova Scotia. We used to believe he was French Canadian. Then someone looked at the genealogy, and it shows a grandmother apparently leaving Boston with children and going to Canada in 1775.....  🧐 Somehow I don’t think that qualifies my cousins and me for the DAR.

We visited Vigeland Sculpture Park on a HAL tour. There were 2 couples with us that were using walkers and having a difficult time keeping up. Several of us were trying to take photographs and we also had a difficult time keeping up. After about 1 hour one of the guides told us if we didn't keep up we would have to leave the tour. Hubby and I were able to keep up but not able to take any more photos and we certainly were not the only ones. The poor souls that required walkers were escorted out of the park then made to wait another 2 hours until the bus picked them up. HAL had a lot of complaints about that. 

That is horrible when when a guide doesn’t/won’t take the abilities of the participants into consideration.  Our first time in Oslo, we took a tour through the tourist bureau.  When we got to the sculptor park, the guide went into a prolonged description of every statue, more information than we needed.  By the time we were half way through the park, I was so bored, Inwas ready to run screaming from the park.  At least, everyone could keep up or catch up with the group.

So 3 years ago today, Zaandam was docked in Montevideo. My journal reflects that we had to wait for commercial traffic to clear before we could enter the harbor. 

I had signed up for HAL’s tour of the city and a visit to the Carnival museum. As I had spent no time in the city when I visited the city in 2013 (I went out to Colonia Sacramento), it was nice to get to see a bit of it.

Our guide was a Social Worker who shared his insights into the local culture. One of his other jobs was working with disadvantaged children, and he lead a group that competed in Carnival. He and his family were regular participants for a couple generations. So his insight made the museum more interesting. (I was going to do it on my own, but I know I would have walked out without much understanding.)

We had a “light” lunch at the museum (Uruguayan “parrilla” with sausage sandwiches, cheese and wine) and a drumming demonstration and “parade” which was a participatory event. (I kept busy with my camera so I wouldn’t get “volunteered”.😉) 

 

Costumes are frequently made from whatever people find or have on hand.  This one was made with coke bottle lids. Another was made (I kid you not) of condoms. Yep.

A little late to this party tonight!  But had a productive day considering all the rain we had.  Tomorrow’s weather should be better.

we really enjoyed our time in Oslo. Thanks to those who posted pictures.

Hunter is doing fine, thanks for asking. He lost 4 teeth. He is 11 years old so not surprising. The growth on his tail ok. He is sleepy but eating  and he can eat his regular food. Bandit was happy to see him come home.

Note to Canadian cooks:  we in the southern US are sorely deprived and uneducated about these treats. Please help bring us up to speed. I'm happy to be a taste tester for anyone's recipe and promise to be entirely partial regarding local differences.
