DeSantis nearing compromise on cruise vaccination requirements

I think some people think that if cruises from Florida are permitted to sail with vaccinated-only passengers, that suddenly all of the cruise lines will require vaccinations.  I am not sure how well that will work with Carnival and Disney suddenly dumping families.

Carnival (at least outside Alaska) is headed down the test cruise route. Obviously not a great deal of time left, but if the CDC sticks to its promised turnaround time of 5 business days, we could see test cruises as late as a week-and-a-half before the revenue sailing begins.

Unlike Royal Caribbean, Carnival will not be soliciting volunteers for the test cruises from the general public.

Sounds to me like vaccinated to start. That's in the best interest of public health.

Indeed with that comment at the end about "...the reason we are doing vaccinated now..." is the nail in the coffin for mixed vax and anti-vaxxer passengers to start.

Disney is not trusting the general public to follow simple instructions and is probably going with "Volunteers" from Disneyworld and similar. They are already indoctrinated in Disney culture and would no doubt be fired if they screwed things up - despite what the CDC guidelines are.

The jury is still out as to whether or not Carnival will actually do test cruises. They are keeping those cards close to their chest. No dates have been released or leaked.

Vaccinated offers the best chance of restart cruises being successful and a cruise line not going under.

There is absolutely no data on spread from vaccinated individuals.  Yes, they can get it but the data on spread is not complete.  Is there a chance?  Probably.  But very, very, vary rare according to public data.  As of now, with collected data so far, one dose of the vaccine halves transmission.  Two doses pretty much wipes out any chance of transmission.  Possible?  Yes.  Rare though.  Only time will tell and we will see what will happen with the variants.

I've never been on a ship with 10k people. They could've allowed reduced capacity and they haven't. Other countries have done reduced capacity cruises. I've been at a resort for a week. I've been at a hotel for four days. I've been on an excursion in Cozumel. I've been on packed airplanes. I've been in really packed security and customs lines. The CDC could've worked with the cruise lines and they haven't.

I agree that now we have vaccines we should be cruising ASAP.  Oh wait that's right they are starting back In the next few weeks.  I don't know what ships you have been on, but they do have ships with 10k.  The CDC is working with the cruise lines right now exactly when they should be.

Elevators are a concern, but exposure time is a factor. How long are you planning to be in an elevator?

Hopefully not long as long as one of those darn kids doesn't punch every floor

I’ve been on all of the carnival classes except spirit and I don’t think I’ve had 5k on a ship yet. I know RCCL claims oasis class is the largest cruise ship in the world and they list double occupancy at 5600 and max capacity at 6600.

I can go off to other countries and do whatever I want. All the cdc requires is a negative COVID test within 48 hours of my return. That’s what it should be for cruise ships. A negative COVID test within 48 hours of the return or you don’t get off the ship. The ship can have special quarantine rooms just like the resorts do.

Didn't say anything of the sort.  I said when Texas decided to reopen a few months ago, national news went crazy and said it was a huge mistake. The President said Texas was full of Neanderthals because they reopened the state after over a year being closed and having strict mandates.  Their doom and gloom forecast was a bust.  Numbers continued to spiral downward.  Right now, the 7 day average is at its lowest points since March 2020.  We had many days with ZERO deaths.  That is a good thing.  Nothing to "SMH" about.  Something to applaud.  The media was saddened by the good news and downward trend.

What a bunch of junk.  No media was sad about the numbers going down.  They are spiraling down and I am on record that vaccinated people should be cruising.

Symphony of the Seas is 8,880.  I am so sorry I exaggerated my number so much.  There is a huge difference between going to a whole other country and being trapped on a cruise ship eating and drinking with the same people for a week or more.  Apples and Oranges.  It's amazing how I get steamrolled for writing completely sensible common sense things.  It is so tiring arguing with people who are saying the equivalent of the sky is purple, but I will not agree to disagree with someone arguing the sky is purple.

So if the ship is in port, and will now be considered in international waters, will FL no longer be able to charge taxes on your purchases (i.e. drinks).

I was thinking the exact same thing.  Also, if that is considered international waters, then all the shops and the casino could be open.  The notion of it being international waters is nonsense.

Have you been to Europe lately? Just wondering because you still have to meet the entry requirements which could be proof of vaccination, quarantine, testing, and proof of insurance.

Don’t get off the ship? Kidding? What is the plan for when the ship leaves port for the next cruise? A positive test at disembarkation means you quarantine elsewhere at your expense.

No I haven’t been to Europe lately. I’ve been to Mexico twice in the past two months and know the requirements to return because I’ve done it.

Nope not kidding. 50% capacity. 50% available for quarantine means there’s no problem when the ship has to leave for the next cruise.

Royal lists it as 5500 double 6800 max. Not that this really matters. Most ships aren’t that big so it’s just ridiculous to talk about 10k  people on cruise ships like it’s a common thing.

I don’t think it works that way. It may make sense to you, but I’m pretty sure the cruise lines have no intention of being a quarantine holding pen.

I have not seen any policy from Carnival, but Regent Seven Seas spells it out in the fine print. If a passenger tests positive at any time, he can be put off the ship to quarantine and return home at his own expense. He will get a pro-rated refund, but the treatment is not so generous for those who are deceptive or uncooperative. No refund.

Getting on the ship is just the beginning. I don’t think you’ve thought this through.

You may not like the idea. That’s fine. It’s what resorts in Mexico are doing and I don’t see any reason why it wouldn’t work with ships. In my four months of interaction with other resort goers I haven’t heard of anyone testing positive so I  wouldn’t expect all of those quarantine rooms to be necessary.

Whether I like it or not has nothing to do with it. It is not going to happen.

What the resorts in Mexico are doing is not a good indicator of what is happening in the rest of the world. I can’t say how complete your information is about positive tests, but it does happen.

Just be sure you are fully informed of the policies before you get on a cruise ship so you don’t have any nasty surprises when things don’t follow your wishful thinking.

The resorts in Mexico let you stay an extra couple of weeks if you test positive. Not sure cruise lines would like that. I've read about several people stuck in Mexico. Here is one:

I like that idea. Why should the unvaccinated hold up the line as they wait for test results. Give them a window time in the morning to take the test and then give them an area to sit and wait for their results.

And if even one test comes

back positive, the entire group will be denied boarding.
I don’t give a rats ass on who is or is not vaccinated when I go to the store. But this is different and I’ll be damned if I’m gonna let a few stubborn people think only of themselves thus possibly ruining my cruise as we all get quarantined. Or even worse, the cruise lines get shutdown again.

In the meantime, those vaccinated can proceed to board as soon as the ship is cleared for new passengers. Just like normal times for them.

I’d also like to see a wristband system. If you’re vaccinated you get the wristband and do what you want and go where you want.

No wristband? Masks at all times in public and buffets are off limit!!

Off to the internment camps for you unvaxxed scum.how dare you refuse the faucci ouchie.no wonder there was a toilet paper shortage.if I don't cruise I'll buy a few more of them "ghost" guns that make me so giddy.who am I kidding? I'll buy them anyway.

Since Carnival has already put protocols in place for fully vaccinated cruises (Alaska) what if they offer two types of cruises as the industry gets bsck up and running? Some ships that require all passengers be vaccinated and some that do not. This way they offer sailings for all demographics, appealing to those who want to sail only with vaccination while also appealing to families with children and those who do not want/can’t get the vaccine.

I figured someone would search for an article. I’m not saying nobody has tested positive. In the resorts that I follow with people online the past few months nobody has said they’ve tested positive or known someone who tested

positive.

It depends on the resort. The RIUs have the 10 days or 2 week deal. I was at Planet Hollywood and they didn’t have that offer. Theirs was you stay at a reduced rate. My next one is Barcelo Maya Riviera and I haven’t even looked at their policy.

I think the nurse had a $30 insurance policy that covered expenses.
