Reserving sunbeds ( old chestnut)

She Who Must Be Obeyed and I stay at a resort in Hawaii approximately every other year for several years.  As chair hogs started to proliferate, the resort solved it.  The resort has a pool attendant and little pop up flags on the back of each lounger. The attendant goes through every thirty minutes and flips up the flags for any loungers without a body in it.  The next time he comes through, if an unoccupied chair is still "flagged", he clears it.

Seems a bit outdated, what we need is some sort of app and a cost involvement to people not on time expired beds.  Can't think of exact details as I do not have a smart phone.

Realistically the best way of repossessing a sunbed that has been taken out of circulation by chairhogs is to take over the chair but to move it to a slightly different location.  They are not serially numbered and all look the same.  People remember "Their Chair" by where it is located.

Disappointed to see that this anti social activity is happening on a cruise ship.  I have had many arguments in resort hotels over this scummy activity.

As I am a big chap (6ft 2 and 18 stone ex boxer) I happily take towels of loungers that have not been used for some time.  I take great effort in folding their items up neatly and lay them nearby as I have great respect for other people property.  I just wish others to also have respect for their fellow passengers and dont hog the damn loungers!!

We were on the same cruise as the OP. We like to sunbathe, and got up very early to get the beds we wanted. At no point during the day were all of our beds left unattended. We went for lunch separately etc. Had the same beds every day, but we didn’t go back to bed once getting them at 6:30am!

The problem was it being a week of sea days. Usually you get 1/2 on a weeks cruise. And the fact the ship is obviously catered for colder weather, so there are no outdoor sun beds in the middle pool area/around the forward pool. I know Arvia will have the retractable roof, but Iona will not always be a cold weather ship. The beds around the promenade are not practical as you can’t turn them around if the ship/sun moves. I do wonder what it will be like at full capacity

As a 5ft 9, puny lightweight with no boxing skills, I would not feel confident enough to take that risk

But next time I'm cruising if I se you I will happily take the towels off the adjacent sunbed!😇

The Mrs read out to me from a social media an incident with sunbeds on the Iona

yesterday. A old gent asked about some seats that had towels on them and was told

they had been empty for several hours ,so he removed one towel and decided to use

the bed and got clawed arm by a disgruntled woman on her return .

Give me my own balcony everyday .. so sad that things are getting like this .:classic_sad:

So that was an assault then, was the disgruntled woman arrested on return to the GB?

It’s simple - want a sun bed? Get yourself bottom out of bed and stop complaining!  So many people walk past me moaning at 11am that there are no beds - what do they expect me to do?  Give them mine?! No way, I get up early, grab a coffee and sit with my bed for as long as I need it - apart from toilet visits.  I’m so fed up with people complaining that people are up early grabbing beds - I get up early because I choose to and like the early mornings on cruise ships - always have and always will!  Yes  some people do reserve beds and leave them for a while - their decision - I always make sure we stay with ours apart from grabbing something to eat - which we have on the bed too!!!!!!  Don’t always assume early risers are bad people!!

You miss the point, no one is complaining about the way you describe your use of sunbeds. However there are many people who leave their towels on the sunbed for hours without using them, and others "reserve" sunbeds on both sides of the ship so they can stay in the sun, or reserve another lot of beds in the shade for when they get too hot. These are the ones that people are complaining about.

Maybe the answer is to charge for sunbeds by the hour, as they do on a Caribbean island.

All exactly right, but on these huge ships, there aren;t enough sunbeds for everyone and personally I have removed towels more than once.  Never had the problem on the small ships with either P&O or Fred O.

They probably don’t need sunbeds for everyone. We very rarely use them - I can probably count on one hand the amount of times I’ve used one, and that was only for half an hour max. My parents and husband never ever use them and the children aren’t keen either apart from Movie under the stars late at night.

I wonder if that is why Iona has the high glass screens along the prom. deck - to stop irrate people throwing loungers overboard in a battle for 'ownership'?  Lol

loungers or the people who are lounging, or rather NOT lounging?

I think the screens are there to shelter people from the normal howling gale and noticed that the loungers protected by the transverse screens had towels clipped on them first

I prefer a seat to a lounger and was happy to see that Iona has lots of seats along the prom deck

Yes, it would make sense to have one towel per person in the cabin, which can be put in a bin on deck when used. New towels could be placed in the cabin at evening service.

With there cabin No. printed in large No. so everyone knows who is abusing the situation.

There is a far simpler method, and you can have a relaxing lie in.

Just have a quiet word with the pool chair guy, point to where you would like your towels to appear each morning and slip them an appropriate ‘tip’. Works in hotels across the world.

Knowing how much you like YouTube, thought you'd appreciate this. No point in getting angry about something so petty.

I thought it amusing anyway.

"Many a true word",lol. That happened on the Sea Princess in 2007 on our 1st cruise in the Carib.Apparently the week before,a Brit wedding party got into a drunken row and chairs were thrown overboard.I think they got their wedding on a remote desert island the following day.

It's a problem that will only get worse the bigger the ship.  A ship at maximum can only have equivalent of one deck's worth open air space. In old days if you have 4 cabin decks they shared the one open air deck with plenty of  chairs per person. Then it went up to 6 cabin decks things got tight, then 8 cabin decks even tighter Now as you get 10 or more on massive ships problems are inevitable.

Don't blame people it the bigger ships that are getting less and less open space per passenger . Then of course paid for sunbeds like the retreat make it less space for everyone else.

How about those folk who get up at silly o'clock, put towels on beds in both sides of the ship for when the ship moves , or the sun changes sides and then go back to bed. Is that OK?.

I CANNOT BELIEVE what I am reading I knew people booked their chairs for  the day and then left them and always thought this should be patrolled in some way but I NEVER thought people would be so naughty as to book sunbeds on both side of the ship call me naive

I once was at buffet for lunch trying to get an outside table no tables available but spotted 2 spare chairs at a table with a couple sitting at the table and I asked if we could join them to be told no we are playing a game !!! could not believe it

Except all those extra decks are balcony cabins and ship designers plan for people to use those for sunbathing, completely ignoring the fact people want to socialise on holiday or that one side of the ship is in shade.

Having just come off Iona, I can concur that a few beds were reserved for long periods. I also heard about the clawing incident, disgraceful behaviour. We also witnessed a family of four reserving beds by the Infinity Pool on deck 17 and another four on the port side of the same deck so they could go for a smoke !

A mixture of passengers, with men wearing shorts below decks on the Celebration Night. A lovely ship and returning in February.

I can't quite agree on this. Those extra decks have miniscule balconies like those on Britannia where you can't even have two people sitting comfortably, let alone sunbathe. They are driving you elsewhere to spend money or you have to pay extra for the few cabins with better balconies.
