Rare rafinmd Posted August 24, 2022 #26 Share Posted August 24, 2022 Today's sunrise is from a 2013 New England/Canada on MS Veendam. It was taken August 24 before our arrival and disembarkation in Boston: Roy 32
ClippyJoe Posted August 24, 2022 #27 Share Posted August 24, 2022 We would stop at the Howard Johnson in Portsmouth on our way to Maine for an ice cream. It was just special and signaled that summer had started.
smitty34877 Posted August 24, 2022 #28 Share Posted August 24, 2022 Good morning. We are stuck in a humid weather pattern here but the rain will hold off for a few days. We recently watched on Britbox a documentary about Pompeii that was quite good. I like the quote and the meal looks interesting. We have not been to the port. Dinner plans were decided by the executive chef earlier and she has commenced chopping for a bean and pasta soup. I soaked the beans last night and cooked them earlier so that the soup would come together well. Tana is amazing in that she always tries to do at least one thing every day that is challenging. The walk to the kitchen from her room is about forty feet and it can be tough for her depending on the day. Have a great day everyone. Terry

Seasick Sailor Posted August 24, 2022 #30 Share Posted August 24, 2022 Good morning Dailyites. As Lenda stated it's a cloudy humid morning getting to 89. I had a nice walk with my visiting pup and a cool breeze. Debbie thank you for the recipes today. I really enjoy reading the history behind them. Yesterday we had a great lunch at Fish City. I had scallops and shrimp with beurre blanc sauce over mashed potatoes and fresh spinach. I ate the whole thing and could have licked the plate. Allen enjoyed his shrimp and grits. Today I'm having a manicure. Tonight we are joining friends for a Beach Boys tribute in the ballroom. Hope they don't celebrate "weird music" day. Stay well, prayers to all Daily-ites friends and family. Xx

dfish Posted August 24, 2022 #32 Share Posted August 24, 2022 We always stopped at Howard Johnson's in Niagara Falls on our way to and from Grandma's in Binghamton, New York. I guess my parents felt it was safe to stop there with six rambunctious kids that had been trapped in the car for half a day. 21
1ANGELCAT Posted August 24, 2022 #33 Share Posted August 24, 2022 (edited) Good morning and thanks for the update It’s a sunny day here and tomorrow the heat returns. Fluff is channeling her brother Houdini as she somehow managed to get out of her onesie, so I guess it’s back to the cone. Iconic restaurants , Elby’s Big Boy and Ponderosa Steakhouse along with some local favorites, Boehringers Ice Cream and Schell’s for hamburger bbq. Blessings and prayers to all on our lists.🙏❤️ Edited August 24, 2022 by 1ANGELCAT
ger_77 Posted August 24, 2022 #34 Share Posted August 24, 2022 Good morning, thanks for the Fleet Report and Daily! I don't think we've visited any iconic American restaurants, but we've seen Vesuvius when we visited Pompeii. Whenever we hear strange music on the radio, DH and I turn to each other and one of us says: "I won't buy it for you if you won't buy it for me." LOL It's a cool, humid morning here on the "frozen tundra". We're sitting at 13C (55F) with 88% humidity - a strange thing for us for sure, but it's supposed to head up to around 27 (80F) this afternoon. I'm sure the humidity will disappear once it begins to warm up. Sadly, yesterday I noticed that a few leaves on the Virginia Creeper vines on the back fence are beginning to turn colour. And when we went for a walk the other night, also saw some of the poplar trees have yellow tinge to the leaves. Sigh. It's always disconcerting when you receive an email from HAL with the words "Itinerary Change" in the title. This morning there were 2 emails (I guess they really wanted to bring it to our attention) and it seems that on our return from Barcelona in November, we're not docking in Ft Lauderdale, but Miami instead. Now people are scrambling to make arrangements to get back to FLL in time for their flights, or are changing departures if possible. We used Flight Ease and upon checking our return flights, discover we aren't even seated together, so I'm going to have to work on that. I love today's menu suggestion - and remember eating it many times when we were in Japan. DH hates runny eggs (isn't a fan of eggs in general), so he'd always ask for no egg on his, but it was still delicious. While we still have a lot of leftovers in the fridge, DH has said he's up to his eyebrows in Chinese food, so has made the suggestion that we go out for dinner tonight. Like I'm going to argue with that! I have no idea what's going to be on our plates tonight, but I'm sure it will be good. I'm also going to order a glass of wine - my first in over 2 weeks, to see if my liver still works. Prayers for everyone who needs them, cheers for the celebrations. Stay safe everyone! Smooth Sailing! 🙂🙂🙂 Gerry

John( DF) got a casino offer and it included a New Year's cruise on the Volendam so we will be doing a 7 day B2B with a 74 day. We have tried to rent a home in Florida for the winter but the cost was prohibitive. We will be spending almost all of our winter on a BHB. I plan to be on that cruise and the one before and the 74. I guess I too will miss winter. Just dropped by to say hi. Son is in his house. But doing all that meant that my house was neglected. Now I have to play catch up and get it ready for company soon.

Heartgrove Posted August 24, 2022 #41 Share Posted August 24, 2022 Thank you Rich for the Daily Report, thank you Roy for the Cares and Celebration Report, and thank you Debbie for today's recipes. And thank you all for being here! Received notice like a number of "Dailyites" that our Oosterdam Transatlantic will arrive in Miami instead of Ft. Lauderdale in November. Just curious when the last time a HAL ship used the Miami Cruise Port? I have used it only once for an NCL cruise in 1997. Live4cruises Posted August 24, 2022 #43 Share Posted August 24, 2022 (edited) A couple of iconic Tulsa restaurants. In the past year, one met the fate @marshhawkmentioned. It was a family-owned white table cloth restaurant with good food and good service. After about 52 years, it was sold to a local entrepreneur who has other restaurants in town. They did some updating of the space, tweaked the menu, raised the prices —- and killed it. We went once, and the previously delicious food was too salty to eat. Our favorite server went to the kitchen to sample, and agreed with us. 😢 The other is a far happier story. Nelson’s has been in business since 1929. Currently there are 2nd - 4th generation members working there every day. It’s a breakfast and lunch diner; food and menu essentially the same for the 40 years I’ve eaten there. Yummy comfort food in a place that looks every inch a diner. Maybe we’ll have lunch there today! I can picture an I Love Lucy episode of yesterday’s quartet of painters. That would be a hoot! Thanks everyone for caring and sharing ~~ Edited August 24, 2022 by Live4cruises
summer slope Posted August 24, 2022 #44 Share Posted August 24, 2022 Just a question. Does anyone know why the change from FLL to Miami? And will HAL provide a bus to FLL so they can get their cars. Curious that's all. 16
StLouisCruisers Posted August 24, 2022 #45 Share Posted August 24, 2022 Big surprise to read that the Oosterdam is docking in Miami instead of FLL. I echo @summer slope's question - any idea why? 14
Rare TiogaCruiser Posted August 24, 2022 #46 Share Posted August 24, 2022 Good Morning All, Not much on today’s agenda here. Just a few errands and have to figure out dinner. Spent much of yesterday making desserts: passion fruit pie and basil gelato (which comes to life when strawberries are added on top). It was a big turn off when it smelled like pesto while I was making it. Thought I’d add our now family recipe for margaritas. It came from a very popular family owned Mexican restaurant that closed some 30 years ago. I had worked there while in college. Los Portales Margaritas: 8 oz. Tequila (I use Casadores Repozado) 8oz. De Kuper Triple Sec 1 can frozen lime juice 1can water (refill the lime juice can) Freeze for several hours or overnight. Run through blender briefly before serving. 1 hour ago, ottahand7 said: A tattered Fritillary butterfly in my garden yesterday. Our passion fruit vines have been having regular visits from gulf fruitiaries also. Per a lecture by our local Master Gardeners, they use passion fruit vines for reproduction. I'm guessing Fort Lauderdale decided they couldn't handle that many ships that day. Looks like Oosterdam drew the short straw since the next cruise is a one way trans canal cruise. I assume that sailing will be getting a notice as well. Roy Edited August 24, 2022 by rafinmd 17
aliaschief Posted August 24, 2022 #48 Share Posted August 24, 2022 Today we visited Christiansand, Norway. we did a ship tour and rode a 1896 steam locomotive through some pretty woods and river. We have seen many Nords using robotic lawn mowers to mow their yards. It appears they work quite well. The end of our grand adventure is getting near but tomorrow we will be visiting Stavenger. 31

The Volendam is in FLL that day beginning a 28 day Amazon cruise. At least it was booked that way. How many HAL ships can they book into FLL in one day? 13
