Vaping Email Response from Celebrity

Well, not feeling very heard and actually feeling dismissed with “there has been minimal to no impact to our guests”. Honestly, If I wanted to sit with vaping I could head to one of the many dirty windowed vape shops we have here in town. The full text here:

Dear Mrs. Hunt:

Thank you for taking the time to contact the Executive Offices at Celebrity Cruises.

This test is currently in place on the Celebrity Equinox and Celebrity Eclipse, and at this time there has been minimal to no impact to our guests experience onboard.  Vaping will only be allowed in certain areas of the casino for casino guests, during operating hours only. Cigarettes, pipes and cigars will still be prohibited in the casino.

Mrs. Hunt, we truly appreciate you taking the time to provide us with your feedback regarding our recent change.

Sincerely,

Executive Office

We also got this canned response to our e-mail sent yesterday. They have no idea if there has been an impact to their guests or not. Also, it appears from GeorgiaPeaches comments that there is no designated area in the casino for vaping.

Ummm, I see no indication of any special area set aside for vaping in the casino. And isn’t it a little soon and down right presumptuous of them regarding the impact on passengers?

Couldn’t agree more!

Exactly the response I got.

The reply I sent back...

Thank you for your response.
However, based on first hand reports from people on board - including pictures of the signs - there is nothing stating that those vaping in the casino must be gambling. In fact, the first hand report from the Equinox is that high top tables have been added to the edge of the casino and they have been filled with people vaping and not gambling.

I'm curious what is being done to ensure that the vapers are not using THC or worse in their devices. Even without that danger, there are second-hand from breathing and even third-hand from touching where the residue has landed effects. Allowing it is certainly not prioritizing the health of your cruisers.

I have 2 cruises booked with Celebrity.  If they are going to permit vaping I will not be entering the casino.  Why are they changing their policy and enabeling?  I switched to Celebrity becasue of their non smoking/vaping policy.  Guess they too have lost their minds.

Thank you all for trying to get Celebrity to do something about vaping.  Will be on Eclipse later this summer (first cruise since ‘19 first Celebrity cruise since ‘15) and worry about my son’s and my enjoyment of the cruise. Both of us suffer from chest pain when around folks vaping.

I wonder if the people on the Equinox and Eclipse realized when they booked this cruise that they would be part of this trial?

My Magic 8n Ball says, no. This is a recent BTW change. We book our cruises 18 to 24 months out. Our upcoming October Eclipse cruise was September 2022.

I LOVE that Celebrity casinos are smoke free--it puts them a step above other lines just for that fact.

That being said, vaping is not nearly as widespread as smoking.

Would I prefer NO vaping? YES

Do I truly think it will be an issue? NO

Time will tell.

As both you and your son suffer medical concerns when exposed to vaping, please email Celebrity to convey your previous experiences and voice your concerns at the following email address. Just because at the current moment of the trial, with limited vapes being used as word had not gotten out, and Celebrity has not heard of any negative impact, yet, please be proactive and perhaps if enough of us speak up, the pilot programs will end before we board.

My husband had a serious allergic reaction to second at vape emissions in an outdoor setting, so we are very concerned what might happen in an indoor setting.  We have emailed and waiting for a response.

No, and we are well past final payment and have had our air booked for several months.

Negative.  I’ve emailed about our 3 upcoming Eclipse cruises in The Retreat.

Thanks! I emailed them! We have three sea days so that will be a lot of time spent avoiding smoking areas on the ship. Hopefully fumes stay out of our cabins.  I have been on cruises where the smoking areas and the air return are oddly close to each other.

Only the bottom line affects policy, not my medical concerns, or yours. As I said in another thread: If the vape policy adds to the bottom line, it will remain. If it detracts from the bottom line it will be abandoned with tag "We listened to you".

Thank you for sharing Celebrity’s reply, which was indeed dismissive, as well as factually ridiculous. Celebrity certainly does not know, for example, whether guests were bothered by the vaping and left the casino and did not return during the cruise. And Celebrity also doesn’t seem to care about the second-hand impacts of vaping.

It seems Celebrity has made a decision to do this “test” on a couple of ships and has decided the outcome of the “test” in advance.

One of the reasons we enjoy Celebrity is its  no-indoor-smoking policy. That policy seems in jeopardy now. ☹️

Nope.  When we booked the Eclipse there was nothing about it.  Because it’s recent.  However no emails about it since decision was made.  I’d prefer no vaping or smoking ANYWHERE on board.

I have two cruises with Celebrity this year which I will sail on.  Next year, I'm canceling the two I have.  My husband and I have a Viking Sea planned and we will see how that goes.  I'm not saying I won't sail Celebrity again, but I'll let them decide who they are first.  So far the changes they've made haven't really affected me, but taking the time to research and plan only to have the criteria change without notice or recourse is just a bit too much of a risk for me.

I was on the Equinox last week and have posted several photos of the signs and shared my firsthand experience watching a guy blow a big cherry cloud my way as he sat at a table game. People seem to be casting doubt on actual signage and firsthand accounts. I witnessed numerous signs and a man vaping at a table game. I was at the video poker row nearby. As for the signs, I took them to mean vaping is allowed everywhere in the casino but maybe there is some distinction. We got off the ship on Sunday, July 2. These photos were taken shortly before 6 a.m. And there was no advance warning this would be rolled out. I was taken aback because one of the huge selling points for Celebrity has always been the clean air in the casino.

You have clearly not been in New York City. It is ubiquitous with people puffing away on the streets and  "sneaking" puffs on the subway, in the movie and Broadway theatres, pretty much everywhere (I even saw someone vaping in St. Patrick's Cathedral the other day when I wandered in as I'd never been there before!).
