I don't know about these rumors being true anytime soon. But given the decline in popularity of smoking, I would not be surprised to see more non-smoking ships or at least less smoking on ships in the future. As someone above said, currently only about 11% of people in the US smoke. Europe is higher, but still "only" at 28%. And it trends higher in economically disadvantaged areas (where people may not even be able to afford cruising). Younger populations also appear to have lower rates of smoking (at least cigarettes...)

 

There are still a lot of older generation folks, who picked up smoking in their youth, who are cruising frequently. As they age out, Princess (and other lines) would do well to shift in ways that feel inclusive and comfortable to a younger demographic. Being right on the border of GenX and Millenials myself, and at a point where we can afford several nice vacations a year with decades of traveling ahead of us, I can tell you that very, very few of my peers smoke, and the majority do not care to be around it. Most of the people I know who smoked in high school or their 20s have since quit and also prefer not to be around it. 

At some point, there won't be enough smokers around to even bother. Maybe put a spot high up on deck where people can go if they really need to, without bothering others. 

But the removal of Churchills has me thinking Princess is already seeing the writing on the walls, and slowly leaning away from accommodating smokers anyway.

We were on the Wonder OTS in April and one day I mistakenly started to walk into the starboard smoking area that was adjacent to one of the pools.  It wasn't on a top deck so the smoke just hung in the area, as soon as I got near the area, it enveloped me immediately and I had to do a 180 and get the hell out of there.

Churchills on the Coral Princess on an Australian based World Cruise is a wonderful spot.

Large comfy chairs, windows with a sea view over the promenade deck, next to Crooners for a drink order, and of course non-smoking.

Let me preface as I am an ex-smoker. Quit 12 years ago.

 

I used to gamble on land and now only on sea days on a cruise.

 

I like to go into the casino early in the morning and for a while in the afternoon on the ship. 

There is less fresh cigarette smoke then and its quieter. 

 

With that being said, it would be smart of them if they would make their casino's smoke free because it would help their machines (smoke oils), the furnishings from floor to ceiling hold that smell and considering there are more nonsmokers in the world now it would bring more into play. 

 

It's not like there are not there aren't any smoke areas on a ship because I see two or three marked on different decks. 

 

This is just my opinion and I know this is just a rumor, but I sure would like to see it happen.

Maybe, just maybe, Princess started this rumor to get an unbiased assessment of what passengers want (aka Sheldon Copper). 

 

It's not like there aren't other places to smoke.  My concerns are for other passengers in the casino and their own staff.  It's not healthy for them 24/7/365 (or however long is their contract).

I remember back when the Carnival Paradise was smoke free.  Turned out that the smokers also did not drink or gamble as much as expected and it was cancelled.  However, there are fewer smokers today than back then.

Princess, at one time:

 

1.  Had no smoking on formal nights PRE Pandemic.  It is still listed on their webpage but hasn't happened since POST Pandemic.

 

2.  Had no smoking in the casino....AT ALL...right after the Pandemic. 

 

In my opinion, Princess is tacking in the wrong direction.  Did had it...they did it...and then decided to drop no smoking ALL together.

Formal nights used to be non smoking in the casino. That seems to be gone

I could not believe it when they went back to smoking being allowed in the casino post pandemic. When it was no smoking at the start up, I thought it would stay that way.

I have to agree with you. I am a fairly hard core gambler and I have never smoked.  I try to pick places near other non-smokers if possible. Some people who smoke are courteous enough to try to keep their cigarettes away from me and at least blow smoke the opposite direction, and I appreciate that. The added problem though is people who look to the casino as a convenient place to smoke indoors.  As a look around I see a lot of folks who simply are smoking and not putting any money in machines and when done they walk out.

My Princess Cruise Consultant just called me regarding our upcoming Enchanted sailing.  I told her that I read on Cruise Critic that there was a rumour Princess was planning on initiating a non smoking policy.

 

She laughed.  She said that in a very recent meeting with Princess Corporate, they addressed the issue as they always do.  And, there is no plan to change the policy in the near future.  Their feeling is “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”.  She is very disappointed herself because the majority of her clients want the smoking policy changed.

 

So, the rumour is exactly just that.  Nothing new, nothing to see here folks.  I hope the OP reads this.

I guess the best we can hope for for our August Enchanted sailing is that the proposed changes to Take 5 occur and half of that space becomes an enclosed non-smoking casino.

Our sailing is August 24th on Enchanted, too.  Are we on the same cruise?  I hope you’re right about the changes on Take 5.  It would be wonderful!  However, that seems quite soon for them to get that done, but you never know, right.

Mine is the 10th-24th. When I spoke to the bartender at Take 5 on my May sailing, he said the changes should take place before I sail again. On the one hand, I think it is really sad to lose half of Take 5 to the Casino since it is such a great venue and I am worried about the noise from the slot machines diminishing the experience of the live bands. But, on the other hand, it will be nice to have a separate area for non-smokers since the Enchanted's casino is especially cramped and smokey.
