The Fleet Report and Daily for Monday July 8th, 2024

Recommended Posts

Happy Monday. Thanks for the Daily and Fleet reports.

Going up to 95 today. I am over summer. Perhaps i will have a cranberry mimosa as I absolutely love them. Black Bean Soup sounds yummy but not on a hot day like today.

Spending the day grading assignments and other work. 93 days to go until my cruise. I will sailing Canada/New England on a 10-day trip from Quebec on October 9th. I will be sailing on the NCL Sky which is a small ship. My sister and I will have an aft balcony for the first time. I will see how it compares to regular balcony cabins. Our goal this trip is to try local foods in every port we go to. Cannot wait!

Thinking of all on the care list.

Celebrating with all who are celebrating.

Have a safe and healthy day.

Thank you for today's FR&D.

It is currently sunny and 68°F here at 12.57pm.

I will pass on today's food and drink.

This morning I had a bacon bap for  breakfast at the beach after dropping Pauline off at work.

The sea was so calm.

Prayers 🙏 for all who are unwell.

I hope y'all have a happy day.

Good morning, everyone!

I woke up to thunder storms this morning. Of course.  The forecast said no rain until after dinner today, so I left the cushions out on the patio furniture.  Now, they are all soaking wet.  I pushed the chairs back  under the eaves when I was out with Rita and hopefully that will help them dry out and not get wetter.

Nothing on the agenda here today except the gym and the grocery store.    I would like today's meal, but not today.  It is too muggy out to be eating a hot soup.  I may save my favorite recipe for this winter.  I would have to thin it out a bit due to the carb load.   Vegan Black Bean Soup

Here is a recipe from Valerie Bertinelli.   Val's Spicy Black Bean Soup

This one is totally different.  Half the beans are cooked with tomatoes and the other half with vegetables.  Spicy Black Bean Soup

@marshhawk Annie, I hope all goes well with the MRI today.

Wishing you all a wonderful day!

A quick, early  good morning.  We are okay, just getting rain, but that should end in a couple of hours.  This is a band of thunderstorms that is not part of Beryl.  We'll get a few showers from Beryl's western edge early this afternoon, but with lower winds than predicted.

As with most hurricanes, Beryl changed course and made landfall well east of Corpus Christi and will miss Joy @Seasick Sailor, Lambie @LambKnuckles and Elizabeth @Haljo1935 except for some rain this afternoon.  It looks liike Elizabeth is getting rain from the same band of storms we are.

Beryl's path through Texas includes the Houston area, The Woodlands where we used to live, and Conroe where DH's younger brother lives.  She will continue northeast and basically follow I-30 out of Texas and through Arkansas.

Lenda

Yes, we are getting some rain that should end by 11am.

The Houston are certainly doesn't need all that rain - they'll flood, for sure.

Beryl is now expected to track north of Memphis.

Math 2.0 Day is observed on July 8 of every year. Math 2.0 Day celebrates the subject of math, without which life would be much more difficult. With or without knowing we use math numerous times every single day.

Good morning Dailyites

Whew, looks like it will just be a windy afternoon. Thankful Beryl is moving on. Stay safe!

My sister and friend went to Santa Barbara for 2 days for golf. Well, if you are watching news, there's fire and smoke up there. I don't know what they plan to do. With my sister's auto immune issue she shouldn't stick around.

Yesterday, we hosted my girlfriend's GD at the Florence Vineyard for brunch. There were 7 of us, and we all enjoyed our meals. She turns 6 on Wednesday.

Today, Allen has a lab for next week's nephrology appt. Then downtown for lunch. I have several options to make for dinner. We will see how full we are from lunch.

Thank you so much Rich, Debbie, Ann, Vanessa, and Dixie for your dedication to the Daily. And to Sandi and Lenda for the pictures from ports of the day. My goodness, is there any place you two haven't been?!!

Annie, I'm saddened by your situation growing up. It's tough to crawl out from under that horrible upbringing. I'll tell my story someday, but not today.

Prayers for each of our friends and family here on the Daily.

Tana: EAT!!

Love and blessings for a healthy,  happy, safe week. God bless!!

Good morning again from a wet and heavily overcast central Texas.  It is 75F and feels like 75F with 9 mph wind from the NNE, but from looking at the neighbor's flag it is not a steady wind or a 9mph wind.  The rain should be ending soon, but we're supposed to get more rain about 3pm.  The rain has cooled our temperatures, and our predicted high will be 84F.

I had enough problems with math 1.0 and will pass on math 2.0.  It's been a very long times since I had a freezer pop.  I still play games on my computer and tablet, but it's been quite a while since we had a video game.  We had the original Pong for years.

The quote is true no matter who said it.

The meal sounds good, and I like black been soup, which I get on BHBs.  I would prefer a traditional mimosa, and would like to try the wine.

We have visited Hong Kong at least three times,.

Vasco da Gama helped open the world to Europe with his explorations beginning in 1497.

@dobiemom  Marsha, please be careful in that excessive, and unprecedented heat.

@Heartgrove  Jack, I hope your DSIL has a good visit with the surgeon.

@0106  Tina, thanks for the information on today's quote.

@Haljo1935  Elizabeth, I'm glad we're both getting some much needed rain.  It looks like that is it for rain for the next two weeks.  Houston certainly doesn't need all that rain, especially since it floods with even a moderate rain.

@marshhawk  Annie, I hope the CT scan does not reveal any surprises.

Thank you Rich, Vanessa, Debbie, Ann and Dixie and Graham for the FR&D.  I’ll celebrate Math 2.0 day but pass on the other two..    Special prayers for Jacaui, Terri, Katherine’s friend, Sandi’s brother, Scottie,  Chuck, Bonnie and Tana,

Interesting quote today regardless of the origin..

Hong Kong was my disembarkation twice, both 2 times on BHB’s.  In 2012 I stayed a night or 2 after disembarking Zaandam.

Da Gamma was quite the navigator..

I’ll pass on the meal.  My alternative is Indonesian Risjsttafel Lunch as served on MS Prinsendam June 4, 2015.

risjsttafel1.jpg

..
It will be hot and humid today.  I have completed my walk and will have the usual errrands (UPS, perhaps grocery, and fire house this afternoon.  It will be a busy day at the fire house as I have an orientation with the new treasurer (I have been Treasurer Emeritus but de facto treasurer for several years and the new treasurer is learning but just been granted access to all the data he needs), then board meeting, and finally the annual meeting and elections.  I will probably not be on cruise critic after I heave for the fire house.

That was the end of our stay in Hong Kong.  I'm glad I got to go there because I don't think we would be able to go back there anymore.  Sadly that's the case in many of our former ports of call.

Interesting collection of photos Sandi.

We have been to Hong Kong three times, and enjoyed each visit where we tried to see something different each time.  There are so many pictures, I'm going to break them into three posts, one for each visit.

In 2000 while we were on the P&O Oriana world cruise, we were in Hong Kong on February 28.  It was a cool and cloudy day, but we still enjoyed the day.  We docked in Kowloon near the Star Ferry Terminal.  That day, we took the ferry across to Hong Kong and a city bus to Victoria Peak, with the intention of taking the tram back down, but it was closed for repairs.  In 2000, DH had the digital camera, and these are a few of his pictures.

The view from the ship as we sailed to our dock.

Once across the harbor, we walked around for a while before boarding a bus to Victoria Peak.  Not knowing which coins were which, I just held out a handful of coins and the driver picked out the ones for the fare.  @StLouisCruisers  Sandi, the scaffolding in your picture is made of bamboo which is common in Hong Kong.  It is stronger than it looks.

Good Monday Morning Dailytites!  Off to the CT scan this morning, cant connect to our local TV channel, but have 5 on local fox.  It seems that Dekalb county was the one county that  was hit by that storm last night, and people are still without power.  We have power, but i worry about the street lights north of us not having power.  We shall see.  Cats are fed, I'm about to run into the shower, and I leave in 30 minutes.

DH said he would come with me today, but once again, he is sound asleep.  I made coffee, but not sure if I can have any, so he can have coffee.  Have a great day!

Good luck with your CT scan today Annie.

Our next visit to Hong Kong was October 18-19. 2002 on the Volendam 64-day APEC cruise. That time, we were there for two days, and the first day we took the bus to Aberdeen to see the floating restaurant and the area.  Later we walked down Nathan Street and that night we visited the Temple Street night market.

The view from the upper deck of the bus on the way to Aberdeen.  The weather that day was not the best.

The next morning, we decided to take a train out to the New Frontier and the border station.  The ship had our passports, and we almost got in trouble because of the checkpoint to get out of the station.  Evidently, we were not the first in this situation, as the guards pointed us in the right direction to reboard the train back to Kowloon.

Our last visit in 2018 was on the Coral Princess Circle the North Pacific 60-day cruise.  We were in Hong Kong on October 23 that year.  We missed the chance to have the ship get us a visa to visit Macaw, so we visited the other play land in Hong Kong, Disneyland.

Between our 2002 visit and our 2018 visit, the new cruise terminal at the old air port was opened, and we docked there.  It is not as convenient a location as the old dock, and we had to take a shuttle to a shopping mall and back.

We were greeted by another version of the dragon dance upon arrival.

Unfortunately, clearing immigration in Japan and China was a very long an involved process which took up much of the morning.   To prevent people from crowding the terminals, we were issued "tender" tickets.

We enjoyed our day at Disneyland and riding all the rides, well all but one.  The Star Wars ride was Space Mountain on steroids, and not the type of ride I like.  I made it through the ride without screaming, but I had my eyes closed from the beginning of the first drop until the end and was leaning on DH.  After we got off the ride, we needed to find a bench to sit until our legs stopped shaking.

I believe the quote means that we all have choices and that all our choices have consequences.  BTW, the attribution of this quote to Wilde is probably a mistake.  In 1927 Unitarian minister Charles Francis Potter said, “What you read when you don’t have to, determines what you will be when you can’t help it,” he was speaking about the importance of libraries. He felt libraries must be for the people and they must be accessible; he believed as much should be spent for the libraries as is for the streets.

If you type the quote into your favorite search engine most of the references attribute it to Wilde. I did find one reference ( https://quoteinvestigator.com/2019/04/02/read/ ) that is a good discussion about the quote and that it should be attributed to Potter

CT scan went well, I survived, the personality of the person who ran the test needed to at least like a happy person. I was the second person in, and he already had ....attitude.  Wonder what happened with the first person.

Last spring before we went to cruise Alaska, I was having a lot of chest pain, so my heart doc ordered a series of x rays and said they saw something on my lungs, so he sent me to Dr Wu, who did an MRI and CT and they found out that I had a mass of nodules.  Not sure what the nodules were and he said I might need lung surgery instead of a cruise to Alaska.  I explained to him, that the trip to Alaska was necessary, and no one lives forever.  He gave me another month, put me on Trelogy took another test, and the nodules had broken up.  No mass. Of course, then I cruised, got bronchitis, got Covid, went to Europe, got RSV, and because of the mass, they need to CT me every year...wonder what damage was done in the past year. I should be able to see the results on my portal, but I explained that portals are only good on cruise ships. I dont play doctor and Dr Wu can explain it to me when I see him in August.

Math 1.0 1966 1 + .03= 2 packs Twinkies

Math 2.0 2024 1 + 3 + .27 =1 pack Twinkies.

I was never good in math, and no one can understand why I have a minor in physics.  Apparently I think outside mathematics.

For those who commented regarding last night's post.  My dad came across my mother's diary after she passed away, he called me and asked if I could fly to Boston for her funeral.  I told him that I thought they were going to wait until he had passed and have their ashes "blended " together, he said no. He had her Fedexed to Vermont once he read her diary.  He apologized for all the years of abuse, and yes, while there was damage done, I was his caretaker the last two years of his life. I was there when he passed away.  There were tears, and a huge, "
Thank God" moment, but driving back from Florida after he passed, i felt that I was visited by an angel who wrapped their wings around me, and said, "You survived this, and you are going to be OK."  It was a very unreal moment, but one that I will remember until my end.  And you know, I am OK.  I still get angry, but I know that for every action, there is a reaction, and it really all went back to "mom" and her own insanity.  I forgave my Dad.  I didnt forgive "mom" until I looked at the history of insanity in her own family.  My aunt helped me a lot.

If I hadnt spent so many years running away from my reality, I never would have all my stories to share.

God bless!!

They were ready for Halloween, which we discovered in 2002 was a big deal in Hong Kong.

Good morning, thanks for the Fleet Report and Daily!  Neither DH nor I were good at math, and that was passed along to our DS; we ended up getting him a math tutor for grades 11 and 12, otherwise he wouldn't have made it.  Fortunately the poor math gene hasn't been passed along to his two sons, as they're both very good at it.  We had popsicles, not freeze pops.  The only video game I play is Bejeweled on FB.

We have a We visited Hong Kong on the Maasdam in 2019 and enjoyed our overnight stay. Sail away was wonderful with the laser light show accompanied by music.  Very memorable.

There's a bright orange ball in the sky, one that should be yellow - yes, we've got smoke in the air again.  It's a comfortable 15 degrees right now (59), and we're expecting it to warm up to around 28 (82), so we'll get out and do what we need to early in the day.  I'm glad Beryl was downgraded to a Cat 1, but see she can still be devastating especially in low lying areas.

My heart hurts for those of you with painful childhood memories; it should be a time of carefree joy, not fear and pain.  I've always felt I've led a charmed life being adopted into the family I was, especially after finding my birth siblings who ended up in families that left them with symptoms of PTSD.

@marshhawksending prayers that the CT scan only reveals good news.

@Heartgroveprayers for your DSIL and her medical team today.

Today will be a normal Monday, going to the Field House for the cardiac rehab program, then taking care of things around the house and yard.  Yesterday I sanded and wood-filled the bannister leading down the stairs from the deck, so today I'll be sanding and painting it so it looks nice again.

I'd like the drink of the day (wrote down the recipe), would like the wine, and will give a pass on the menu suggestion.  Oh, I have to tell you, yesterday's menu offering was delicious!  I used the first recipe for peanut sauce, putting it into the microwave for 20 seconds to soften the PB, and it turned out beautifully.  We enjoyed our shrimp salads on the deck, listening to the robins and chickadees around the yard.  Tonight we'll be having air fryer chicken strips and crudites - depending on how hot it is on the deck, we may be enjoying them in the pergola on the back lawn instead.  And wine.

Prayers for everyone who is in need, in pain, in grief, in wars not of their making, and in the paths of devastating storms and fires.  Cheers to all who have something to celebrate today.

Smooth Sailing!  ☺️☺️☺️

Gerry

Thanks for our Monday Daily Rich and thanks to our F & B contributors.

Interesting collection of days.  I used to love freezer pops when I was a kid oh so many years ago.  I do like the quote no matter who made it.  Thanks Tina @0106 for the input on it.

I’ll pass on the meal and the wine (red) but the drink sounds interesting.  I have a suspicion we will be trying some of them next year on our TA with the way some of the roll call is talking 😉

Late to the party today - early morning appointment so I was up bright and early this morning to take care of Ivan’s schedule.  Well, that was one big FAIL.  My lawn company showed up to put pesticide on the lawn while I was upstairs so Ivan only got one thing done outside and was going to have to wait until the heat dried up the grass.  What a GOOD dog.  He held it patiently and just went out to do his business.  It seems dry but I wiped his paws to be on the safe side.  normally I would just walk the dogs but my legs wouldn’t tolerate that for sure.

So grateful and relieved to hear that Daily-ites reporting so far have been spared the worst of Beryl.  I pray it stays that way and for everyone in beryl’s path.

I cut the biggest cheque I have written in a very long time and off it went in the mail to my new home.  It’s so rare to write cheques these days - I’m just glad I still had some and remembered how.  LOL. 😂

Prayers for those on the Care list and those that need them.  Cheers to those celebrating and cruising

Lots going on tiday, BUT one thing not happening is DH has no eye drops to do tiday!  None!  First time in maybe 15 years?  Might start again next month but celebrating seeing today without meds!  Just had to share that blessing with you all.

Stay safe! Catch up later, Maureen
