Remember you are a guest at each port of call.  I try to make a point of mentioning to a local that we encounter how much something about their country/island really appeals to me. Even something as simple as "what gorgeous weather you have here" or "your dog is adorable" always brings a smile. (Fortunately, since I am now considered elderly, nobody mistakes my compliments for a 'pick-up' line).

I couldn't agree with you more. On land, every day. We've been going to a great biscuit place most Saturdays by our farmers market for several years. The biscuits and staff are just wonderful. Saturday I got to go into the kitchen and thank the owner who was making biscuit dough at the time. It went way beyond thanks. We talked about all manner of cooking. It makes a difference.

In the same vein, remember that the wonderful staff truly appreciates when you comment on them that they helped make your cruise special. Promotions can be based on them receiving those type of comments.

Absolutely. I compliment the worker bees and then pass on to the queen. People are "quick to criticize and slow to praise" is something I rejected ages ago.

i always felt that if I am willing to criticize (which I do not really remember having felt about any crew), I should also be willing to share my praise.

An example---in 2018 on the HAL Noordam, there was a server in the buffet who always kept my glass of lemonade full. I waved her over and said how much i appreciated it and wanted to write her up as someone who made my cruise special. I told her that I needed her name to do that, but I felt it would be impolite to stare at her chest to read her nameplate. She told me her name and how to spell it. Even after I told her I had submitted the report, she would come over and cover her nameplate and ask me to spell her name.

That was 6 years ago this month, and I still remember her name, Honeyeyeo.

Where's that smile emoji? I love that.

Excellent points, all of the above.

On a slightly different angle, may I add: Don't flush "things" in your cabin toilet. (I'm amazed at how many people apparently do, with dire results.)

And for all the first-timers who are, daily, being told they have to buy the "Amazon cruise essentials" of approximately 50 items....no, you don't. They will not enhance your cruise, and they will clutter up your cabin and deplete your bank account.

What on earth are the Amazon cruise essentials?

Stuff that other people think you need in order to have a cruise that isn't ruined 🙄
Google it, and you'll get 50 different responses from 50 different You Tube cruise "specialists"

Granted, some of the items are good ideas, especially if you haven't done much travelling - sea or land.
I've bought a few of them for my upcoming cruise - but they'll be just as useful on my next trip to Disney World, or a weekend in the mountains.

Many may be useful in certain circumstances, but not essential, by any means. But most (to me) seem to be in the same category as picking up junk food while grocery shopping.  Nice thought - but not enough thought went into it. You may want the 'pretty shiny' now, but you'll wonder later why you ever got that thing.

I thought the only essentials were your passport, and cruise documents.

I agree!

And then, I think it's really nice to have some $, credit card, change of clothes, my toothbrush.

I can't bring myself to actually look at the links to "cruise essentials", because I groan just reading the posts about them.....but apparently it starts with lanyards and luggage tag holders ("required by your cruiseline"), moves on to many electronics, dozens of storage items for your cabin (hangers for the closet, pockets for 100 items, pop-up storage containers, multiple bathroom accessories), fans, balcony furniture, door decorations, rubber ducks, and down to taking your own bedding, pillows, towels, beach towels, shower curtain.

The context is frequently "I just got back from my first cruise, and I was so glad my friend recommended these Amazon items! I don't know what I would have done without them!", followed by a link to "the list I've made based on her advice", directly to the products on the Amazon website.  What do you want to bet she is getting a nice commission from Amazon every time someone buys from her list?  And the enthusiasm and grateful thanks from pre-first timers, who had no idea they would need anything other than clothes and documents......

And yes, there are some who come back and say "It's all going back".

Not strictly cruise related, but don’t eat the yellow snow. Mostly relevant for Alaska cruises I guess. Though if you come across yellow snow in the Caribbean you absolutely should avoid it.

Best advice I have gotten was all cabins are on the same cruise - buy the cabin you truly want and don’t worry about the type of cabin others chose to buy.

AGREE!  I economize on other things and book a high deck aft-facing balcony whenever I can get it.  Scenic, quiet, with a bonus of lots of long walks to get anywhere.  Very occasionally there are other pax out on their balconies talking at the top of their lungs, but that's a drawback of any balcony cabin.  I cruise to 'see stuff' and relax, so my cabin is the #1 priority.

I agree with being nice and polite. I’ve had what some would consider disastrous cruise- honeymoon in 1984 in October (we were 23) during a hurricane.

30th anniversary cruise thru the Panama Canal where I was ill every single day.

I enjoyed both and every one in between.

I especially won’t let technology frustrate me because it can be a disappointment on land as well as sea.

My father always wanted me to carry cash and never run out of gas. I still do both because it makes me comfortable. We were able to use cash on our 2019 Baltic cruise. Although while looking through my travel stuff recently I found about $150 dollars worth of Euros. Yay!  I cashed them in.

Whereas we cruise mostly for the ports and really don't spend much awake time in our cabin.

We just hold onto euros for future travel, knowing we'll be back.

Mostly the same with us, though sometimes we relax and read in our cabin.

It will be a while for us. The kitten in my photo is now 19. Two Scotties are ill.
