The Fleet Report and Daily for Tuesday October 1st, 2024

Recommended Posts

We have been to Cadiz four times.  Twice we went into Seville, once by train and once by transfer.  The other two times we stayed in Cadiz and wandered around.

These are some of our pictures from 2017 on the Prinsendam as she was headed to Ft. Lauderdale.

We started our day walking through Cadiz on the way to Parque Genoves and Castillo de Santa Catalina.  On the way, we passed the Gran Theatro Falla.  We also passed many of the places already pictured.

Our next stop was the Castillo de Santa Catalina which is an interesting old fort.  The first picture is the promenade approaching the fort.

From the fort, we took a city bus along the coast into the new area of Cadiz.

On the way back, we passed through the gates to the old city of Cadiz.

Rabbit, Rabbit, White Rabbit!

Today's agenda starts off with the final (I hope) follow-up visit with the hip surgeon, then lots of errands to get ready for the trip. I need to get euros, so off to AAA I go. They seem to have the best rates.

Wishing everyone a safe, healthy, and happy October!

I found some pictures from Seville when we were there in 2009 on the Tahitian Princess.  That day, we took the transfer into Seville and did the Ho-Ho with time to walk around before catching the bus back to the ship.

These pictures are random pictures of Seville that are not of the main tourist attractions.  Unfortunately, I don't remember the names of many of them.   I always enjoy the different architecture of the city.  The Cathedral

We were not the only ship in port that day.  So even though we were not on a BHB, I can include a BHB in the pictures, Rotterdam VI.

Good cloudy morning. Possible showers this afternoon.
It’s been a stressful day here in parts of Berks County. Yesterday Schuylkill Valley high school was put on lockdown due to a 911 call of a student with a gun. A 16 year old was found with a Glock replica BB gun in his waistband.   Today the entire district has been shut down due to another threat posted on social media. 🙏 are needed that this will end.

Blessings and prayers to all on our journey.

My County’s Sheriff actually arrests & charges any minor who even makes written threats. And he posts the videos of these arrests online in hopes of deterring the huge increase in these threats. Even a 10 year old who made written threats on Xbox was arrested.

I am not sure it will help, but at least it is better than “thoughts & prayers”, or “it’s a fact of life”.

And he is also going to add weapon sniffing dogs to all schools in the County. I find it hard to believe that we as a Country can’t do better.

Rabbit, rabbit, white rabbit.

Good morning, thanks for the Fleet Report and Daily!  Fire pups are sweet - I remember as a child having a book called Sparky The Fire Dog.  So much of our world is beautiful, and yes to coffee - decaf for me, please; I like the taste, but don't need the buzz.  We've been to Cadiz a couple of times and enjoyed our visits there - just wandering around looking at the sites, then sitting in the square in front of the large cathedral (which we eventually toured), enjoying lunch and people watching.

Well we had out first frost advisory issued late yesterday afternoon so DH and I went around the yard covering the big pots of begonias and brought in the large curly figs  and Boston ferns that will over winter in our basement.  When I got up it was +3(37) so it didn't quite get to freezing, but better safe than sorry.  Yesterday I went into the back yard and cut down all the greenery from the daylilies - and discovered a treasure trove of pine cones that the squirrel was hiding.  Bet he doesn't even remember where they are!   I raked them all up and tossed them under the spruce tree if he still wants them.

@cunnorlplease wish your DH a very Happy Birthday as he celebrates another trip around the sun!

@Mr. BostonI hope you hear better news about your Mom's DB.

@Sir PMPsafe travels and Bon Voyage!

This morning I'm off for my monthly breakfast with retired colleagues.  It's always fun getting together - today one of them is joining us after spending the summer in Germany with good friends; can't wait to hear the stories that will come from that visit!  I have a feeling our friend Ollie will be dropping in for a visit this afternoon (her DB and DSIL have gone back to Ontario), so I think I'll put a frozen pie in the oven for us to snack on later.

I'm going to pass on the drink - not a fan of sour stuff - but would like to try the wine.  I've never had chicken stew, and neither of us enjoys kale, but if someone made it for me, I'd try it.  It's supposed to go up to 15(59) so I've got some hamburger patties thawing for DH to toss on the barbecue later in the afternoon that we can enjoy along with coleslaw on the deck for dinner.  And wine.

Prayers for everyone who was impacted by Helene; the devastation shown on television is absolutely heartbreaking.  Cheers to all who have celebrations today.

Smooth Sailing!  ☺️☺️☺️

🐇🐇white🐇. Looking forward to a good month!
Cloudy and 60s in north Jersey.

Sleep was short again, maybe tonight will be better.

Our fire dept didn’t allow dogs in the fire trucks when going on calls. But we often had dogs at the monthly meetings or trainings, occasionally on search and rescues if they were brought in private vehicles. The formal K-9 units with trained search and rescue dogs were always very welcome.  A few of our trucks carried cute little stuffed dogs that sat on the dashboard!

Many extra blessings to all in the ravaged zones, residents and responders.  Hoping we hear soon that the NC Canton area and nephew’s road gets opened and they can get supplies. And power. But Asheville, down the mountain from them, will get the focused attention. A brutal mess!

Blessings for all in need of healing, strength, patience, direction, hope and comfort.

Cheers for our cruisers, the honeymooners and all celebrating 🎉.  Happy 70th birthday Scott 🎂

Gray Squirrel, Red Squirrel, Brown Squirrel.  I have found that life is much easier if you are a bit nutty once and awhile.  Well, unless there are squirrels around, then it can be a little dicey from time to time.  Hope you all have a wonderful October.

Good morning. We had a firehouse nearby that had a Dalmatian and would visit the dog on our way home from school. At the time we had two feisty airedales that would also want to visit the Dalmatian. The fire fighters knew everyone nearby and sent one of the airedales back to us on the fire truck. It was probably 1960 or so .
I make a chicken sausage dish and usually swap out the kale for spinach. I find, as Debbie said, that the kale is less pungent in a stew or soup. Today I am making a soup of cauliflower and potatoes in the crack  pot. I made it last week with beans and it disappeared in a flash. Tana really enjoyed it so I am hoping for the best.

@Mr. Boston, I was sorry to read about your uncle and the medical complications. Sending prayers your way.

@StLouisCruisers, Sandi, I wanted to congratulate you for completing the stitching for the Christmas Stocking. It took me almost five years to complete a needlepoint picture of Peggy’s Cove!
Take care everyone.

I asked a friend who worked for a firefighters' association why Dalmatians are associated with fire departments. She said it came from the coaching days in England, where they helped to keep horses calm, and continued in the fire service even though it has been a long time since fire brigades used horses.

I think it is wonderful that international coffee day is different from national coffee day, unless it refers to the packaged "International Coffees," which are disgusting.

A chicken sausage and greens stew would be good, but kale is the only green that I really, really dislike. No, no, no on the cocktail or anything else containing Midori. Even the thought of melon liqueur makes me queasy.

Today's wine is from Portugal. While Petit Verdot is one of the varieties authorized for Bordeaux blends, most Bordeaux growers no longer cultivate it, because in an average year it never ripens. It needs a longer and sunnier growing season, so as a varietal it's likely to come from California, Spain, Portugal, Israel, or -- brace yourself -- Virginia, where it's the signature grape of several wineries. It would certainly never ripen in the Finger Lakes (although in ten or twenty years, the way things are going, it might), so I'll substitute a Lemberger/Blaufränkisch, which has a somewhat similar quality. Let's try one from Fulkerson's, $19.

Cadiz was one of the ports skipped by the Oosterdam last year.

I drove to Washington, D.C., in 1977 for Jimmy Carter's inauguration. The weather, both during the drive and on January 20, was awful. I didn't see the ceremony or the parade: we thought it would be a good time to get into the Tutankhamun exhibit without a long wait.

For class this week I wrote only 1700 words, down from last week. The assigned length was 750.

Good Tuesday Morning Dailyites!  I woke this morning and immediately said, "Rabbit, rabbit, white rabbit" and the kittens said, "Mom, we're kittens and it's black, black, black and white kitten.."  They are so smart....not. But they are part of what makes my world BeautyFull.

I'm on my second cup of coffee right now, which will keep me going until I go to work, and then whatever is left over, gets poured over ice, and i drink iced coffee.  I got up this morning thinking I had to walk the dog, and forgot it was Tuesday, when I take the dog out at night.

Yesterday morning, after trying to email Firefly, and then calling Firefly, (cant believe their answering machine is still working) I called the CC company and asked for the charge to be refunded,  hopefully this happened sometime yesterday.  Our traveling friend Charles said he got the refund from his reservation and he understood from the message that they will not re open.

I then cancelled my reservations for our one night stay in Gainesville, and booked a reservation for Corinth MS.  So at least I felt that I had actually done something yesterday.

My boss got ticked at me for asking a question in the group chat, and didn't even respond when I logged out last night.  I haven't had a sale in 3 weeks with them, and I'm losing my credibility.  Something needs to change and soon.  When you sell you keep job, when you aren't selling, you are the first to go.  Even though he promised to keep me on.  I have never had a boss that gets mad when one asks a question.  It means you want to learn.  But since he never knows anything, I guess it makes him feel bad.  Not that he would ask anyone to get an answer, that would be a sign that he doesn't know his job.  My basic problem right now, is that I work mornings, and they keep giving me the same people to call, so if I call on Monday morning, and the person doesnt answer, why would they answer on Tuesday morning.  They are at work, their cell phone is turned off.  errrrr......

We went out to Captain D's for dinner, and I think I found out the reason that so many are closing.  The fish is good and hot, the fries are cold.  The girl at the counter, didn't know if vinegar was on the tables, there was no Dr. Pepper, just water came out, and after she left and went home, the new girl came over and told us that our payment didn't go through.  I informed her that I had given the girl cash, so it did go through.

Right now on the tv they are talking about the air quality in the area due to the Biolab explosion.  They are saying that the level of chlorine in the air will not bother healthy people, that is is below the danger area. But that the weather will change.  And the wind will blow in another way.  I smelled it yesterday morning. And by afternoon could not stop coughing.  I did not smell it this morning, but if the wind shifts?  We will get it tonight.  Also the containers that they were going to move, disintegrated, and they will have to move the chemicals in a different  way.  I wonder how much of what I am thinking are clouds, is the plume?

Have a wonderful day, and I would try the stew, but not make it.  If kale ever finds its way into the house, both DH and I would leave....

Terry, thanks!  I can believe it taking so long to finish a project like that.  Sometimes you get discouraged or just tired of it.  I have a stocking I almost finished but got disgusted by how hard the backstitching was.  Many slightly diagonal lines and not straight up & down or side to side.  I'm going to pick it up and finish it soon.  As soon as Chris's is done, and I also need to get busy on a photo book for the 70 day cruise this past summer.  I've never waited this long to get that started!  I'm feeling overwhelmed!

Annie @marshhawk I think you are like me, overwhelmed.  Sorry to hear about the Biolab air contamination near you.  That's not good to hear about you coughing!  Also the problems getting your refund and having to go back to your credit card.  And obviously the boss didn't want to look bad since he couldn't or wouldn't answer your question.  I could never do your job, and I admire you for keeping at it even after no one answers the phone every day.  I hope you get some sales soon!  The Captain D's dinner out sounds discouraging.  I'm glad you liked the fish, but the rest of it...tsk, tsk!  My Dad used to like Captain D's and when I would drive Mom and Dad to their doctor appointments he would want to stop to eat lunch afterwards.  That was one of his favorites.  But you can't get good help these days (except at Chick-fil-A).  You take care!  Still chuckling about the kale!!!

Maureen.... I did see on the news that they somehow rigged up a country-western station with a generator to a cell tower so they have some local communication to locals. Hope it holds. Also in that area, not sure where, they are usually mule trains to haul equipment. I agree, a terrible mess. We have not heard anything more from my step-sister and her husband.

I am so glad to read that @Nickelpennyis alright, and wish her luck on resolving the family emergency.

@smitty34877After watching DH struggling to chew food and swallow without coughing, I think I need your soup recipes.  I understand that Tana might be the best critic for someone who doesnt want to or has no appetite to eat.  Please ask her what her favorites are for me.

@Sir PMPI truly appreciate what you post every day, I hope you have a wonderful trip and cruise.

@grapau27 It looks like a wild storm at sea from your dashboard.  I hope you dont get that hurricane  that is heading north, but it looks like it has affected your ocean view.

Has anyone noticed a plethora of cars with the bumper sticker that reads "Please Be patient. New driver"?  First thing that comes to mind, is who gives a new driver, a brand new car.  And they all drive like idiots, no directional signals, weaving in and out of traffic, or driving under turtle power.  DH and I think this bumper sticker really means,,,," Caution, stupid and rude driver, and I dont care".  Just something I have been noticing.

Susan and Maureen @RMLincoln my DDIL's brother and family (3 or 4 kids!) are still without power and water in Asheville and last I heard were going to try to get to Charlotte and find a place to stay.  This must be very upsetting for them.  I hope all our friends and family get some help and hopefully can start over.

@StLouisCruisers a slight burning at the back of my throat.  But that has been going on for a week, I also have had lots of sneezing, and of course the hacking cough that comes late in the afternoon.  Today I am working for 3 hours, take a couple of hours off, and then go back for two more hours.  Seeing if the voice lasts longer.  Its autumn, and the molds are out.  Its my favorite season, but it has its weather moments.

We have been a number of times to Cadiz and when we were on the Prinsendam in 2019 it was a very special day Jacqui  @kazu  had set up a fantastic Flamenco show in the afternoon . After the show was over we heard the trumpets , flutes and drums of the procession  of Semana Santa for Palm Sunday in the distance and went over there to see the procession .

Glad to show you some pictures of that day  without too many comments :

I so love the Socrates quote!
Bon voyage @Sir PMP I too always appreciate your posts! Have a wonderful trip!
We enjoyed Seville in the predigital times.

Our fire department gave out little stuffed pups called sparkie.   Our DGD received one years ago.   My DFIL was a fire Division chief.
