Did they give you any specific reason why they are moving so slowly?

 

Is it a mechanical issue or are they just trying to delay the arrival to coordinate with the port staffing?

 

I think it's all three. This morning I noticed the port side azipod wasn't exactly blasting (whereas the starboard one was), and an officer said they might have done some damage to the stabilizers. So even if the weather was nice and the port was wide open, they probably wouldn't be flooring it.

I know almost nothing about ship engineering so excuse me if this is a stupid question , but aren't stabilizers important in a ship of this size?

 

Would that be the kind of thing that can be repaired in 48 hours?

 

The soonest that they will prob know anything is mid day Thursday I am guessing. Just wish we had more concrete / reliable info - then we could make alternate plans - but can't really do anything unless there is a definitive cancellation by RC as I don't want to lose all the money we spent for the trip

 

There is really nothing we can do but wait which is frustrating -

 

First world problems I know :)

We were on a cruise on Allure in December 2013 where the stabilizers were out. Couldn't even really tell. I wouldn't say they're tremendously important. I'm not sure if they'll cancel the following cruise because of it or not though.

Latest Update from the Captain:

 

Picking up the pilot at 6pm tomorrow, docking at 9pm in Bayonne, and we can either do express disembarkation up till midnight tomorrow, or stay onboard until Thursday morning when it will be regular disembarkation. They'll also have free shuttles to EWR.

 

The girl at guest services (activities staff who is manning the outside as they're not letting anyone get into guest services...) said that the cruise line will pay any airline change fees, but not for an actual new ticket. So my new ticket I purchased for tomorrow at noon will be out of my own pocket (or my insurance) but if there's a fee to move that to Thursday, RCI will pick up the tab.

 

Apparently there will be a show on channel 22 on the ship starting at 10pm with more information.

 

So sorry that your vacation and all the others on the ship with you was impacted so negatively, I know you were so looking forward to being on the ship. I would not have wanted to experience what you all went through!

 

Hoping things go much better for you from this point on.

There is some snow predicted for the area overnight. I think that the ship took a beating. There is no doubt obvious damage. If there was excessive operational damage, I don't believe they would be sailing unescorted. I also don't think they would broadcast the full extent of any damage. They do not want to add any more stress, to 6000 people that just went thru the cruise ride of the century. It looks like they will probably have a line of dumpsters at port for all the broken glass, furniture etc. One thing for sure. If there are stabilizers on a ship, they are necessary. If they are used, hold on, there is good reason. If something like that is in fact damaged, it may not be a quick fix. Glad everyone is for the most part okay. That was one hell of a storm. Whomever it was that held that ship together against those conditions should be applauded. As well as the rest of the crew. Nobody signs on for that kind of duty.

We've been in 30 foot seas with 80+mph winds and there was some cosmetic damage but nothing else. Stabilizers aren't damaged by water motion. Stabilizers can be damaged by running into something but they are meant to be out in the sea. Also, just because you see high waves and roiling on the surface doesn't mean anything a few feet down. My guess is they're taking their time getting back due to a combination of issues, port workers, supplies, customs agents, and weather north of them. Stabilizers don't make all sea conditions feel smooth.

 

The ship is more than capable of handling those seas.

A ship can sail without stabilizers. They will not dry dock a ship if a stabilizer is out of order. I was onboard the Explorer of the Seas and during the bridge tour I noticed a note on the captain's consul that states that one of the stabilizers were out of order.

 

People think that the stabilizers are out at all times. However, this belief isn't true. Actually the stablizers are out for about only 10% of the time. Usually they are placed to help with turning the ship so the ship doesn't lean to much and also during rough weather, but during normal sailing they are retracted. They cause drag which slows down the ship and burns more fuel.

 

If there is damage to the stabilizer and no other damage the ship will go out on its next voyage.

You can dial down the drama a bit. The final Concordia customers would certainly disagree. :rolleyes:

It's all good. We get another free day onboard (wish pools were open though). And Abe the cruise director just announced drink special would be a "Mexican Roadrunner" - tequila and prune juice (he was just kidding... The guy cracks me up)

I did purchase the cruise insurance through Royal Caribbean. After talking with them on the phone/guest services for hours (and racking up a $400 phone bill charged to the room - which thankfully is free since everyone had to change their plans) nobody could tell me that it was covered...just that it would be covered if I had purchased airfare through RCCL, which I didn't because I had FF points.

 

When you get home, file a claim with the insurance company for trip interruption. Royal used to brag that their insurance covers air even if you booked on your own. If that has changed I don't recall seeing anything announced. The worst they can do is deny the claim and the best is they will reimburse you.

I feel so bad for the poor bartender by the outside pool bar. There is snow coming down lightly, nobody is out there (of course), and he looks pretty cold. Towel guys look a bit cold too
