Live from the Oasis--Woman Threatens to Kill Security Guards and Family in MDR

From watching strange things unfold once too many times on a ship, if there is no actual fight to break up, the first thing security tries to do is calm the person and the situation down. Then they will do the escort away as necessary.

I doubt they melted to the back of the plane. Typically, Air Marshals are seated in the front of the plane so they can more easily protect the cockpit.

You are incorrect - I was there ! This may be true In a "small plane" such as 767 or even 747 [emoji3] but this was an a380 business class cabin at the front (there are two complete decks) and the only thing directly in front is a staircase and a lounge. The cockpit is closer to the bottom deck.

A 747 and a 767 are considered "small" planes?

On the subject of air marshals: in this case their identity was obvious by their actions but I have always looked (without success) to see if I could identify any in the airport or on the plane. Always hoped they would be flying with me! Any tricks to IDing them?

Yes - threaten to harm someone and they will identify themselves.

Lets keep in mind when the crap hits the fan, the call to security doesn't go out right away. More than likely the dining staff tried to deescalate the situation first and then called for help when it didn't work. Also remember that time perception can be distorted during stressful, ugly, or excitable moments. Just saying sometimes it seems like a long time before incidents like these are brought under control when actually they're not.

They might also have been busy trying to remove any potentially dangerous flying objects.

All federal agents fly armed and are acting as Air Marshals, even when flying with their families. Nowadays, you're more likely to have someone armed on your flight than not.

But do me a favor. Don't ask for tips IDing them. There's very good reason they remain anonymous.

A moment to post our observation of security on the Liberty last month:

In the solarium pool, a guy had his MP3 player going. The folks we were with were all enjoying it, is good songs, not stupidly loud, but an hour or so in to it security told him it had to go.

Everyone in the pool booed. But that should have been the end of it. But this guy got marginally confrontation with the guard, and he lost his support (except from the thong clad blonde with him).

20 mins later the head of security was called and he said he could continue to MP3 - at a lower volume.

We and others in the pool thought this was a bad move for the boss to undermine his staff like that...

Funny thing was, 1.5 songs later the couple got bored and left with their MP3 player.

I think that a vacation situation differs some from real life. Security caving as they did - probably because whoever complained was long gone - probably was the right move because it didn't really set a precedent as everyone is new next week.

So on the whole, we thought security handled it exactly right.

Thanks for the post OP - had forgotten about the whole thing and you stirring our memory gave us a good laugh!

Did everyone else boo when he left?

A little girl just got killed by a elephant throwing a rock and it hitting her head. Throwing silverware could kill someone. I wouldn't care about anything other then getting her under control to stop her malicious behavior. In this day of video phones she reaps what her actions are. She is old enough to know bad behavior. No one needs to worry about protecting this woman from video being posted, it's the other passengers and the security people should worry about. Bless this woman's family for what they have to endure.

Yes, I read about that elephant also. But there are very few rocks and even less elephants on cruise ships. Why would you bring that up? You couldn't find a story about a fork in the eye or a knife in the chest to make your point?

We children of alcoholics carry a lot of baggage into our adult lives. <snipped by sperkins921>

Unfortunately, so do we spouses of alcoholics.

Thankfully, my DH (now sober) never got this bad; but let's just say he too nearly got us thrown off a ship in Key West. This was on X.

As a spouse of a person who had a drinking problem- and before the questions start NO I did NOT know he had a drinking problem before we got married- I feel most sorry for her family. Likely, she's a black out drunk and so does not remember what she did. But her poor family? They can't undo that experience....

I've picked out a couple (literally, only 1 or 2 I think) in the airport before. And I think once or twice on a plane. Ironically only domestic flights. Mostly short haul. Never been able to spot them long haul like a TCON or international flight. Pretty sure they're there, just haven't spotted them.

To be fair, one of airport spots- his dress, demeanor, and briefcase didn't add up. He was dressed in a hawaiian shirt, jeans, a baseball cap for a the Oakland A's (this was in Hartford), and beat up tennies. Yet, he had a very no nonsense military/cop type posture and behavior. And he carried on only a newspaper with a briefcase. Newspaper was a local one, ie not the WSJ or anything, but not local to the area. Say for example he carrying the Denver paper yet being on a first AM flight in say Memphis? His clothes were old and worn, but that briefcase? Sharp and shiny. And very obviously not just a briefcase. Something didn't add up. He ended up sitting next to me in First (I got upgraded) and didn't eat or drink even though we were a 6:45AM into DFW. He had only water during the course of this flight. Kept his briefcase right at his feet. Others didn't seem to notice, but he still stands out in my mind 4 years later........

Not to mention; if they sat in the same seats every time, everybody would know who the air marshals were, and whether or not there were any on that flight. I would guess that they vary their seating, attire, etc.

When I work plain clothes I often wear a San Francisco 49ers or Chicago Bulls hat... And I'm just outside of Toronto.. Don't read into the attire when trying to identify a plain clothes officer..

well aside from their taking too long to arrive, sounds like the poster would have expected them to tackle her to the floor and cuff her, instead of trying to talk her down.

But apparently they did get her out without anybody getting hurt (including her), which is the goal.

knock on wood, I haven't been on a plane or boat yet around somebody who went nuts. It'll probably happen someday though.

Normally I wouldn't have, but there was something about the TOTAL package that for me, screamed air marshall. The clothes were only part of it.

The shoes...it's always the shoes. They'll wear shoes they can run in!

I know an air marshal. You wouldn't pick him out of a crowd, which is the point.

On the other hand, by your description, it's possible you could think some of the people I work with, engineers and construction managers primarily (my hubby included), are air marshals.

Our youngest son worked as an "air marshall" while studying for his law degree. I think that in Israeli planes they are more "geared" towards terrorists...

Anyhow, he used different clothes and other accesorries in order to blend in as much as possible, for example, taking his tennis racket when travelling to a holiday destination.

BUT, there was one flight when he was completely taken by surprise -- a plane full of Greek Orthodox priests, after a pilgrimage to Jerusalem... All of them in long black clothes, with long black beards :)

I agree, they should remain anonymous, however, we were on one flight with one guy that definitely was a federal agent. Maybe he was off duty, but it was clear he was "someone". We boarded early because my DH was a United 1K at the time. This guy also boarded at same time and had exit row window opposite our exit row. He handed the flight attendant a folded letter, she just nodded and walked to the front of the plane. He was in a business suit and sunglasses on the whole trip. During the flight, the flight attendant handed him a note and he read it and then got up and went forward to the galley. He was gone a long time and I got up to use the restroom during that time. I saw him in the galley, crouched over in a corner, talking on his cellphone.

Not sure who or what he was, but he was very interested in a guy that got up to use the restroom when the aisle was blocked with a beverage cart at the front because the pilot was in the restroom. The flight attendant told the guy to go sit and he kept moving towards her. He did turn around and sit eventually.

I am a very nervous flyer so I tend to notice what people are up to. This whole thing didn't worry me as much as the guy in a pilot's uniform, reading a flight manual that I saw not soon after 9/11.

Please do not ask for how you can ID air marshalls. Why would anyone think that's a good idea? Sigh. I also know an air marshall and you would never be able to pick him out based on appearance. Looks just like any other traveler. I also know a few Secret Service agents (family and where we live) and they fly with their weapon as long as the pilot agrees to it, which they usually do.

Some airports have air marshalls on every flight, other's do not.

.........I get the urge to do that, but you could actually destroy her life like that. She needs to hit rock bottom so she can come back up and create a new life. But if you destroy any possibility of a future by filming that bad moment (that might or might not be her rock bottom), you are eliminating her future. SHE has to hit rock bottom; you don't need to do that TO her........

Why should others worry about ruining her life? Looks like she already has. If she hasn't hit rock bottom yet, maybe this is what she needs to get there. These days with everyone having smart phones, cameras and video cams she has to know they are everywhere and that her horrible actions could possibly be posted. Also, no one is making her hit rock bottom but herself. With an attitude like that she doesn't need to be coddled she needs to be dealt with. She could have hit someone in the eye with a utensils. I wished they would have kicked her off. Next time she might have second thoughts about acting like an idiot.
