We left Buenos Aires on 12/5/17. I, and many other passengers got an upper respiratory infection by the next wee. It is April 25 and I am still having problems. Been on antibiotics, prednisone, and other over the counter stuff. Still coughing. Does anyone have answers?? What is this? I would appreciate any help.

Go to your doctor. Welcome to CC.

Don't be so quick to dismiss. The poster is looking for others who may have the same symptoms. They found someone. My husband and myself.

Although not on a Celebrity cruise, we got the same on HAL and have been home for over a month and still have the cough. Not as bad but it is the longest we have ever had symptoms like this from a cold (assumed that's what it was). We had cold like symptoms but not normal.

There was someone in the next cabin who coughed constantly all week on his verandah. We sounded just like him when we got home. We wondered if whether or not the cleaning crew spread that to our cabin. Probably not likely but a lot of passengers were coughing on that cruise before we disembarked.

No we did not go to the doctor. Were getting ready to but symptoms started to subside.

Welcome also to Cruise Critic. I hope you enjoy in the future as you research cruises and destinations. Sorry you are having such a bad time at present but I do have to agree with the previous post that you really do need to revisit your doctor.

Were you in Buenos Aires? Were you on the same ship? No. So you have no idea what she may have. You did not even go to the Doctors, so NO.....she did NOT find "someone". No one here is being dismissive. We want her to seek medical advice.

Been 22 family doctors and one ENT. Been prescribed all kinds of antibiotics. Still coughing.

Fran, please go to the ER. This may be something very serious. (yes, I am an RN). Tell them which Islands you visited. They will do a complete work-up pertaining to those Islands. Antibiotics are not always the answer. Please go dear. I implore you. Prayers to your recovery.

Why are you being so mean? I'm merely telling her that I had similar symptoms and am also still coughing!

Mary, I was not being mean and I'm sorry you got that impression. I was making a point. You stated she found "someone" and we were all being dismissive. Both statements are incorrect. You were not on the same ship and not on the same Islands.....hence, the likelihood of the two of you having the same problem is almost zero. I am sorry you have had your cough for 4 weeks and glad you are getting better......but this lady has had hers for almost 5 months. This is very serious. PS: You probably would have recovered a lot sooner, had you seen a Doctor. OTC medications do not always work for coughs. Sometimes you need an RX.

I've never caught a respiratory infection when I wee. The kidney stones, however were awful. Sorry I know that's bad! What I'd do, is check back on the roll call. Also you're pretty much doing the right thing by starting a thread on this. Do keep it active, as it will go dormant if there are no responses. Sounds like the meds you took show you've been to the Dr. I almost wonder if you might have picked up some parasite as well.

I got a respiratory infection on Millennium in Asia and the cough lasted 4 months. It finally just went away. If it is a virus, antibiotics may not help. Is it worse at night? Have you been xrayed? I wish you all the best in getting rid of this

On our infinity cruise around the horn last month, six friends took ill. All had coughs. But there is where the similarity ended. One had a diagnosis of bronchitis, got antibiotics from the ship's doctor, and further antibiotics from personal physician at home. One tested positive for flu. Another had strep throat. I developed laryngitis and my cough and lethargy lasted six weeks. The point is, there were several illnesses going around. Furthermore Nobody knows where any of them were contracted, was it from a shore excursion bus driver? From a fellow passenger? A waiter at a pre cruise hotel? The person they sat next to on the plane? So I'm not sure anyone here, even if they had been on your cruise and developed cough, can really help much. There are too many variables. See your local doctors and specialists. That's all you can do.

On the Silhouette TA in November there were quite a number of people who were impacted by a horrible bug (viral or bacterial - who knows). For some of us, the illness persisted for months following the cruise. The common symptom was a horrific cough. At some point in transit, crew were observed chaniging airfilters in some hallways - probably due to the upcoming US inspection, but worth mentioning,

It is worth seeking more info from fellow cruisers in hopes of finding a clue to a remedy or diagnosis (which by no means is a substitute for your doctors care).

I hope the OP finds relief. FWIW, most of us just had to wait it out.

Why are people saying go to the ER? If the person has already been seen by several physicians they probably do not need to go the ED unless they're experiencing a sudden worsening of symptoms. And even then, they should try the after hours service with their PCP unless they believe it's a life threatening and immediate emergency.

An ER is the last place you want to go to get help with a lingering problem, for one they're prioritizing life threatening problems over a cough, second follow up care is very difficult to coordinate if you go to the ED unless you're admitted for observation/treatment, and third an ER visit can be very expensive especially if you're not admitted.

An Immediate Care/Urgent Care center might be one option for after-hours treatment, depending on the location. However most primary care/family care practices have multiple physicians, so you could get a 2nd (3rd) opinion from them. As was mentioned, pulmonologist would be a respiratory doc that I'd probably start thinking about over an ENT.

You may want to ask about a PPD test just to be certain (assuming you weren't vaccinated for BCG).

I assume you also had a chest x-ray done and that was negative for anything unusual? Did they prescribe an albuterol inhaler and did that help (e.g., Ventolin)?

Added in Edit: I came home with a nasty cold this past Feb. Between the stress on your body from travel, the exposure to a lot of infectious agents especially ones that don't normally circulate where you live I have to imagine that odds of getting sick go up for a few weeks whenever one travels. Hope you feel better soon!

What ship were you on? We maybe able to direct you to the roll call from that sailing, and you maybe able to find others that sailed with you with similar issues. It could very well be a wide spread thing for that ship and sailing. Sorry you have suffered with it this long, but I would seek another Doctor. I hope you get well very soon!

I agree that going to the ER is definitely not the correct advice (presuming this is a US based OP - I am not familiar with other country's protocol). ER is for urgent and/or life threatening situations, not to be clogged up with people who have had symptoms for months unless they suddenly accelerate to something critical.

I suggest a pulmonologist as well. I was not on that cruise, but once had a bad cough for months which in my case turned out to be due to sinus congestion and post nasal drip that had originally started as a bad cold. It took several months of Flonase to finally alleviate the cough. In the meantime, I had chest x-rays as well as tests on my lungs. Make sure to mention the foreign ports you visited. Sometimes there are illnesses unique (or at least more common) to those areas which may give a clue. If it lingers and it is bad, consider going to a teaching hospital or a hospital like Mayo Clinic.

Unlike some, I don't think it is a bad idea to reach out to your Roll Call as there may have been a particular virus or illness going around that has been identified that may at least give your doctors a better clue as to what to test for. It couldn't hurt.

I developed a very nasty respiratory infection on the Amsterdam sailing a 56 day segment of the world cruise from January to March. I say about 1/2 the ship had it. I ended up needing three rounds of antibiotics two rounds of prednisone, a steroid inhaler plus the rescue albuterol inhaler. I saw my family physician and my asthma doctor. The chief engineer admitted doing a Q&A he needed to change all the air filters in the staterooms but he was waiting permission from Seattle to approve the cost. Who knows what was blowing in the room. IF I didn't get better with the third round of antibiotics my doctor were going to send me to an infectious disease doctor. One annoying thing although so many were sick the Amsterdam didn't go into the super cleaning mode since it wasn't noravirus which they have to report. I did have a chest x-ray towards the end to rule out pneumonia.
