cruisegirl1 Posted January 20, 2018 #1 Share Posted January 20, 2018 On Oasis last week. We left a shirt on the balcony one night because it was so smoky from the casino. In the morning, a cigarette butt was on the shirt and had actually burned a small hole and attached to the nylon fabric. Luckily there was no fire, but the thought of it was awful. We called security immediately. They took a look, took photos and made areport and they sent us a loss repot. The security staff were professional and when they entered the cabin, they made a point to tell us they were using body cameras. They also made a point to remind us not to leave anything on the balcony. However if we were simply relaxing out there, the cigarette could have hit us as well. Never knew where the cigarette smoker was located. No way to know if the butt was thrown over from the smoking deck or from a nearby balcony. We were on deck 10, smoking deck was deck 15. It all ended ok - but the thought of a potential fire was alarming. I know many still smoke on balconies, please do not throw the cigarette butts overboard!!!!! voyager70 Posted January 20, 2018 #2 Share Posted January 20, 2018 That is alarming, glad you weren't hurt. As a smoker I always follow the rules and try to be as considerate as possible. Shame some people still choose to break the rules.
Rare BirdTravels Posted January 20, 2018 #3 Share Posted January 20, 2018 Good thing that violating the “no items left on balcony” did not cause a bigger problem for the entire ship.
Paulxyz2004 Posted January 20, 2018 #4 Share Posted January 20, 2018 Shame some people still choose to break the rules. I agree and this includes those who leave personal stuff on the balcony unattended, as this is obviously a fire hazard as well.
Langley Cruisers Posted January 20, 2018 #5 Share Posted January 20, 2018 Glad this didn't turn into something bigger, but if OP is anything like me, that smoky shirt and I could not have lived in the same cabin for any length of time.
cb at sea Posted January 20, 2018 #6 Share Posted January 20, 2018 If you had been IN the shirt, and the butt had fallen onto you, you would have smacked it away pretty fast!
cruisegirl1 Posted January 20, 2018 Author #7 Share Posted January 20, 2018 I agree and this includes those who leave personal stuff on the balcony unattended, as this is obviously a fire hazard as well. My post was to remind others not to throw the lit cigarettes over, not to debate my leaving a shirt on the balcony. An item on the balcony is only a fire hazard if someone throws a lighted cigarette over board. What if someone was relaxing on the balcony and is hit in the face with a lit cigarette. Or, a balcony door is open and the lighted butt flies in. I know I was opening myself up when I made the post - and I know folks smoke on the balcony - but that is not the point. The point was to remind others not to throw cigarette butts overboard. Thanks, M

Thanks, M I know what your post was about, but it also showed that not only throwing a cigarette over board is a fire hazard and breaking the rules, but leaving stuff on the balcony is the same fire hazard and for obvious good reasons against the rules as well. But you might just want to chose the rules for others to obey, while it´s up to you to ignore other rules.
Ocean Boy Posted January 20, 2018 #10 Share Posted January 20, 2018 How is a shirt, or lets say a towel, left on a balcony a fire hazard but the same shirt or towel left in a cabin is not a fire hazard? Most shirts and towels do not spontaneously combust. The fire hazard is the cigarette discarded by the inconsiderate and thoughtless smoker. Now if you want a comment for you to keep your clothing off the balcony at night think back to Yorkvillain’s Grandeur review from last summer if I remember correctly. The one where he found pubes on his balcony in the morning. Maybe he will read this and repost the photo.
applehazar Posted January 20, 2018 #13 Share Posted January 20, 2018 Maybe not relevant but cigarette and cigars smoking on balcony’s are NEVER ENFORCED We stay regularly in jr suites next to grand suites. The people in grand suites believe they own the cruise line and when we Complain about smoke nothing ever happens. Sorry but this is my documented opinion ! Last year on navigator we had to have our toilet replaced because cigar remnants came up our toilet. Really IT WAS NEXT DOOR Sorry but that’s the truth Sent from my iPhone using Forums

I still remember seeing the first time around and do not need another reminder. Thanks Andrew for bringing that up after I had forgotten about it. Rare A&L_Ont Posted January 20, 2018 #17 Share Posted January 20, 2018 Some things from the past are better left in the past!:eek::eek: Maybe they were “set free” from above by someone joining the balcony club. I am sure the cruiser that drags their mattresse out and sleeps on their balcony would not want to discover that on them the next morning. :')

racerxspeedy Posted January 20, 2018 #19 Share Posted January 20, 2018 What if I’m wearing the shirt that catches on fire? A lit cigarette dropped and landed on my arm last cruise. Minor burn, but I can’t believe people think it’s ok to make my balcony their ashtray.

TinkBellaMom Posted January 21, 2018 #25 Share Posted January 21, 2018 I did not know it was against the rules to leave anything on the balcony. I must admit I have been breaking the rules. I always pin our wet bathing suits to a chair to dry. I have even forgotten them overnight.
