FL proposes Beach smoking ban, will Royal follow lead?

That’s easy to answer, NOTHING.  There would be no need to prevent smokers who smoke in the Casino from saturating themselves with smoke and then walking into the MDR or elevator, if the Casino was non smoking.  I’ve had smokers at our MDR table, between courses, excuse themselves to run out and have a smoke in the Casino and then run back in for the next course and bringing the stench of smoke on their person for all those at the table to enjoy.

We had a guy on Brilliance that sat at the first slot machine in the entrance puffing away and reading his book.  I guess he just didn't care that  his smoke was drafting to the common areas on the ship.

I don't mind them providing an outside area to smoke, usually one side of the pool deck.  I just avoid that area altogether.  I sure wish they would do away with smoking in the casino.

That’s the common line smokers use. The Casinos in the NE are surviving quite well after banning smoking. Actually, many say they are actually doing better.

I'm not a smoker, never have been, never will be. As long as it's not illegal, they should be afforded some rights like everybody else.

It’s very possible the Celebrity might be in our future. However, that really has nothing to do with Royal preventing smoking in the Casino. What about the crew that is forced to work hours and hours in a smoke filled environment? It’s not fair to expose them to second hand smoke.

Well, the "poor crew" have a much higher percentage of smokers than the US, ranging up to 75% for Indonesian males, and around 40% for most of the crew ethnicities.  One major reason the Carnival non-smoking ship experiment failed was their inability to retain sufficient non-smoking crew to work the ship.

At the risk of going off-topic, as recreational marijuana use become more wide spread and the 15.5% figure rises, I wonder how cruise lines will react.

Regardless of whether marijuana is legalized in the US, even nationwide, the ships are not subject to US laws.  They are subject to the laws of the flag state (Bahamas for RCI ships, where marijuana is illegal), and also to international law, which severely restricts drug use by mariners, so to prevent any possible cross-contamination between passengers and crew, the cruise lines would ban marijuana even if the flag state allowed it.

Chef. Just think of the benefit this would offer the crew to work in a smoke free environment. I think the crew still has a smoking area on the ship in the crew area. They are not allowed to smoke in the Casino.

Most of the world, in particular the areas where cruise ship crew are recruited, don't worry about "smoke free environments" considering the general air quality in those countries, and the higher percentage of primary smokers who influence non-smokers in their home countries.  Yes, they do have a smoking area, outside, and I can't recall the number of complaints here on CC about the crew smoking areas impinging on passenger areas.  And, on a totally smoke free cruise, the extremists would complain if the crew even smelled a little like smoke while doing their duties.

While I don't dispute the dangers of smoking or second hand smoke, I also don't condone forcing our mores and attitudes on others, or even thinking that they would like to "do things our way".

You have as much of a chance of cruise lines prohibiting smoking as the casinos, especially in Las Vegas, do. Slim to none. Too much revenue to lose.

Well then those chances must be great, considering Celebrity prohibits it, and it's prohibited on several HAL ships.

Not really, most towns do a good job cleaning the beach - this is just north of PE

I think the reference was to "other" kinds of "butts", those more commonly seen on beaches in warm climates.

I thought the discussion was more along the lines of smoking in the Casino. Royal already provides outdoor smoking areas. Not asking to remove those.

Problem with outdoor smoking areas occurs when there is bad weather and those areas are closed.

Also, I have a problem with references to second hand smoke and its relation to lung cancer. The EPA did a study of  recent lung cancer deaths among non smokers and found that the leading  cause was Radon, a naturally occurring gas in rock.

I lived in Connecticut, and when i bought a home, a radon inspection was a requirement. It  turned out positive, and they had to drill  a hole in the foundation , install a duct to the outside  with a fan to draw the gas outside.

Only the leading cause of lung cancer deaths should be addressed ?

Since you brought up a beach smoking ban, I thought that "Royal following suit" meant you wanted to ban outside smoking as well.  If you only want to ban it in casinos, what would a Florida beach smoking ban have to do with that?

Well said, as usual.  I have a difficult time making the connection as well.

Yes. The proposed legislation is to ban smoking on public beaches. Florida also voted to ban vaping indoors. I put smoking and vaping in the same breath (no pun intended). Royal should ban smoking indoors.

I thibk its great more legislation is coming out aganst smoking. UK has banned smoking in indoor areas and it applies to cruise ships as well. Good move.

The weather is not our problem. It’s too bad if it’s too rough or too windy or rainy or whatever. Indoors should be smoke free.

Are you saying that cruise ships sailing from the UK prohibit smoking in the casinos?

That has been Royal's policy for cruises originating in the UK and Australia.

There are many places in the US that have banned smoking indoors as well. There are even  more than a few places that have outlawed smoking inside a personal vehicle if children are in the vehicle.

Really, no smoking on ships for the entire cruise.  Wonder what smokers do to survive.:classic_biggrin:
