Passengers Behaving Badly - Fight broke out in Haven Lounge on Getaway

Well folks, this just in. An unfortunate brawl broke out in the Haven Lounge shortly after departing Cozumel today. Broken glass and grown men on the floor. Kudos to the crew who responded with dozens of officers and security including the ship’s doctor to attend to the injured.

It’s a shame but I can’t imagine it’s the first time this has happened. It will be interesting if the passengers run into each other in the close quarters of the Haven with a day at sea. Beverage packages have been shut off.

I’m still gathering details but I heard it involved a child sitting at the bar, a drunk passenger striking up a conversation and a mother who told the guy to stop talking to her kid and may or may not have called him a fat drunk. At this point, the kid’s dad got involved and got in the face of the drunk guy. Not sure who threw the first punch but at least one other passenger tries to break it up. We walked in shortly after and that intervening passenger had blood all over his shirt. The crew put in hazmat suits and worked to sanitize every surface.

A lot of drama. A first for me.

Hopefully one or both combatants are in the brig and no longer a hazard to the passengers and crew.

So both combatants are free to cause problems again?  Punishment is no UBP for you!

From what I can tell, yes. We heard one of the ship’s officers say if they cause any more issues they will be removed from their cabin.

They are watching them like a hawk. They’re being tailed by crew from what I can see. They’re not exactly getting to enjoy their “freestyle” cruise any longer. I’m not sure what the appropriate recourse is here but I’m pretty impressed with the crew so far.

Everyone knows what happened and there are a lot of uncomfortable stares. And the Haven lounge is a lot quieter tonight.

Gosh, hate the child was exposed to this .... especially the way the parents reacted.

How much better it would have been if the mother had just gone elsewhere with the child.  :classic_rolleyes:

Not that I condone any of this, but children do not belong sitting at the bar, period. Huge pet peeve.

I agree!  In my 37 years as a police officer I have found the best course of action involving a fight is the winner goes to jail and the loser goes to the hospital and then to jail!

Horrible experience , but totally agree, children sitting at a bar should not be allowed!!!  My pet peeve also!

Normally I would totally agree with this too, but since there are no soda dispensers, kids are kind of forced to go to the bar for beverages. It would make sense that some would stay there, especially if they are with their parents. On land, though, 100% agree that kids have no place at a bar!

Respectfully - should it not be the one that throws the first punch that goes to jail? Sure you can have verbal conflict (which may or may not be an offense), but I had always assumed the first person to escalate it with a physical reaction is the aggressor and anything the other person does in retaliation is self defense?

I've had a few stern words with people in the past but if they threw me a punch and I reacted, I'd hate to think I'd go to jail for that. :classic_huh:

Very sad.  IMHO its a commentary on where society is going.  Its becoming more and more frequent.  Brawls at malls are nothing new.  Fights at schools have increased.  Airports see this kind of behavior all the time especially on the planes. Now its happening on cruise ships.  Alcohol no doubt plays a major part.  But IMHO its the sense of entitlement society has today.  Rules for who, me?  People now even think they can bully the police with their phone cameras.  Its all moving to a very scary direction.  If I was the captain these people would have been off the ship.  Call me harsh but I have zero tolerance for this kind of nonsense.

There are plenty of examples of BOTH groups (citizens and police) believing that the rules/laws don't apply to them.

I don't understand this?  I think you are painting with way too broad of a brush.  Never stated anything which you allege.  Why are you bringing police misconduct into this?  I was not dividing groups but giving examples of brawls even when the police show up.  You love to comment on other's comments but you are spinning my comments into something I never said.  Its ridiculous that I even have to reply to this.  My comments on society include EVERYONE.  I just wish you would read comments before you reply to them so fast.
