Eating while getting food in the buffet 😖

Absolutely

I thought that would be the case, so I would lift my daughter up and she would do it, but, that turned out to be one big mess and caused us to get escorted out of the buffet. It got a little awkward during the kerfuffle when my bathrobe came off, but luckily I was barefoot so I had good traction on the tile floor, so it wasn't too bad. I didn't fall down. The weirdest thing happened though for the remainder of that cruise....they would sit us down when we entered, took our order and brought our food. It was the best!!! This was at the buffet nonetheless.

I should tell you guys about that one time I was so thirsty, I dunked my head under the water dispenser, but I made sure not to make contact with my lips....no different than a drinking fountain right? same rules apply!

Have a good night all!!! You guys are hilarious!

Sorry, don't agree. If I pick up a piece of bacon, or a breadstick, or whatever and eat it, without ever touching my mouth with my fingers. what's it to you besides an apparent annoyance?  I always use tongs. If my fingers have a touch of grease on them which is doubtful, it may be annoying but it is no less clean or healthy and nothing at all like double dipping. No bodily fluids involved so where and how are the germs transferred??

This is why I use the tongs to put the bacon in my mouth.  Why get the tongs greasy?

Unsure whether to be amused or saddened that, despite a seemingly never ending supply of nutcasery, this thread survives like the proverbial cockroach in a nuclear storm. I think Mike981 said it best way back in post #75, “If you go in public and eat, you have lost all control. Plain and simple.”

Do you smorgasbord activists really believe that (what you consider to be) good behaviour in the buffet line will protect you from unwanted tiny critters??? Whether your fellow passenger has sneaked a fry or a strip of bacon while in line or not, you have NO IDEA where his or her hands have been prior to entering the buffet. And what about the staff who work with the food? Do you actually believe those signs that say staff MUST wash their hands work 100% of the time? I’ve personally witnessed the dean of a medical school exiting a public toilet without so much as even looking at the sink! And even if everyone does wash, sanitize and doesn't snack while in line, they WILL touch the armrest of a chair that has not been cleaned, or a table which has been wiped with a cloth that is no longer sterile. A restaurant, whether a buffet or a 3 star culinary temple is a playground for all manner of invisible organisms - "plain and simple".

And I love how, when the logical fallacies of their proposed sanitation practices are pointed out, the activists turn to “good manners” as their refuge. Manners, especially in todays day and age are largely subjective. What’s important to you may be of no consequence to another - not because they’re “disgusting pigs” but because their view and priorities are different from yours AND just as valid. Furthermore, let’s not forget that manners differ greatly among different cultures. Fork in right hand or left? Some cultures eat with their hands. Bread on a separate plate or simply placed on the table? What YOU do is not necessarily what others do - and neither is right or wrong.

Get a life, people - or stay home. It’s the only surefire way to ensure that other people’s nasty little bugs don’t come a courting your nasty little bugs.

You summarized it nicely.

Because I think I can pick up a single potato chip off my plate in line and eat it (HORROR OF HORRORS!!) I have basically been accused of not having manners, of licking my fingers in line (never), picking my nose (that has exactly what to do with this?, and no, for the record I don't), being a pig at the trough, being a disgusting pig, of spreading heaven only knows what terrible germs I may have breathed onto my fingers when I bit into that chip, and the list goes on.  And these people lecture me about manners!!

Come on, it's a buffet, not Murano.  Emily Post is not turning over in her grave because I ate a potato chip in line.  People with such sensitivities should probably avoid buffets.   And the few germs I might possibly, remotely, very unlikely spread by breathing on my fingers when I ate that chip are no more than are already on the fingers I am already using to pick up the tongs (yes, I always use the tongs), and move the chair to sit in, and touch the table as I sit down, and breathe into the air as I walk past,  and ........I think you get the picture.

ps.  I always hold elevator doors for people, I always move to the back of the elevator to make room, I never reserve lounge chairs, I always say please and thank you, I always treat the staff wonderfully, I always follow the dress code, I always wait my turn and every other sensible type of manners you can think of.  Just for the record.  End of rant

I try to keep a positive attitude no matter where I go. I know that something, somewhere at sometime is gonna get me. It's called life. (And this is why I buy a beverage package on cruises. Alcohol can kill some germs and can be ingested, unlike bleach. )

Measles are coming back, the CDC is gearing up for the next pandemic and most of this earth is going to hell in a handbasket. I will still cruise and at some point may even visit the buffet.

If the buffet can cause harm to you, I appreciate that and hope you stay safe. I will do my part to keep it clean.

Not one of us gets out of this life alive. Enjoy cruising while you can.

So true. I've always said that the cause of death is birth...the rest is details. Enjoy the journey.

Hi, I’m the guy who started this topic over a year ago. Just wondering if your feelings about eating while in a buffet line have changed?

This is awesome, well played!  I didn’t actually answer last year, but buffets make me kind of sick (since that time I saw a kid sneeze on food, and be whisked away by Mummy).  So either year.......ugh, no, do not chow down until you sit down.

Yes, the buffet will never be the same. Thanks for bringing back memories.

Special thanks to BNBR who suggested that we could improve sanitation by using the tongs to put the food directly into our mouths.

Mine haven’t changed at all... 😉

But most, if not all, of the aforementioned practices will be gone when X eliminates the self-serve aspect of the buffets. Per Richard Fain, going forward, staff will plate up guest's food in the buffets.

Agree. Works for cruises that have a norovirus outbreak (never been on one of those ships/cruises). On RC on sea days they have a salad bar set up called the "Tutti Salad Bar" (protected by sneeze guards) in the MDR and you point to the many different salad selections/toppings and salad dressing you want. The server builds you custom salad for you than hands it to you finished.  🥗

Nothing new about that.  We were on the Regent Splendor when things were breaking early March. It has some stations in the buffet, around the edge, with personnel behind, and others that are islands in the middle with no "backspace" (IIRC all the islands in Celebrity buffets have backspaces). For the last few days of the trip, they stationed servers by the islands and they simply got you whatever you asked for, as did the servers behind the serving areas that had backspaces.  Nobody got to serve himself any more.  You handed over or held out your plate, which may already have stuff on it, and he added whatever new thing you asked for. Worked fine.  Of course, with the greater volume of pax on X they will likely need more servers, but it doesn't seem insurmountable to me.

Nope, never said it was new. Just doable. I'll let the cruise lines figure out the logistics of the buffets. Above my pay grade. We there for the ride. IMO all the cruise lines will need to eliminate self serve buffets and go to the cafeteria style serving buffets. Long over due and doable. We rarely go to the buffets but disagree with those that say buffets on cruise ships need to be eliminated.

Tasting food while in line at a buffet just doesn't look good .

It looks very low class and is upsetting (  to me ) to watch someone slide something back thinking nobody is watching, or, perhaps they don't care.

Unless there is a medical reason, why not wait and enjoy the food while sitting at a table.
