From the Sept 2020 project update:

"Construction of the solar installation on Car Park 1 - the car park closest to the terminal building - is approaching completion. The solar structures will offer a shaded parking option for 230 vehicles while passengers are enjoying their cruise. It will also provide significant renewable energy for PBPL, generating around 1,300MW of power each year - the equivalent of powering around 106 homes."

It is good that there is the option of 'shaded' parking. I hope that equates to 'under cover'. When we leave our car, my husband is concerned about the possibility of hail damage so he always opts for under cover.

Probably not.  More like the shaded parking in shopping centres.

The shaded area of the carpark in our shopping centre has large heavy-duty shadecloth sails. If the shaded area at the cruise terminal is under solar panels, presumably they would be on a solid roof - maybe like an enormous carport roof.

Yes, that's exactly what they're like. I've seen that somewhere but can't remember where.

It's a great idea, it utilizes space that would normally only be used for one thing - parking cars - and provides shade for those cars.

Clever idea.

We parked under a shady tree at Hervey Bay Airport.  A sole staff member suggested it was the worst spot in the car park, as car would be covered in bird poo on our return.  So we shifted car and no bird poo on return.

These look so much better in a parking area doing double duty - shade and power generation - compared to those ugly acres of stand alone solar farms where not even grass will grow in their shade.

Talk about green power 🙄  Sorry, bit of a rant!!

Grass loves shade. Should see it  after I've parked my car on my lawn for a few days.

That would be a particular coastal grass.

But it doesn’t grow in areas of high sun capture that these are in, even the townies can’t grow grass, car on lawn or not. So no chance under solar farms!

Probably right, just don’t like the look of these, even around Canberra 🙄

But I still think the long term answer to our power is balance; coal, gas, nuclear and renewables. Just sayin ……

I've never yet seen a power plant of any kind anywhere that won an award for prettiness.

I don't mind where the power comes from, so long as those producing the power pay for all the externalities. The damage caused by pollution (including CO2 and CH4), the fresh water usage, the cost of decommissioning, the rehabilitation of mines, etc. All without government subsides. Then we'll get to see what the long term answer is.

I snuck into the terminal today and before I was thrown out I got this photo:

These prices seem to be roughly comparable to Brisbane airport parking prices, although Car Park 3 is not undercover.

6 hours is more expensive that a whole day.
