Disinfecting

Should it be a condition of entry to dining areas that you disinfect your hands? I believe it should be. On oasis last week I lost count of the number of arrogant passengers who ignored, not only the dispensers, but also the offer from a bottle by a member of staff.

Nope.

Although I do use the Purell upon entrance, I don't feel it should be a condition upon entry. I guess I must be one of those low life "arrogant" people huh?

I believe that a good hand washing, limited use of using my hands on stairs, doors, and the natural ability of my skin to protect me from viruses and bad bacteria are sufficient.

Maybe they just washy-washy in the bathroom and didn't want to washy-washy again...

We use the hand washing stations and Purell whenever and wherever offered, whether at a dining venue or places like the Casino.

 

Hopefully it gives us some protection from those who ignore the offers and hope they stay illness free as well..

Yes.  It should be enforced.  And the ship has every right to create a policy and enforce it if they so choose.

Walking up the plank into a ship with a crowd of 2000 people and acting like your only concern is whether or not YOU get sick is just perverse.  That's the kind of person that gets pushed out of a life boat.

On our Independence cruise in May there was hand washing basins at the entrance to Windjammer and there was a couple of crew constantly singing the wishy washy song.

We wash our hands or use the antibacterial wash every time we enter a dining area or getting back on the ship.

That is exactly what we do in the washroom just outside the DR or WJ before entering that venue as this is more effective against germs that just using the dispenser stuff.

Indeed! As we learned on the recent "Noro-Cruise" Purell does NOT kill the norovirus.

 

In order to keep that at bay, you need to have a Hydrogen-peroxide base solution. We bought some wipes for our last cruise to clean our room, just in case.

 

On the other hand, I do use the Purell as much as I see it. I want to make sure I am not going to get anything ELSE a cruise ship might throw at me.

I always wash my hands thoroughly before going into the MDR or WJ.  I don't like the hand sanitizer but use it anyways as well.

Here's the bottom line: Don't count on hand sanitizers for 100% protection from anything. Do wash your hands often. And when you can't wash your hands, do use hand sanitizers. Even the FDA agrees they get rid of a lot of the germs that are on your hands.

What if one is allergic to something in the hand sanitizer?  That doesn't make the person arrogant, just allergic.

No it should not. Count me in with those that will never use the Dispensers and who will Always answer the offer from a bottle with a cheerful "No Thank you". 

I will Always use a Hand washing Station if provided, even though I´m Always getting my Hands washed before going to eat.

However knowing how to correctly disinfect your Hands and knowing the "washy washy" nonsense has Nothing to do with proper Hand sanitationI will Always refuse to do it. It´ not only giving a false sense of safety it´s actually worse than doing Nothing.

 

I´ve had very few cases when they really forced it onto me, which I have simply dealt with in heading straigt to the next available napkin and get the stuff cleaned off my Skin.

Then you won't  mind if we also count you in as the person to point at and blame when the entire ship is vomiting and racing to the lavatories because you were the one guy we spotted not washing his hands before sitting down to eat and is now responsbile for all of us having Norovirus.

Using Hand Sanitizers is actually worse than doing nothing?

It may give a false sense of safety regarding Ecoli, etc., but it removes many other germs. 

And certainly not worse than doing nothing!

Although purell isn't perfect, the dinner roll basket is back on the table. And if I'm not seated first at a group table no rolls for me. 

I have seen some pretty well groomed people over the years. And then been horrified when invited to their homes. (Oink)

Better to do something than nothing at all.   I think only bleach will kill bacteria, viruses etc.  If you wash your hands in the restroom then do not touch anything including faucet handles , door handles .  

 

We used to wipe down our lab tables with bleach in the graduate microbiology classes that I took for two years.

I won´t mind it at all, as I will be the one still sitting down and enjoying my meal, being fully healthy. 

You would be free to Point at me, though I wouldn´t understand why, other than to applaude me for still being healthy and obviously Performing better Hygiene than themselves with that Hand sanitizing joke.

 

It´s called personal Hygiene "my friend". Like it or not. It will Need a bit more than you to bring me in your line.

We had the washy washy staff person try this the first time I was going into the WJ on our last  RCI cruise even though I had told him that I had just washed my hands in the nearby washroom. He even tried to block me from entering to force me to use the sanitize hand spray but I simply walked around him. I spoke to the first officer I saw in the WJ about what this staff member was doing which  stopped this nonsense from happening to us again.
