Much kudos to Jan Schwartz for sending David Abel a large bottle of Tallisker whisky!!!!!  And it would appear that he is loving it and is so grateful!  A beautiful gesture from the CEO of Princess Cruiselines.  Well done!

Great news, hey?

Fantastic news. I was so hoping Princess would gift him some and they did. Well done, Princess.

According to BNO newsroom, "several more" people onboard have fallen sick and been evacuated -- but it is not known at this time if it is related to the virus.   There are many people onboard in less than ideal conditions now so not everything will be the virus, but everything will be treated as if it were.     Sending good thoughts to all affected.

I'm beginning to think that they need to be evacuated to shore.  This must be incredibly stressful, which can weaken the immune system.   I really do not quite understand the thinking, this stuff spreads in hospitals quite well so keeping the well people onboard and taking sick people ashore doesn't make a whole bunch of sense.   It is the opposite of a quarantine in my opinion...

I have to agree but at this point they are 1/2 way thru...and clearly Japan does not want them on their soil which is their right ...however a very high % are their own citizens.  Also agree that with a situation like this and over 3000++ people there will be other medical emergencies especially considering the age demographics of this cruise.  Given no other ports will take them guess not much else to do.

Princess is playing this very smart....doing their best to keep David happy...considering the situation he has been so supportive of Princess...better than any high paid PR person they could hire...he may find he has an offer for a commercial for them in the future and my guess is he may sail with them again. Says he is a "Celebrity" guy but I bet that changes. Very smart move for Princess...

Apparently on David's latest video he was not aware that there are now  6 more cases. confirmed and 100 not "feeling well".  This is being reported by most international world news sources.  This strategy seems to be not to test everyone but only those not feeling well and the more they test the more they find. I was a bit optimistic this morning as I watched David's video as he was enjoying the bottle of whiskey they finally brought him but  I think his next video may be more sobering.  There needs to be a demand by governments of the various passengers to test all of them and get those people off the ship that are testing positive.   I am sure they are trying their best to deal with this...the World Dream in HK will be taking people off today meantime this situation just gets worse and worse. People are still being diagnosed 1/2 way through the quarantine....sure hope the respective governments at the end of this takes them not by commercial flights but charter designed to handle more potential cases and quarantine upon arrival in the country they travel to.

any reports of any outbursts or violence by either the crew or passengers ? gotta be getting close to a 'breaking point' for some people knowing they have at least 10 more days of this confinement ...

If this is happening I think the passengers are the last to know.  Have not seen any via media but they are reliant on individual passengers' reports. There have to be some cases as you describe.  To be honest I imagine there will be long term issues for some as it is just not the confinement but can you imagine being issued a thermometer and told to monitor your temp. Some are taking it hourly....that stress is more than some can handle and again this is for the most part not a young crowd. DAvid mentioned some counseling hotline people can call...not sure who is at the other end of that.  These passengers have their own facebook group and you can bet there are some stories on there....the psychological impact of returning to that port and watching people rolling out on stretchers into ambulances.  I frankly don't know how I would handle this if back in the day my parents were on board etc.  At minimum I think they should get very verbal with media and demand all are tested.

NPR is currently interviewing a 75 and 77 year old couple on the Diamond.  Interesting interview.  They said that at this point the quarantine is scheduled to end on February 19.  Yikes!  At least they have a balcony.

another passenger Gay Courter is commenting to media and on her facebook page...she is a writer. Their cabin has a ringside seat to view the ambulances pull in and pick up people....some are being taken off for the "virus" and others for various reasons. She and her husband mid 70's and high risk. She gives a pretty balanced report on MSNBC https://www.facebook.com/gcourter.

They said no flights to China but when I went to a couple websites I was able to  book round trip flights. From SFO to various cities in China, futhermore if you go to FlightAware you can see several flights in and out of Wuhan.
Is this all some kind of hoax? What is REALLY going on?

Not every airline has cancelled flights to China and some only cancelled to certain cities. You have to sign a waiver on those flight apparently😋.

At least 73 airlines have cancelled flights to China amid coronavirus fears — here's the full list

Great news, hey?

Is Princess cruises reversing their policy regarding providing adult beverages to all the prisoners or just the one with a popular youtube channel?

"Diamond Dave Abel" and "Princess Sally" should get an award for their tough British "take it on the chin" mettle under such challenging circumstances.  There are folks who complain when the least thing goes "wrong," and then there are people like the Abels, who have found a way to leverage the scant coping tools they have been provided to make the best of a trying situation that only the passengers onboard the Diamond right now can truly know.

The whole process is extremely disconcerting, and has me rethinking things from what we pack to how much medication to take when traveling.  It would stand to reason this event will have a permanent effect on the cruiseline industry as a whole once the dust settles.

For now, I am watching these two brave passengers on FB and am humbled and in awe of their fortitude.  Praying they and their fellow pax are all delivered safely to shore soon, and praying there are no more cases discovered after this morning's unpleasant news.

wow wake up to another 6 cases, can't keep a good bug down.

Poor Japanese they are so fearful with the Olympics coming and the whole world coming or at least they hope so.

Next two weeks will be interesting, I'm hearing from my friends that people are returning to Shanghai and many "expecting' to go to work tonight ( there Monday ),  bug is getting ready to spread, you simply can't keep a new bug down

agree however little consolation to those sitting on that ship with the tally going up daily. Most media reporting that outside of Wuhan this is the largest concentration confirmed virus cases  in a single area....and since they are only testing based on "feeling ill" probably more to follow.  A very high % of the passengers are over 70. Just the nature of these kind of cruises.

"We're Totally In The Dark" - Japan Not Doing Enough To Contain Outbreak, 'Diamond Princess' Passengers Warn

Summary:
  • Virus death toll surpasses SARS (total: 813)
  • New cases confirmed in UK, Spain, Singapore
  • Passengers aboard 'Diamond Princess' warn authorities aren't doing enough to protect them - and others
  • Officials in Shenzen say they won't block Foxxconn factory reopening
  • Cruise ship quarantined in Hong Kong allowed to leave after 4 days

* * *

Last night, we reported that Chengdu had been placed under strict lockdown, adding another 14.4 million Chinese to the 400 million+ already living under virtual house arrest across the country as Beijing struggles to contain the coronavirus outbreak that has already claimed more lives than SARS did during its nearly year-long run.

Sppunk, could you forward a message to your friends? (I was going to send you a private message about this, but CC seems to have disabled that feature somewhere along the line.) I can't do much to help the people on board, but maybe I can do something very small.

I run a book publishing company, and I'd like to offer any of our ebook editions free to the passengers to download, to help them pass the time in quarantine. No strings, just to help them out. Having experienced just a single day of quarantine aboard a cruise a few years ago, I can only imagine how stressful it is to wait out that many days, especially those in inside cabins. And the uncertainty of not knowing about the spread of the virus and if you might get it. My heart goes out to them. I think I'd go bonkers, and would welcome any diversions. As the ship library would be unreachable, that got me to thinking maybe I could help in a very small way. I don't want to advertise so I won't post our name, but we have hundreds of books from best-selling and award-winning authors in their genres, so most folks should be able to find something; and not have to stretch their finances further, which I imagine for some could get difficult, not being able to return to work. (I'd hope employers would be understanding, but it could be a hardship for small businesses and the self-employed...) I feel so sorry for everyone on board.

I understand there's a private passengers-only facebook group, so if someone on board could post a brief message with details and the private link to the ebooks, I'd feel glad I could help them out in a very tiny way. You can text me for the details at 720-466-3288.

That is very nice of you.

Who is preparing the food on this ship? Carnival Corp should step up and contract with a local Japanese company to prepare all meals off site to prevent contamination.

Also, it's doubtful the non medically trained crew understands how to maintain precautions against cross contamination. Could outside workers be brought in to deliver meals?

A new study is showing throat swabs might need to be taken from a deeper spot in the lungs- not normally accessible except by medical personnel in a clinic or hospital setting. See flyertalk China coronavirus forum.

All this talk of whiskey and more video entertainment is heartwarming but what the passengers and crew need now are strong advocates. I'd like to see Carnival announce that they've hired several independent MD infectious disease specialists (not on the company payroll) and will follow their recommendations. If their recommendations run counter to what Japan will allow, then Carnival Corp should lobby the Japanese govt hard!

The WHO and the JMH are pretty much in alignment - neither of which are on the "company payroll" -- what would you have done differently? Would you like Carnival to work towards expediting the lifting of the quarantine contrary to the direction of the "MD infections disease specialists" who are already advising the most prudent path forward? Do you want to rush these people off the ship as new cases are still being discovered?
