CDC recommends no gatherings of 50+ for 8 weeks

1. Glad the CDC did this. Spring break college kids body to body isn't helping, which is why Fort Lauderdale and Miami Beach closed portions of their beaches.

2. If RCI goes bankrupt, they all go bankrupt. So since it's not in my control, I'm not going to fret about it.

Ohio has closed all restaurants and bars for in person service.  They can still stay open for take out or delivery if they so choose.  Seems like a reasonable compromise, although I expect that many wait staff will temporarily lose their jobs.

Got home in 2018 by cruising from Dubai to NYC, seemed to be a means of transportation.

Get real. It was a reposition cruise that happens once a year. Hardly the means of transportation that I am talking about.

Note; when comparing bailouts of banks and automakers to cruise lines remember some did not survive.

Oldsmobile, Mercury, Saturn etc.

The cruise marketplace will look very different in a few months, that feels inevitable at this point.

Brands like Princess, Celebrity could disappear.

Aren't you just a bundle of joy. Instead of armchair quarterbacking this whole thing, how about we ride it out stop playing into the what could happen. All it is doing is causing people to panic.

Preparing not panicking. You’re welcome.

Like it or not history does show us some things that could happen.

Not trying to contrary, but I thought I read that Royal is incorporated overseas and doesn’t pay US taxes....not sure that makes them a candidate for any US bailout.

Rcl headquarters are in florida so I am not sure how their business / taxes are structured but that will at least help the employees that work in florida that will most likely be temporarily laid off.

I only go home once a year.

Then do you stay at home for 6 months while waiting  for the next repositioning cruise back?

I'm willing to bet my rapidly shrinking  401k that you are in the exception.

Gatherings meaning?  Planes, trains, buses?  Movies, restaurants?

Right now mass transit if still running in NY.  Schools are closed in NYC and Long Island. I'm not sure about schools  north of the Bronx upstate.  Some retailers are closing. Restaurants are take out of delivery only. Supermarkets have shortened their hours by opening late and closing early. Basically any non essential establishment is closed.  Each state is doing their own thing so it's hard to keep up.  I heard on the Today Show that the beaches in Miami and Fort Lauderdale are closed. Can anyone in Florida confirm this?

Yes, they are closing the public beaches and limiting bar and restaurant hours of operation.

I'm about an hour north of the Bronx. Schools up here are closed for just one week although most expect that will be extended soon.

California is also closing down restaurants (take out only), bars, brew pubs, entertainment venues such as movie theaters, gyms,  and wineries. Several other states have joined in.

More and more casinos are shutting down in Las Vegas. Other states have closed their casinos as well. The news is changing so rapidly that this post will probably be out of date by the time I click on "Submit Reply".

And to think it was only a week ago people were complaining that the cruise lines were being unfairly targeted with calls for restrictions and negative press.

I have been home  2 weeks so far recovering from surgery so I have basically been on quarantine except for 2 quick trips to the supermarket. I can't keep up with what's going on. I will also be out of work  with in the next 10 weeks do to the retailer that I work for closing. As if finding another job at my age isn't hard enough ,now I have to over come the obstacle of all of these shut downs.  I will  be 59 1/2 in July and my have to draw on my 401K to survive but the market is crap and I would hate to have to take that money now. Talk about the perfect storm.

Oldsmobile was dead a loooooooooooooooooong time, many years, before the financial meltdown.

Saturn had been destroyed by GM mis-management. Saturn was supposed to operate semi-autonomously from GM with different platforms, engines, body types (plastic), etc.  That went well for about 10 years.  Then GM raided Saturns money; gave them all badge engineered Chevy's and Opels, and killed the brand with garbage products.

Mercury was part of Ford.  Ford did not take any bailout money.

I was also tempted to post the facts on  a thread the other day about Saab, when a poster stated they had 'failed.  They were forced into bankruptcy by GM as well, when they would not allow the sale to Chinese interests.

Volvo cars did move to the Chinese and is now a thriving brand again.

Ugh! You're right, it is a perfect storm.  Not to mention hiring new employees is probaly not a high priority right now.

You are in a tough situation but I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this crisis will subside as quickly as it escalated. If you can believe the reports out of China (I know, its a big if)  things seem to be stabilizing there, less than 3 months after the outbreak.

Best of luck to you.

According to the President that number is now groups of 10 or less and it will be July/August before this is over

Looks like cancelling our May cruise was the right choice.  I feel bad for my nephew though, he was getting married in April and they decided yesterday to postpone. 😞

I figured our April cruise didn't have much of a chance of happening but I thought the May one might be okay.  Not so sure now

I am optimistic that if we all actually suck it up now, keep the group size down and have a commensurate reduction in the spread and then a downturn of the virus, we can turn the corner and start the trek back to "normal" before that long.

Difficult but good choice.
