More 2020 cruise cancellations for rest of 2020: Royal just announced it today,hello NCL

Prospect for salvaging what's left for the 2020 cruise season in the Americas not looking good - definitely for Royal Caribbean as they basically tossed the towels and called it, made the announcements earlier today to their travel partners.  The entire 2020 Alaska 2020 season, cruises this Fall to/from Canada & New England, and Hawaii sailings for RCL has been cancelled.  Their T&C are different so it is not helpful to post them here - just hop over to the board for the particulars.

The words are that they are still planning to return with some ships next month in China, PRC.  That's pretty much in line with some of the opinions expressed that the cruise industry will roll out their slow recovery with ships in either Asia or Europe, or both before the Americas come back online.  

 

Wishful thinking, the Norweigian Joy is currently en route to Asia doing crew repatriation ... maybe, they can put the ship into dry dock (AGAIN) and make the necessary changes, upgrade/modifiy their HVAC and HEPA filtration system, install UVC lights and roll out more contactless & touchless technologies (good luck with the competent IT department, maybe better off outsourcing the tasks).  

 

Who is ready - seriously, LOL - to find, book and endure 15 to 20+ flights over the polar route to get to Asia for these likely short sailings.  To refresh memories, the Joy was homeport in Shanghai, China doing 3, 4 or limited 5 nights escorted shopping trips to/from Japan (Bushan or Korea was planned and subsequently eliminated).   CC diehards, let's hear it.

with the Canada government closing the cruise ports to the fall, the cruise line had to cancel all of the Canada/New England and Alaska cruises. It is disappointing that the cruise line is still accepting new booking and refusing to cancel existing bookings. The government already said they dont wait ships,so why delay canceling everything

This was an expected move. I’d say the plans the cruise lines have come out with recently are probably more of what you will see.

I am booked on the Breakaway for September 20 and it is disappointing that the cruise line has not cancelled the cruise to Canada and New England. Today I got an e-mail offering me an opportunity to bid for an upgrade to my stateroom.

At long last reality is coming through - watch out for the Carnival announcement in the next few days 

 

I believe it will be very disappointing for those desperate to cruise but time to re assess vacation if any plans

i am booked on the Encore for September 20 on a 9 day itinerary. i was hoping with it being in September it would be a safe and things will slowly return to normal. did not expect Canada to keep its border closed until the fall

I am on an Alaska cruise August 10th and it has not been canceled yet...….

Hi. Cancelling the cruise to Alaska this year (August-October) is only part of the problem.  I was just back from the NCL website and they ARE still accepting bookings for Alaska for this August.  Wonder where they will stop for their foreign port in order to satisfy the Cabotage law.   

Quite sneaky in my opinion since obviously they can't sail anymore to Alaska as the available foreign ports-Canada- are closed.

 

The  best they can do is bring the Pride of America and sail from Seattle to Alaska bypassing Canada.

Cannot do that, POA can only sail Hawaii or to and from a dry dock.

With the August Alaska cruises still for sale, they are looking more and more like thieves .   Would think it  to be illegal to be selling a product you don't have.

Mugtech, they can do that.  Pride Of America is US flagged and they can sail from US port to US port without having to stop at a foreign port.  And recent reports stated that there might be no cruising to/around/from Hawaii until next year.

You're wrong. The legislation that authorized the POA to be treated a a US flagged vessel despite not meeting all the criteria for that designation restricted the POA's itineraries solely to voyages in the Hawaiian Islands.

Incorrect.  POA is limited to Hawaiian ports.

Yesterday MSC cancelled their Sept - Oct 2020 NYC sailings to Canada.  Actually even the repo cruises to and from NYC were cancelled.

I wasnt really planning on going anywhere this year, well at least my wife wont bother me with all the cruising vacation thing anymore. At least I will be free to choose some other option for our summer vacation. Maybe go to Colorado Springs or smth, or go to Florida for a change. The beaches there are very nice.

Cole, can you help me understand.  Is this a law that limits the POA only to Hawaiian Ports?   I was thinking in terms of the cabotage law ( we have no control over Canadian ports but we have control over ours).  Just asking.  This is new to me.  Thanks!

Still nothing on the rest of 2020 as it relates to the Caribbean though, right?  I believe Carnival has their eye on some Caribbean itineraries starting up in August. 

 

Of course then there's hurricane season to consider, which as @PelicanBill has indicated, is expected to be amped up this year.  The way 2020 has been thus far, I'd expect nothing less...

For folks that sail out of home ports in the Northeast or out of the West, it is not about being doom and gloom - rather, the harsh realities ... given how this global pandemic is being spread by travelers and asymptomatic in the community; and, ports remaining closed to cruise ships, unlike cargo traffic.  Personally, I don't like it one bit as it ruined our travel & vacation plans for the 1st. half of 2020 and not helping with this Fall, our favorite season to cruise.  

 

It was/is pretty clear to us that our 5 nights Breakaway cruise to Canada/NE this Ocotober is not going to happen, regardless of whether NCL is still selling it on their website and via travel partners.  I have no desire to extend 5 nights to 20+ nights at sea for the inconvenience in the unlikely event of another suspected outbreak, mask or no mask with the best measures onboard.  

 

We should've been at GSC anchorage today (on a NCL 7 nighter) after Port Canaveral and heading to Nassau tomorrow, or at Dockyard in Bermuda ... It wasn't meant to be.

 

There are other things to worry about, besides Covid-19,  those out of work and the citywide curfew ... last night was fairly peaceful here and few, if any, looting reported locally.   Be safe & stay healthy, JHMO
