On the older vessels, I think that about 99% of passengers are either German, Austrian or Swiss ( with the vast majority being German). on the larger vessels, starting with Sfinx Class ( Lead ship AidaDiva), there seem to be ( a bit) more International passengers, but still a very much German experience . Aida is now also being promoted in The Netherlands and Belgium ( Flanders), but a large percentage of our citizens do understand German. in any case, the friendly crew all speak English, and all Safety and Operational Adresses are being broadcast in both German and English. ( Safety brief is way too long , causing loss of attention and irritation and includes unnecessary items, but I digress).

rkacruiser Posted July 11, 2020 #58 Share Posted July 11, 2020 I still wonder about the financial condition of some of the European cruise companies. If they are financially sound and have the interest in doing so, by acquiring some of the smaller, older vessels that many North Americans have enjoyed, might they consider trying to break into the North American market as MSC is trying to do? Certainly some on-board changes would have to occur, i.e. languages spoken in some cases, but I suspect that there are some--maybe many--that would be interested in sailing once again on a former Royal Viking Line vessel, or the former Statendam, or the original Royal Princess.

FYI, HAL's former Statendam, the lead ship of the "S"-class built in 1993, has already been picked up by such a European company, TransOcean Kreuzfahrten, the German brand of UK's Cruise & Maritime Voyages. Her new/current name is Vasco da Gama. C&MV / TransOcean will get the former Ryndam next year under her new name, Ida Pfeiffer Only time will tell if Maasdam and Veendam will join their former sisters in the future to complete the quartet

Not at first - too many people afraid of cruising. Once the population gets over this fear, I bet we will see higher prices, or at least fewer good sales.

My expectation is that if these sales materialize they'll just cancel the cruises as part of the next Covid-related tranche of cancellations. Between us we'd have two pair! DeeDee Groff Posted July 15, 2020 #69 Share Posted July 15, 2020 Amsterdam, Maasdam, Rotterdam, and Veendam will be taken out of service per an email I received 1.75 hours ago from HAL notifying me I will be sailing on the Zaandam on the Grand Africa Voyage from Fort Lauderdale on October 5, 2021. From today's HAL press release announcing the departure of the four ships (Maasdam, Veendam, Rotterdam & Amsterdam) Guests with bookings on future sailings of these ships will be notified that these cruises will be cancelled or changed. Along with their travel advisors, guests will receive information if the cruise will operate with a different ship or information and special offers on how to book another Holland America Line cruise when operations resume. Guests who prefer a refund will be accommodated.
