See Elaine's response. There will be resentment at "forced" excursions. If it keeps all the passengers safe, I'm all for it. If passengers must have private excursions, a resort is another vacation option.

Hi

I think the intent is not so much to keep the passengers safe but more to protect the hosting community. The concept is to allow for the possibility of contact tracing. What community, if they felt that they had the virus "under control", would want hundreds if not thousands of "strangers" wandering aimlessly possibly spreading the virus, without be able to understand exactly where they had been and who they had come in contact with. Resentment or not, these are not the cruise lines rules, they are dictated by countries and cities. If the choice is to either enforce the rules or not be allowed to sail to a given country or port, the cruise lines will enforce the rules. Somebody might get away with something, but  the bottom line is that if you are in a foreign country and break a law you may end up in prison. Doesn't sound like a good plan for a fun family vacation.

I think it to be critical on both sides, the host country and the cruise line.  A breakout could be catastrophic for either.

I agree, but a reasonable follow up question is if cancelling was given to them as a choice. If you are past final

payment and get a notice a few weeks before sailing of the new rules; and they don’t give you the option to cancel for FCC and/or a refund; they will end up with people who have no intentions of following the rules. That’s not fair to find out at the last minute that there are rules in place that would have stopped you from booking had you known. Hopefully cruise lines will give people the option when they do the final roll out.

I agree with you on this, especially the high lighted line. What I don't agree with is FCC, you should get a full refund of any monies paid. An FCC is of no use to me if I do not intend to cruise again under the new rules.

At this point, anyone who books a cruise does so at their own risk, knowing that there might be limitations.  That's common sense.  If someone has a problem with any type of limitations, they should not book the cruise or see if their deposit can be moved to a much later time.

I am sure that MSC made it perfectly clear what the rules for their shore excursion were - including signing some sort of paper before going on said excursion stating that you will follow the rules, and what the consequences would be if breaking them.  No ones fault except the family's.

That’s one thing that worries me about Carnival, they are terrible at enforcing their own rules (MDR dress code, smoking in non-designated areas including balconies, allowing passengers to save lounge chairs for hours, allowing people with Cheers to share drinks, waiting in ports for over 2 hours for people who are late returning to the ship, etc.): Carnival’s focus on having Fun at all costs and looking the other way when passengers violate their rules will be a major hurdle for them when they resume operations.

Is it all Carnival or is it the Americans who will grumble about "free country,  born free, my rights, freedom,  etc?"

I'm all for kicking folks off. But Italy and Americans are different cultures. What happens when it's multiple people/families going off tour?

My hope is that everyone breaking this rule will be denied reboarding.

I hope they all get kicked off and don't have passports and the entire event is a total nightmare for them to get home but hey that's just me...😈

I agree - this has been a growing issue for a while of no rule being the rule.

Yes, if you book a cruise now. But Carnival still has plenty of cruisers on the books who booked pre-covid.

But if they were pre-covid, then their final payment date hadn't happened yet and they could have cancelled. If someone has made final payment, they should be able to either get a refund or move their cruise to a later date.

If they were aware of the new rules beforehand, they shouldn't have gone on the sailing in the first place rather than going and breaking the rules. It's incredibly selfish of them. That said, if these will be the rules for when Carnival sails again, I just can't see myself going and will have to cancel my booking. 😞

I like to get off the ship and wander independently, but I do understand that these new rules are for passenger safety and I have no issue with it. I just personally don't want to cruise until (or if ever) we can get past that.

I'm the same. Prefer to mix with the locals. Never take cruise ship sponsored excursions. So, I'll probably have to wait until the "all clear" is sounded also.

Who is Carnival going to hire and assign onboard to Police them?

Fairly easy, start with 40 (or whatever the number is) end with 40.  If the wrong number take attendance.  These are exceptiona times that call for exceptional measures.

I take ship excursions.  I take private excursions.  But, when you've been to the same ports numerous times.....I like to wander around without excursions.  If I were limited to staying on board or a redundant ship excursion....nope.  Not gonna sail.

Easy, you are escorted off the ship in a group and you return in a group. Not in a group? Either you don't get off the ship or you are denied reboarding.

Cruising isn't for everyone and now you have one more reason.

In the interim suspending all "excursions" might not be a terrible idea. I know that some of us really enjoy exploring different activities and the Cruise lines/Excursion companies enjoy the added revenue. However this action would assist in not having to worry if anyone strays during the outings. I am not saying that remaining on the ship during port days is a viable solution but remaining near the docking site may be "suggested" to help reduce the spread.

Thoughts?

I agree with you on this point.

I say the same thing but who am I fooling... If I am required to book cruise ship excursions to be able to cruise, I will do it.  I will grumble and gnash my teeth in private - when I'm in Alaska.
