Odyssey cancelled through July 25

Recommended Posts

I did not get a letter and thanks to this web site I was able to confirm the cruise got cancelled.  I am a little disappointed that we could not move it to July 31st, as our travel agent was told their was no rooms on that sailing.  This is the third cruise we had cancelled and it is becoming pretty routine.  I agree that this will become come place.  People will be positive, even those who are vaccinated.  It in inevitable a passenger or crew member will be positive.  With the vaccine the hospitalization rate is pretty low, but people will get this virus and just go through a few days of not feeling well.  if the objective is for no positive cases we may never cruise ever again.

Either there were still infected people on the ship when it set sail from Israel (and didn't have enough virus to test positive yet), or someone brought the virus on when they arrived in FL. Did they add any crew when they got here?

Sometimes the virus takes a really long time to incubate. That is my guess as to why the long delay, they are going to quarantine everything and make 1000% sure nobody is infected.

According to the process RCI “advertised” they were going to go through when bringing crew on board, there was to be a test with negative confirmed upon arrival at boarding destination.  A two week quarantine on land prior to boarding. A negative test. Then another two week quarantine on board. Then another negative test to be released for work.  This was even before leaving Israel.

Then they have infections and dump crew in Spain. Did they quarantine and test crew again?  They arrive in the US for vaccines. Did they receive one dose of J&J or were they to receive two doses of the other? Remember that Odyssey just arrived at Port Canaveral on June 4. Were they quarantined for the “effectiveness period”?  Sounds like they weren’t.  Pretty dumb RCI!

So far, all of the cases have been in persons who were vaccinated. I think you can drop the unvaccinated part.

Going forward, there will be cases period.

Yes, I am aware that crew were vaccinated.  They either had Covid in progress before vaccination or developed Covid shortly after vaccination administered.  And yes, I am talking about future cruises where passengers will have Covid.   The point of my post -- wondering how RCI will proceed when there will be  passengers with Covid.

Never thought about this before, buy Odyssey is a terrible name for a cruise ship, isn’t it?

We need a “What would you rename Odyssey OTS ?” thread.
Might  be entertaining to read.

Hi,

Royal Caribbean is having a very difficult time entering this ship into service. They should have a party when the first paying passenger actually boards this ship.

Chuck

I'm not so sure anyone should be eager to go on that first cruise on this ship, ship is snake bitten.

I'd take the lift & shift w/ a protected price for next year and just wait it out.

How I wish we could !  It seems that casino comps are exempt from shifting.  Frankly, I was surprised that they even let us move from Indy to OY.  But I guess they decided to cut us out now.  Oh well.  Money back in my pocket.

They were really unvaccinated, because their shots hadn't taken effect yet because they didn't wait  the 14 days after the shot ..........So they went about there business and didn't stay away from the rest of the crew.............There will now be others that come down with it, just a matter of time, this isn't over yet.

I guess 1 good thing about this, all the other ships now getting  new crew will be quarantined after getting their shots, and that will be the case even if they test  clean when they first board.

Maybe we have reached a point to expect it and treat it like the flu. Quarantine, maybe in the medical ward, until clear.

First, they got the J&J, which has less effectiveness. Second, it happened before they had enough time to develop immunity after the shot. My guess is there will be more cases, which is why they are making all the crew quarantine and cancelling cruises. Just my guess...

JJ is NOT less effective if comparing apples to apples. JJ conducted tests later than Moderna/Pfizer when pandemic was in full swing with more variants and a much more diverse test population. Please stop spreading misinformation.

Same question I asked on the other thread posted on this topic: these cases were found in crew who had been vaccinated but had not completed the waiting period for full effectiveness. Why were they not quarantined until expiration of that time period?  Pretty dumb RCI!

All were quarantined.

Yes  to the shot - no to the time period for the vaccine to be effective. So they got the shot but came down with it before the vaccine had time to work.

Let’s  be honest. Odyssey was never going to sail on July 3rd. Royal never announced a test sailing and now we know why

Perhaps I am cynical but maybe they did know that the July revenue cruises weren't going to happen. Less than one percent of their crew has Covid.    Theoretically they could quarantine these crew members and hold a test cruise, and do another test well in advance of the first revenue sailing and these crew members would likely have negative swabs.  A part of me asks -- Who needs to know that 8 members were infected?  Bad vibes.  Bad press.  Seems like something else is going on and Odyssey not ready but of course can't know for sure.

Was thinking the same thing but along the lines of didn't want to deal with vax vs unvax.

I seem to recall that Pt Canaveral was doing Pfizer. But Odyssey got their first shots less than two weeks ago

So they just didn't have long enough to be effective. So sad to see the sailing postponed again.

I thought I'd read RCCl was doing J&J. Pfizer is better, but still not enough time to develop immunity. Very sad that another delay for Odyssey and Royal and cruisers. I hope all the crew is okay.

I read that some crew on various ships received pfizer and some received J&J.

Remember it was this ship that dropped off 4 or 5 covid positive cases of crew in Spain before heading to FL to get crew vaccinated.

Guess it was still onboard, worst kind of stow away

Yes, this could be.  We will know when they don't want to deal with it when the ships start leaving Florida. I wonder if they thought they were going to reach a compromise or deal to guarantee vaccinated guests and it seems like no deal in Florida.  I know this subject has been talked to death but I do hope they leave if they think it's not viable for Florida instead of advertising cruises that aren't going to happen.

I'm thinking that Royal is probably worried there will be more cases among the crew, which is why they postponed. Definitely the worst, most unwanted stowaway.

Exactly! Why did the public know about the crew with Covid that were dropped off from odyssey on trip to the US but now Royal announces cancellations and then the tell us about additional positive Covid tests on crew?

Yes, this is a possibility especially if new crew were added at the Port Everglades port. I don't know all of the details regarding who was vaccinated when and who was quarantined or not but if new crew hopping on in Fort Lauderdale could be a possibility.

And you know this how?  It does not sound like it. They weren’t vaccinated until after June 4th when they arrived in Port Canaveral. This would be within the waiting period for full vaccination if J&J and not even time for 2nd shot if Pfizer or Moderna.  If they were quarantined where did the infection originate?
