Using the Medallion worries me

What are you doing aboard ship that you need to keep secret?

Do you have window shades at home?  What are you doing there that you need to keep secret?  When you're onboard, do you prop open your cabin door so everyone passing by can see inside?  Would you mind if Princess put a camera in your cabin, recording everything you do in your cabin?  What are you doing there that you need to keep secret?

Privacy is a very individual concern and it's nobody's place to be judgmental about another's privacy matters.

The key in your statement is "when needed". I'm not doing anything they would need to look me up for anything. Why does anyone need to know where I am every second? Does anyone need to know how long I spend in the bathroom (if not in my cabin of course)? I don't like being marketed to, If I want something I'll buy it without a lot of spam or advertising materials. I don't want to carry a phone onboard. I don't usually use the internet and won't now that they have taken my free minutes away. I want a printed patter to mark with a highlighter as to what I find interesting. I don't like a dangling lanyard with a medallion hanging around my neck .

It's a personal preference to be free from tech during my cruise and do things my way as long as I don't disturb anyone elses'  enjoyment of their cruise.

This is starting to go beyond ridiculous, Every one is entitled to an opinion. If you don't agree perhaps it is best to type out your thoughts then delete them before posting. Lets all be thoughtful of other peoples feelings and just do what we all want to do CRUISE.

This is a very interesting post.  Look at post #21 here and see if post #21 is consistent at all with post #32.  Post # 21 falls squarely in the category of ridicule.  How can somebody ridicule others in one post and later pontificate that we should be thoughtful of other peoples feelings?  Very strange indeed. 😵

Tin foil may not work depending on what type of technology the Medallion uses.  A Faraday Cage is what will securely block the signal from the medallion.  If you are extremely concerned, you can put it into a Faraday bag and then keep it in your cabin safe as well.  I kept the medallion in my Faraday bag and I could see that it was working when I would stand in front of any of the displays on the ship that displays your photo when you stand in front of or pass by a display.  I was completely invisible to the Medallion system unless I wanted to be seen.  In that case, I would just remove the medallion from the Faraday pouch, use it for a purchase or re-entry to the ship and it would go right back into the pouch.  Very easy to maintain your privacy and still get the benefits of the Medallion when you wanted to use it.

Sorry, I forgot to leave a link for where you can get Faraday pouches:  Amazon.com: Faraday Key Fob Bag(2 Pack), Signal Blocking Key Fob case, RFID Key Fob Protector Pouch,Anti-Theft RFID Blocking Cage for Keyless Car Key(Carbon Fiber Fabric) : Automotive

The "regular" cruise cards have had the tracking chips in them since 2018.

I know this because we spoke to the passenger services supervisor on our cruise that year regarding the new cards -- he said all crew already had them and he said they did not demagnitize as badly as the old cards did, so he got one made up for our daughter, who seemed to demag her cruise card every day.

So card or medallion, they know where you are.    Personally, they can track me and market to me all they like. I just ignore the marketing.

If you are concerned about post cruise tracking, delete the Medallion app from your devices - no app, no data collection.

Sarcasm not ridicule, besides tinfoil hats were not directed at any particular person. Perhaps after I have made thousands of posts in a mere four years I will stop making sarcastic posts, that is my final say on the subject . Have a nice night and enjoy your cruise.

I loved the medallion and think it’s very useful when on a ship.  I wish I could implement it at work so I can find my employees when they’re outside smoking a joint instead of working..lol

DanielA, no one is talking about cameras in the room which I think we would ALL agree is way beyond too far.  I for one don't see any legitimate privacy issues that the Medallion would cause anyone.  And the potential security and safety benefits far outweigh any trivial considerations.  For instance, let's say you were there with an elderly person who might be prone to bouts of Alzheimer's or dementia or whatever and you somehow lost track of them.  Would you not want the capability of Princess to locate that person for you immediately?  I could go on with the potential benefits.

Here's the kind of thing you'd need to worry about where privacy is concerned.  Maybe 2 couples decide to cruise together and Husband A is having an affair with Wife B and maybe even books an extra cabin.  In which case perhaps they should be smarter than that.

Thank you for your thoughts on this.  I think that the OP sees legitimate privacy issues and doesn't want to use the Medallion.  That doesn't mean everyone else needs to conform to OP's sense of how much privacy they want to have.  My exaggerated point about cameras in the cabin was merely to respond to the concept that one who values some privacy isn't necessarily hiding anything as was suggested by the post I to which I was responding.

Your example about travelling with a cognitively challenged individual would be a good reason for why someone would clearly benefit from the Medallions tracking ability.  Some people just do not want to be tracked all of the time and they should be able to opt out of using the Medallion.  (And Princess gives them that opportunity.)

I'm not anti Medallion, but that said I do respect the OP's and other's privacy concerns about constant monitoring while on a ship for an extended time period.  How much time I spend in the casino or a lounge or a restroom is nobody's business but mine.

Anyone with Alzheimer's or dementia should not be on a cruise ship!

Lets be frank.  The "Medallion" has only one purpose, and that is to increase Princess' bottom line.  Its designed to enable you to make purchases and buy drinks and have them delivered to you almost anywhere on the ship.  It is NOT designed to enhance your board experience - that is all hype/marketing.  Princess would not be spending $millions to place this on their ships if the objective was not to separate you from you cash.

The privacy issue will be and is a major concern.  Its just another chip off your personal security by a corporation from which you have no idea of where your information is being used or sold to third parties.

The cruise card works perfectly for everything I need to do on a cruise ship.

I wonder, given all the time Princess has had during the downtime, whether they have plugged that security hole with the Medallions that certainly existed pre-COVID.   If you found someone's lost Medallion, say, lying in a hallway, you could walk over to any screen, flash the persons' Medallion and a few finger presses later, be shown the person's personal details, their cabin number, and even a helpful map showing you how to get there, so you could open their door and ....

IIRC, people had queried Princess and were told they (Princess) didn't consider it a problem.  Would anyone who has recently been on a Medallion ship know whether Princess has added the obvious requirement to enter a PIN # to access that particular screen?

But the cruise cards are RFID, aren't they? So you can  still be tracked while carrying it, can't you?.

Not sure, But they don’t give bartenders the info on you like a medallion does.  When you walk up to a bar and the bartender says hello to you by name it’s because he sees your picture and name on his screen.  I could care less what they track when I’m on their cruise ship.  It’s to be expected.

The medallion doesn't give the bartender the information - the ship's computer does. There's no reason it couldn't bring up the same info based on the ID on the card, which wouldn't even require RFID - it could just look it up when he scans the card. (I'm not sure if they're actually doing this, but I'll definitely ask the first bartender I see when I board on 12/11).
