Celebrity Edge's Blocks Are In The House!

Until today I had no opinion really of the MC. Seeing it now at sea, not liking it. Bet it has to grow on you but I think it makes the ship look weird on the starboard side. JUST MY OPINION. Anyone else think it looks awkward? Loving the port side look. Now that is a classy ship. We booked port side for January and I'm glad we did. Looking forward to sailing this beauty but, that MC, still not so sure I like it.

In real life the MC does protrude more than I thought it would in relation to Edge's size, but I think I will enjoy the venues on the MC and learn to appreciate it, if it works as planned. I agree that the port side is gorgeous - the Edge certainly has multiple personalities and hopefully will please a variety of people. :D

Lloyd, if you look about two struts to the right, where the next small jut out starts, there is a small rectangular structure that appears to hang from the ceiling. I thought I still saw it there recently but can’t seem to find it again. I assume it is temporary but can’t figure out what it would be for

I totally agree. It doesn't fit the upscale style of the ship—especially being orange it appears like construction scaffolding. A few predictions:

1. Before the final Edge-class ship is launched the Magic Carpets will no longer be orange. The bold color draws attention to the new feature, but in time Celebrity will want to make the ships appear less gimmicky and more upscale again. (Much like when the M-class debuted with red and yellow hull paint accents. Eventually the ships were repainted in more elegant blue and white to match Celebrity's upscale branding.)

2. Within 10 years we'll see the Magic Carpet removed. I'm guessing the maintenance on the systems to keep a platform that large operating smoothly in sea conditions will be expensive... more expensive than the revenues produced by the feature.

I'm sure I will get a lot of flack for this but to me the bow looks like a tug boat. As for the rest of the ship I think it looks great but even better if we remove the "gimmick"

Sorry. Let me try again.

This thing?

Yes...that thingy! If I recall there is another one on the other side of the ship.... If that is permanent... that cabin is not really ideal... between that and the wall of the next section.

I see what you are pointing out..no idea!

But look at post 2282 this thread...,2nd pic.....I noticed this and Vt or someone said window washer,,,looks like it does move but is unsightly and larger than the item you noticed,

The martini glass hot tubs are a couple of decks up, via elevator or a walk up a ramp, which is a serious design flaw. We like to alternate a quick dip in tge pool with a visit to the hot tub, but won’t be able to on EDGE

Not the best idea and not that easy to access..so we won't be using it except for a photo op..

I am sure the kiddies and teens will enjoy it but hope their parents stay close by to supervise.,

I saw similar structure near the aft section.... again just near the area the juts out. It appears structural... and having something to do with maintaining the ship would make sense.... but I would hate to have to look around that it it remains in place. The thingy on in post 2282 is on deck 5... so should not impact view....much. I need to check... but the thingy I am talking about might just be right above the 2282 structure. As I recall the structure I am talking about seem to line up just in front of the first and last lifeboat... or at least close to it.

Sorry I hit post too quickly... no I am wrong about where my thingy lines up... it is not consistent with lifeboats or some empty spot on deck 5. However, having something to do with window washing makes the most sense... It is under the overhang... Anyway.... if I was selecting a cabin on deck 12 I would want to know it that will be there.

Could it possibly retract back into the ceiling/floor above?

I agree with those who feel the Magic Carpet detracts from an otherwise classy-looking ship. I did not really notice until the sea trials yesterday the white-painted area below the MC. I'm either oblivious or it was not obvious. Did anybody post about this area before yesterday? I do not think this looks good at all IMO. Repaint the hull blue please! Also I could live with the MC if it was also blue or at least white. Not orange. This ship does not need a gimmick - like the crazy paintings on NCL ships.

I hope Nemanoxer doesn't mind if I post this here. He/she posted it on another thread that isn't getting as many views. It is a very interesting report:

From Nemanoxer:

A little report, taken from

A ship that bluffed the pilots

For the exit of the port, three pilots were on board, the maneuver having been previously repeated on the simulator SPSA of Nantes. The officers, who have a great habit of steamers, are bluffed by it. "It went extremely well, it's really a great ship at the technical level, comfort, reliability, it's great art," said Laurent Herpin, pilot major of the Loire station, which was in charge yesterday of the apparatus. "Compared to other ships, we did not feel like we were doing the first tests, it was as if the boat had already been out before, there was an amazing serenity on board." Equipped with two 16 MW pods and four 3.6 MW bow thrusters each, the Celebrity Edge proved to be powerful, very manoeuvrable and particularly quiet. "For the evasion, we pushed the thrusters to 70%, which allowed the passage to begin to test them. Even under these conditions, one had the impression of being stopped because one did not feel in footbridge any vibration, which is the case usually, especially as the presence of a muddy water facilitates the vibrations. The comfort is really incredible. Overall, Laurent Herpin notes that all teams on the shipyard and port services are now extremely well-honed: "The fact that Saint-Nazaire builds more and more boats makes the preparation of the tests, which are a very complex phase, is extremely well done. Previously, we had at best one ship a year. This year, we will have two, and even normally the trials of a third. Logically, the more often we go out, the more we can improve and, ultimately, everyone is better.

Until Sunday, the ship, with several hundred engineers and technicians on board, will test off Belle-Ile, especially its navigation and propulsion systems. Then the Celebrity Edge will return to the form Joubert, where it will go into dry dock to clean its hull. It should be relaunched on 18 August and return to Penhoët's wharf, where the completion of public spaces will continue. A small maneuver, with a déhalage, is planned at the beginning of September to test the Magic Carpet, located side quai. After a new series of tests, scheduled just before the fall, the Celebrity Edge will be delivered to its owner, the American company Celebrity Cruises. It will open in the United States in November.

Designed for the high-end market, the Celebrity Edge measures 306 meters long and 39 meters wide and has a gauge of 129,500 GT. It will have 1467 cabins and suites.

Under construction since the spring, its first sistership, the future Celebrity Apex (K34) will come into service in the spring of 2020. Two other units (L34 and M34) have been commissioned by the American company Celebrity Cruises, a subsidiary of the RCCL group. These boats are to be delivered by Chantiers de l'Atlantique in the fall of 2021 and in the fall of 2022. A fifth could then be added to the series.

That white/orange painted area was posted here a few months ago - I remember the discussion. It actually looks a little better to me than it did in the rendition. Luckily, that is easily remedied, if needed. :D

I think the MC will look less like an eyesore if it functions as it is supposed to and the dining venues are desirable, the bar scene at the pool works and the tendering process is more comfortable. It will be a unique experience, if all goes well. If it doesn't, they will leave them off after the first two, I imagine.

There are a few more along the side of the ship.

Look like they may retract into ceiling/floor above, but how are they used?! Horizontal maneuvering?

FINALLY caught up on this thread. I found it a few days ago and have been down the Edge rabbit hole ever since :p. How great that my catching up coincides exactly with the beginning of her sea trials.

Lloyd, I am a big fan of your work dating back to the "Quantum Keel Blocks..." days, thank you for everything you (and your sources) do! Also thank you to everyone who has contributed to this lively, entertaining and funny (punny?) thread. Communities bound together by a common interest like this are the true spirit of CC in my opinion and I'm very thankful to have it!

To throw my unsolicited two cents out there, I think that Edge is a beautiful, stately and refined-looking ship. I'm thrilled with the bow design and agree that it's a great representation of the "everything old is new again" philosophy that others have mentioned already. The MC is perhaps a little gimmicky but I for one am going into it with an open mind and happy to see the cruise line pushing for something new and innovative. It seems like a reaction to the general trend amongst the mass-market lines for "wow-factor" bells and whistles but as gimmicks go I think it's pretty reserved.

I will sailing this beautiful lady for her westbound Mediterranean/Transatlantic on Nov 1, 2019 from Rome to Ft. Lauderdale in an AQ2 - 9274. It'll represent a number of cruising firsts for me... first Celebrity cruise, first Transatlantic, first Med cruise, and first sailing longer than the typical 7/8 days!

Ah. Pointed out in the FB group that there could be a track in deck 12 balcony ceiling for cart to run along.

It's assumed that the window washers have to move down, doing a column of windows, go back to the very top, and then move horizontally to do the next column of windows.
