RDC1 Posted March 16, 2017 #26 Share Posted March 16, 2017 I wonder if these apps will be built by the same folks that have built Celebrities web site. If so someone trying to open their window will probably scuttle the ship.
Rare ORV Posted March 18, 2017 #27 Share Posted March 18, 2017 Wonder if that will require everyone to purchase the overpriced WIFI packages. The free 90 minutes for elite certainly won't be enough to use it for operating everything for a longer cruise! I wonder what demographic this would appeal to? ;)

Iamthesea Posted March 18, 2017 #29 Share Posted March 18, 2017 I thought that we would be given an iPad type device to be used in the stateroom, only. And a wrist band (like Disney has) to make charges and get into our staterooms. I am certainly not going to load an app onto my iPhone and carry it around the whole trip. I do carry it around a lot for photos, but usually not on the ship.
Rare hcat Posted March 18, 2017 #30 Share Posted March 18, 2017 I've read that they will still provide cards to those who would rather use them so no worries if you don't want to use your phone. Glad to hear that..gizmos and gadgets not needed for us, but if others want them thats fine for them In Q sine, ( on inf) the whole I pad ordering thing is a joke...our waiter showed it off as no doubt required, and then took our orders the regular way. I pad usage by pax seems to slow the order process to a stall. ..And on Connie many door cards had to be constantly re set..Hoping X can pull this off..Technology has not been its strong suit! BrendaJ Posted March 18, 2017 #31 Share Posted March 18, 2017 I read something that implied you would be able to order a drink with the app - I like the idea of that, sitting on the pool deck, typing your request into your phone and having the drink brought to your chair. Not sure how the logistics of that would work unless your server had a something that could pinpoint the device that placed the order, but it does sound interesting . . . Mynki Posted March 18, 2017 #34 Share Posted March 18, 2017 I'm surprised people think that the mobile app will be obligatory when you consider not everyone owns a smartphone or would want to use it. The seapass card will be around for years if not decades regadess of what apps the cruise companies develop.
Rare eroller Posted March 18, 2017 #35 Share Posted March 18, 2017 (edited) Here is some information regarding technology on EDGE. Check-in is being called "Frictionless Arrival" where you upload your own photo before hand and have keyless entry into your cabin using a "smart key" on you smart phone. Something else interesting is a feature called "X-Ray Vision". Read about it in the Q&A below. There will be an app called "Virtual Concierge" where you will control everything. Basically similar to what Carnival Corp. have announced with Ocean Medallion and MSC Cruises with MSC For Me. One big difference is those lines are still relying on a device you have to carry or wear, where as Royal Caribbean/Celebrity is doing away with the device and you use you're own smart phone. For those without a smartphone, don't panic. The old fashioned cruise card will still be available. Edited March 18, 2017 by eroller
Fish Lover Posted March 19, 2017 #36 Share Posted March 19, 2017 This seems all very nice if, it works consistently alternatives continue to be available, and it does not result in Celebrity cutting what is already overworked staff I, for one, have no intention whatever of taking my phone on the ship, let alone carrying it around with me and downloading an application to it. I also have serious issues regarding facial recognition and uploading facial images for that purpose. I have no problem picking up the phone and dialing room service for reservations. I also have no problem adjusting the thermostat, or doing so from the television. There already is a noticeable shortage of bar tenders in the theater, the pool area, and casino. I should not have to order a drink on a device to get service. The servers should circulate and notice me if I indicate my interest in ordering a drink. Why on earth would I want to peek behind the walls at the anchor, engine room or bridge. The bridge (or certainly should be) a highly secure place. Why would you allow people even close enough to peek behind the walls?
Rare Host Jazzbeau Posted March 19, 2017 #37 Share Posted March 19, 2017 There already is a noticeable shortage of bar tenders in the theater, the pool area, and casino. I should not have to order a drink on a device to get service. The servers should circulate and notice me if I indicate my interest in ordering a drink. Under the present system, you have to get the server's attention to place your order, then the server goes away and orders it, then later picks it up, and finally brings it to you. By ordering on your phone, the bartender prepares the drink immediately and the next available server brings it to you directly. Sounds like it would cut the time in half with the same number of servers. [As to your other point that this may be a pretext to cut the serving staff, I know nothing -- but neither you nor I are going to change that decision.]

dkjretired Posted March 19, 2017 #39 Share Posted March 19, 2017 Are there going to be charges for using the phone to open the door. I'm not crazy about it, when I go on a cruise, my phone gets turned off and put in the safe, that's the way I like it.

Just put it in airplane mode but turn on wifi and connect to the onboard network. I'm guessing the onboard network will be enhanced as well. Of course no one is forcing you to use it. You can always opt to use the traditional cruise card. Sent from my iPhone using Forums
westdennis Posted March 19, 2017 #41 Share Posted March 19, 2017 If the new Celebrity App is like the website, my phone will probably open my neighbor's door and control the temperature in the MDR. Rare hcat Posted March 19, 2017 #42 Share Posted March 19, 2017 All this but still a dysfunctional website! On Connie, the key cards failed regularly...folks could not exit at ports when they failed..Hope this works better. We will stick with as few of the hi tech stuff as we can. Dh just walks over the the pool bar and orders drinks,,. He does not need an App for that!

Hi Don, 2 points........I recently read a really good review but cannot remember the screen name of the person who wrote it:eek: but they said they do not bring any electronics with them while cruising at all. The other item is I still only use a flip phone. So I will not be using anything electronically other than the key card to get in and out of my cabin. I bring the phone with me and as you stated, mine stays in the cabin the entire cruise too. So they better offer the "regular card" to those of us who want it that way. And I want to make sure you saw my congrats to you about the suite on your upcoming cruise and a Very Happy Anniversary to both of you:D

ClaudiaB Posted March 20, 2017 #47 Share Posted March 20, 2017 I hope this new idea works well because it intrigues me and I would love to use it. I don't understand technology nearly as much as other people do - I'm 63 and basically learned what I know by just jumping in. I wish I was better, but I'm getting there. I love my Mac Air, my iPad, my iPhone and I take my phone everywhere with me on the ship. Why? It's got a great camera. We get unlimited internet (either free or purchased) and I can see how my 95 year old dad is or check on my house or baby grandkids. We don't make or receive calls, but we couldn't cruise if my DH couldn't check in on his company. I take my e-reader around the ship, or my iPad. Love it all! I for one don't want to go back in time to curly-cord phones or desk top only computers, or flip phones or cars with keys. I love this age we live in, so many new things. I hope it works on the ship they way they want it to. I can't wait to try it all. I understand that there will be some who want to use the key card. Sounds like that is just fine, but honestly pretty soon I imagine all phones will be smart phones, don't you? Even my 95 year old dad uses one, along with an iPad. Still has that desk top all-in-one which he loves. But...95 y'all! I have a cross-body very small iphone-sized snap "purse" that I use to carry my iPhone and my sea pass card in. It's tiny tiny, just the size of the phone, and weighs nothing. I keep the sea pass card in an RFID sleeve so it won't be de-activated by the cell phone. I'd sure love to 'lose' that card and just use the phone. Nothing in my hand as I go about the day on the ship. Not in my way, and it's always there when I want to take a picture of the final piece in the hot glass show or check email when I'm waiting for the show to start in the theatre. Sure would be great to sit there and order a mai tai!!

The staff is already minimized to the point that they become ineffective. Reducing their numbers further due to anticipated reductions would be unacceptable. It also should not be an exception to decline using one's phone. Best efforts to maintain service levels without the phone ap should be expected.
