flviking Posted August 27, 2017 #151 Share Posted August 27, 2017 Yet, Liberty is heading there at 11 knots. Per CNN: Passengers aboard the Carnival Freedom told CNN they were worried about their vehicles, which were left at Galveston's port. The company [Carnival] said passengers will be able to disembark at New Orleans, but warned against returning to Galveston for now. "However, given the severity and projected path of the storm along with potential challenges guests may encounter attempting to travel back to Galveston independently, we are strongly encouraging them to remain on board as we intend to return the ships to Galveston as soon as feasible," Carnival said. As Carnival warns against returning to Galveston Royal has a very different opinion on whether passengers should head to Galveston right now. There were a number of PR disasters in Carnivals past with ship issues and weather. They seem to have learned their lesson. Royal now has at least three recent run-ins with hurricanes and doesn't seem to have learned. PS This just in - Royal has outsourced customer relations to United Airlines. Big_G Posted August 27, 2017 #152 Share Posted August 27, 2017 I'm sure the ship is rocking and rolling being so close to port. Not according to this report. We (Liberty) are offshore outside the port waiting for them to clear us in. The port was doing an inspection this morning at 6:00AM and our ability to dock is being discussed on a conference call at 9:00AM. Here are the conditions we're in. It looks worse than it is the ship has remained incredibly smooth. They told us to put our luggage out last night and then told us to bring it back in. Assuming we dock today anyone who wants to can use the ship as a hotel for Sunday night. They expect to sail a shortened cruise departing Monday afternoon. People with RCI air/transfers have to stay on the ship tonight becaue no motorcoaches are available as they are being used by emergency services. Good times. Biker19 Posted August 27, 2017 #153 Share Posted August 27, 2017 The ship should be getting within view of land now and probably within cell range.
Rare BecciBoo Posted August 27, 2017 #154 Share Posted August 27, 2017 Not sure what to make of it but a pilot boat that looked to be headed towards Liberty returned to port. Liberty still headed to Galveston at 10 knots. Apparently they are waiting on Liberty I'm watching Marine Traffic too. Wish Carla would give us an update. mediccruzin Posted August 27, 2017 #155 Share Posted August 27, 2017 Per CNN: PS This just in - Royal has outsourced customer relations to United Airlines. Ok must be my fire/ems humor but I had a good chuckle over that after a long night of water rescues. Thanks for the laugh.

Spurschick Posted August 27, 2017 #157 Share Posted August 27, 2017 i am expecting from the update above most people are staying onboard if you make it in today. Even if you make it in there may well not be the staff shoreside to disembark.
ATC cruiser Posted August 27, 2017 #158 Share Posted August 27, 2017 The ship will run out of food for the passengers and crew On the last scheduled day of the cruise. Whenever we cruise we park out car, full of gas and ready to head home, at the port. If I were on the Liberty, I would want to be unloaded where my car is parked. rkd1 Posted August 27, 2017 #159 Share Posted August 27, 2017 We are rocking a little, but nothing too bad. I'm a loyal Royal cruiser, but the way they handled this is ridiculous. Hopefully we can stay on as long as needed. My thoughts are for people coming down, because no one had the smarts to know this was gonna be bad. Although news has had it on for almost a week. All captain could talk about was how we would have you at the port on time. Whoopee

If that's what you do for your career and the apparent situation you're in I'm glad you got a laugh. I fear your long night of water rescues may continue for a few more nights. Be safe! juliang Posted August 27, 2017 #162 Share Posted August 27, 2017 There is nothing in the news or on the internet posted by carnival or RCI this am about what they are going to do with all those people, on the cruises, or supposed to come in for a cruise. The devastation in Galveston and Houston is immense, the flooding is immense, so how can people get safely out , or in ???? very , very poor reflection on the cruise lines
SelectSys Posted August 27, 2017 Author #163 Share Posted August 27, 2017 If you're on Liberty and need to drive east on I-10 to get home, it's under water at Uvalde. To be fair, the weather in Galveston proper isn't that bad, but the second you leave the island, you're heading for trouble. And all the flights into and out of the airports are closed. I am now thinking the cruise for week after next (8/3) will be impacted as well.
kathy49 Posted August 27, 2017 #164 Share Posted August 27, 2017 they may be back "on time" but then what. Port info says all roads are flooded so parking lot okay but road not...so then what tomorrow? Not sure RCL is doing anything other than trying to avoid having to cancel or refund part of the next cruise...ie...looking after their bottom line. Getting to port on time is not badge of honor here at all.
sjalex20 Posted August 27, 2017 #165 Share Posted August 27, 2017 This may already be posted as I haven't looked through the threads. Letter we received this morning. Captain just gave an update at 10:11a that we are 8 miles from port but it is still closed. He was hoping they would make an exception for us and let us in. He is on another conference call. travelbuddies Posted August 27, 2017 #166 Share Posted August 27, 2017 RCCL WEBSITE ITINERARY UPDATES August 26, 2017 Due to Tropical Storm Harvey and weather conditions around the Galveston/Houston area, as well as the port's current closure, Liberty of the Seas will arrive to the Port of Galveston tomorrow later than originally scheduled. Because of this, boarding for the next cruise will now take place on Monday, August 28 between noon and 3 p.m. We ask that guests not arrive to the port before noon. While carnival is not really close to port but appears there guests may be enjoying another sea day with everything open. Just a guess who knows. roswellcruiser Posted August 27, 2017 #169 Share Posted August 27, 2017 With roads closed because of flooding and flights cancelled and/or airport closed travel is next to impossible. What are the cruisers going to do when they arrive in Galveston? Royal should take them to a safe port and transport home. Expensive yes, but lots of good will that will in the end benefit Royal. Airlines could waive change fees and assist with getting everyone home.

Plum Happy Posted August 27, 2017 #174 Share Posted August 27, 2017 (edited) Wow, some people here are overly dramatic. Some of you are acting crazy. You have no idea what other contingeny plans that they are making. Why announce them until they are in place? No one on the ship is going hungry. If they have to charter planes & buses to get them to certain destinations, that takes time as well. They are working this, not you behind a keyboard playing "I know what is best" and they don't know what they are doing. Sacrificing passenger safety ( again aka Anthem ) for money makes you wonder....:mad: I started to wonder when RCI was calling people asking for final payment before it was due with the reward of a few $ of OBC! From what I can tell of this event RCI was trying not to have to pay a penny to any passenger for anything. It didn't work!
