Jeans. In Specialy Restaurants

I have a dear friend who would love to dress up on Gala Nights but her husband refuses to wear a jacket or a tie ....... he uses the old line "I wore them my whole working life, why would I wear one now?". I always used to reply "Because it would make your wife HAPPY".

They either get it or they don't.

Obviously many of them do not "get it"; and cruise lines, for better or worse, have gotten out of the business of helping people "get it".

I dress - my husband dresses - we enjoy it -- we don't care if you don't get it or enjoy it or make an effort - you can eat in the lido - or because the do not enforce a dress code any more you can come any way you want - I do believe there is some disrespect in not complying but not let that get to my vacation

Don't pay too much attention to the ancillary comments on this page. Don't know if you care whether your husband wears jeans or not. Nor is it any of my business.

Bottom line. Jeans OK in buffet and optional dining venue on formal nights. MDR asks for casual but no jeans on formal nights. but this is enforced in such a haphazzard way that who is really to know what HAL recommends or wants since they appear not to care. All other nights jeans are fine in any venue.

We don't care if you wear jeans on formal night. It has no impact whatsoever on our enjoyment of the dinner or the cruise. Nor does it give any indication of how your husband feels toward you (why on earth should it) or respects you.

Where we live, pressing jeans, formal or otherwise, went out of style not long after bell bottoms.

We are going on a three day cruise and there are NO GALA nights.

I am not new to this board and have sailed HAL many times. I asked a question and don’t appreciate the snarky comments about my husband. We have always dressed according to code, but this is a different cruise.

That’s all from me.

Actually, It is my impressionn Gala Night applies to the whole ship but for Lido.

No?

No, you are not correct. According to Holland's website:

Gala Nights evoke the grand traditions of cruising as guests dress to impress for special events on board, including our five-course gourmet dinner in the Dining Room. For gentlemen, collared shirts and slacks are required in all fine dining restaurants.

Therefore, if someone chooses to dress in something other than Gala attire they are welcome in all venues other than the MDR. This includes the showroom, casino, movie theater, lido etc.

And the guest is welcome to wear jeans, except in the MDR on Gala night.

Q: Are jeans allowed?

A: Jeans without holes, tears or embroidery are welcome on most evenings in all restaurants, but on Gala Nights jeans are only allowed in the casual dining restaurants.

It's gets a bit frustrating on CC when posters impose their wishes of what the rules "should be" as opposed to what they actually are.

For my 2 cents worth.....jeans are jeans. Dress jeans, casual jeans, faded jeans, ripped jeans, they are still jeans. Personally, I prefer to sit near people who look like they have dressed for dinner. So consider the folks around you

and not just yourselves when it comes to dressing for dinner. Would you wear jeans to a fine landlocked restaurant?

My humble opinion and I know others totally disagree with me but what's the harm of looking decent for fellow passengers?

How dare you. My husband is a fabulous man. We’ve been married for 59 years. You have no idea what you’re talking about and are very rude.

I'm so glad you called out the person who made that comment. Unfortunately, there are some on this board who see any views other than their own as a matter of 'disrespect'. They don't seem to "get it" that they are the ones who are disrespectful of others.

My humble opinion: I see no need to dress in a fashion to please others.

I tend to agree with you. As long as people wear clothes that are clean and not ripped, then I could care less. Their jeans do not impact my enjoyment of my meal or my dining experience as a whole....even if they are sitting at a table close by. And, people need to accept that even in very fine dining establishments, people are still wearing jeans to dinner. The times they are a' changing and it's better to accept it than fight it. Dress how you please and please don't judge.

You wouldn't see people wearing jeans in fine dining establishments in London.

If you can't accept negative comments/criticism with the positive, then don't post on a public forum as you're not always going to get what you want to hear. C'est la vie.

On our recent trans-Atlantic from Southampton to the U.S., there were only 300 Americans on board. It was nice to see the change in atmosphere in a number of ways: lots of political discussions with well-reasoned positions, but without the anger and rancor one often finds between Americans with differing opinions, and better dress in general, which gave a nicer atmosphere.

Please explain why it is all right to wear jeans, but not ripped jeans? Either what people wear does impact your enjoyment of your meal or it does not.

It appears that you are still judging - but just on a slightly different standard than that applied by others.

Carol, I am very sorry you were sujected to such negativity. You don't deserve it and I think it unwarranted.

Please have your DH pack his jeans, his shirrts and wear what he wishes. I know you both will lookbetter than fine. Have a wonderful cruise and enjoy some lovely dinners on board.

I had looked forward to some nice Pinnacle dinners and it was a big disappointment for me when our Pinnacle experience was so bad I know yours HAS to be better. :)

We will all look forward to hearing ab out your fun cruise when you return.

Dear Mamaofomi,

First, congratulations on being married 59 years, that is wonderful.

Second, trust your judgment, and ignore the ridiculous comments that

may appear upsetting. Internet forums are great, but unfortunately there are a lot of clowns who intentionally try to create mischief and provoke emotional responses.

Jeans are like values, they are relative to time and place.

Your husband will enjoy being comfortable while dining, no one will object and you will both be happy.

enjoy your cruise

Probably because most people would associate ripped jeans with being totally inappropriate to go out to dinner. I personally would not care and no it would not impact my dining experience, however, I mentioned this because I doubt if they would be allowed entrance into the dining room, but whatever is fine with me...I am NOT judging. Really, no need to be so snarky with your reply. Happy Holidays.

Many cities, including here in Toronto and in New York City along with lots of European cities accept jeans in any and all restaurants, including very expensive, fine dining restaurants.

What I don't understand is why do some get so upset at what kind of pants others wear and yet they don't get upset about those who are crawling around on the floor looking under tables to see what others are wearing.
Thank you! Well said, RocketMan!
