A lot of hotels advertise "free internet" but some of them are almost as bad as on the ship. VOOM = internet in general, not "good" internet. I don't know...we've used Voom Stream & Surf on multiple ships, and found it both fast & reliable...including Facetime video streaming, Office 360 (even via VPN) email, texting, and other applications. The last Royal Caribbean non-Voom Internet we used was a couple years ago...and it resembled a "2 tin cans and a string" user experience. Having worked in the tech field for a long time, I've learned that the cost of supporting more than one platform exponentially raised the operating expenses...so hopefully RCI wakes up and smells the roses of one Voom platform (and user experience) on all their ships. The world now sees onboard Internet as an expectation, not a "nice to have if possible" service on cruise ships. I assume the bean counters have done the math and the on going BW costs well outweighs the initial and on going maintenance cost of the equipment on board. Plus, they might be waiting for Musk or someone else (http://www.oneweb.world/) to come up with a better/cheaper solution.

That last point might actually be the underlying factor...especially since other cruise lines have alternative platforms and competition renders good things most of the time. As for bean counter assumptions...yes...the most likely did an initial cost vs revenue assessment. Now that the platform has been operating for a while, the updated data might point them in several directions...so 2019 could prove to be an interesting year as the multiple ships dry-docks occur. Rare twangster Posted February 22, 2019 #429 Share Posted February 22, 2019 RCCL just re-inked a multi-year contract with Speedcast last year. If change was coming you would think it would be written into that contract. The other perspective is the O3b constellation. Four more birds were placed into service last May taking the constellation from 12 to 16. It could be a capacity issue with O3b. Carnival Horizon launched with O3b but was observed months later using geosynchronous in the Caribbean. "Built by Thales Alenia Space, the four new O3b satellites will enable SES to bring more capacity, enhanced coverage and increased performance to market." Royal's problem with O3b is that it went to 3 times the cost as it was when they promised it on all ships.

bilyclub Posted February 23, 2019 #437 Share Posted February 23, 2019 Has anybody figured out how many cabins have actually been added since the Nav left Turku in 2002 ? Also, how much the passenger capacity has gone up ?

nolimits Posted February 24, 2019 #443 Share Posted February 24, 2019 Sitting on beach in Fll cruise canceled had none refundable flts so doing land based for week . Reading this mks me wonder how close were they to completion. If ship is arriving tomorrow and doing press cruise tues. They should of offered those couple days instead of future cruise credits
Rare twangster Posted February 24, 2019 #444 Share Posted February 24, 2019 (edited) A ship full of press is more valuable than appeasing a few thousand. The press reach millions. A few thousand disgruntled guests who will still quip about what should have been has little return value in comparison. Royal is a business. Nothing more, nothing less. We've been on its sister Adventure 3 times...so seeing all that is new will be a treat.

CazV Posted February 25, 2019 #448 Share Posted February 25, 2019 She has arrived into Terminal A at Miami at approx 6.30am this morning. Can't get a decent screenshot from the webcam at the moment. She's due to move to Terminal G later today, so may need to wait till then to see her properly. 1

I hope all those sailing next week and beyond are not disappointed.
