EDGE April 13th Sailing Review

Just off the Edge; overall an enjoyable cruise and a beautiful ship, but definitely encountered various issues (some fairly significant) and for the prices Celebrity is charging for suites now, the value is not there. Will break my comments into a few different categories:

*Embarkation/Debarkation:

Terminal 25 was designed specially for the Edge and for those in suites it is the easiest and best experience for checking in; nice private lounge with refreshments while you wait for boarding to begin. No lines; a staff member comes over to you and checks you in while you are seated. Boarding started at 10:30; only negative was no ship map was provided and no escort or guidance to the Retreat Lounge; the ship lay-out is a bit difficult to navigate at first (some dead ends), but we eventually found the Lounge and after a day or so the ship is easy to navigate. Debarkation was also a breeze. We stayed on the ship until close to 9:00am as we were staying over in Miami for a night (flights much cheaper Monday than Sunday and we prefer Miami to Ft. Lauderdale - was just about a $33 Lyft ride port-to-hotel. For those interested in fine dining and willing to splurge, had an amazing meal to end our vacation at Alter; recommend booking the chef's counter (two seats on a counter overlooking the kitchen) and arriving early for a cocktail in their beautiful outdoor patio).

*Suite:

We stayed in 12152; one of the uppermost S3's at the end of the Magic Carpet track. Unlike the end S3's on lower decks there is no window on the balcony, so the views are a bit obstructed when looking forward (as the Magic Carpet track juts out significantly further than the balcony). When the Magic Carpet is one deck up (it is there a fair amount of time) the view is significantly obstructed by the floor of the Carpet as well as the spikes. Another issue involved the noise from the pool deck; when bands were playing there it was noisy inside the suites even with the balcony door shut. If the S3's were significantly less $$ than an S2 I would book one again, but on a lower deck (for more quiet and less of an obstructed view). The Magic Carpet itself was fun to watch as it moved; it made a bit of noise, but nothing crazy and only moved a few times per/day. The interior of the suite was nice with a very large bathroom and shower. There was plenty of storage (with the only issue being the closet doors are very close to the edge of the bed, making it a bit awkward to use). Our butler (Allain) was super attentive and personable; among the best we have had (interestingly the best service we have received from butlers have been in Sky Suites and not when the two occasions we were in the Penthouse). Out room attendant (I think his name was Than or Phan) was also excellent.

*Suite Amenities:

One reason we were excited for Edge was to try out the new Retreat Lounge, Retreat Pool Deck and the first Luminae built from scratch (and not just space carved out of the main dining room). Unfortunately these amenities did not live up to expectations; most of the issues are fixable if Celebrity also feels they are worthy of correction.

-Retreat Lounge: On the positive side the Retreat Lounge is beautiful and the space itself dramatically nicer than Michael's Club in M-Class and S-Class ships; bright, roomy, comfortable furniture and several floor to ceiling windows with amazing views. A main negative involved the cheap, poor quality wines available. On both Summit and Infinity the bartenders and/or concierge were most accommodating in obtaining a bottle of wine or spirit (or even sake) of one's choosing upon request, provided it was nothing outrageously expensive. During a chat with one of the concierges (the Retreat has three of them) I requested a bottle of a wine we enjoy that was served by-the-glass in the Fine Cut Steakhouse (and was within the price-point of the premium package). I was told she would look into it; she never got back to me but the next night when I inquired with a bartender I was told they do not do that and I could buy a bottle and have my butler bring it up to the retreat to be stored for when I wanted to consume it. Another negative involves the large number of suites on the Edge; service was not nearly as personable as on Summit and Infinity; whereas on S-Class I have been made to feel valued when sailing in a Sky Suite, on Edge I felt like I was just a number. Service was quite poor (at least from Cali, the concierge we generally used). For example we were among the first to board; we went directly to the Retreat Lounge and requested to book the Dinner on the Edge (only offered once per/cruise and held on the Magic Carpet). Cali said she would book this for us when it became available, but that the date had not yet been confirmed for the dinner. We checked in with her three additional times during the next few days; each time she stated she was still working on it until the final time she said she had not been able to get us a booking and the dinner was full - when we pushed her on this she gave lame excuses, did not take any responsibility for clearly dropping the ball and made no attempts to make things right.

-Suite Pool: A very nice space; definitely needs more shaded areas though (the only shaded areas are down hallways away from any action or views). What struck me as nickel-and-diming was the drinks at the suite pool bar were not included, not even bottled water. We had a premium package, so was not a huge deal, but just felt cheap when in the pool and ordering a water to have to exit the pool to fetch one's seapass card to give to the server. Ridiculous at these prices.

-Luminae: Beautiful, comfortable dining room, but because Edge has so many suites is massive and has no intimacy. Celebrity is also marketing more to families and there were a few with infants and toddlers in suites; some well behaved but a couple families had fussy young children and let the children run around the vicinity of their table and/or cry without intervening (including a couple that wore shorts and flip-flops on evening chic night and staff did nothing). Luminae also was understaffed for the size; service was friendly, but staff had to take care of too many tables to provide the personable, high level of service one would expect at what is supposed to be higher level of dining than the MDR. Our sommerlier (Carlos) was excellent; but had so many tables to care for (there are only two sommeliers in Luminae) he often was very busy. Likewise assistant waiters were stretched thin; one night my wife's water glass sat empty for over ten minutes before we were able to flag someone down. Food quality was quite variable; pastas (made fresh on board) tended to be the best. A big positive was Celebrity now offers a handful of truly premium wines by the glass for those willing to pay the overage; I greatly enjoyed being able to have glasses of Caymus and Grgich Hills with my meals. Another positive was Celebrity did not falsely describe items on the menu as being luxury ingredients (i.e. nothing was falsely labeled Kobe beef, morel mushrooms, etc. - the only mislabeled item was a soup that was described as having caviar that had tobiko instead).

Specialty Dining:

-Fine Cut Steakhouse: We had two very good dinners at Fine Cut Steakhouse. While Celebrity during past cruises has had a knack of overcooking proteins, both our steaks (Tomahawk one night and Dry Aged NY Strip the other) were cooked to a proper medium rare. While many people speak about food being subjective, it is taste that is subjective - ingredient quality and execution is largely objective and I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the steaks (much better than at Tuscan Grille). The sides and appetizers were fine, but nothing excellent. The only negative was the music from Grand Plaza (below) at times was extremely loud and made the dining room quite noisy for a period of time. Reservations here were very scarce; was told that 85% of the capacity had been booked online prior to the cruise; most people with dining packages were out-of-luck (Cali did do well getting us reservations here, so at least she did come through on one request we made upon boarding).

-Eden: Fun experience, but disappointing food quality. While sea urchin is one of my favorite foods, it is something that has to be fresh. Had to swish water around in my mouth for a while to get the foul taste out of my mouth. While this was the worst course, nothing was memorable and only two of the courses were good quality (again am not talking taste, but ingredient quality and execution). As is often the case, when Celebrity tries to act too gourmet, they tend to fail. Overall Celebrity does a very good job with the food considering the constraints (being at sea, feeding large numbers of people, minimal locally sourced or seasonal ingredients, chefs executing a corporate menu rather than cooking to their strengths or passion, limited budget etc.) but for people who are used to fine dining at high quality land based venues, Eden falls WAY short. Fortunately the meal itself was kind of entertaining and there is a great vibe, so we still had a decent time despite disappointing food.

Other Dining:

We did not do any of the other pay restaurants (did not seem to be good value to us) but did eat a lot at the Spa Cafe and had good experiences there. Had smoothies or fresh juice there most days as well as often a light breakfast or lunch there; we both particularly enjoyed the detox smoothie (smoothies and juices incur a charge, but were covered by our Premium Beverage Package - not sure if Classic covers them). The Eden Cafe also had very good lunches (am hoping it remains included) though the staff needed more training. One day while waiting in line a customer (who had wandered away with a sandwich for a few minutes) came back, handed the sandwich back (that she had clearly handled) and informed staff it was not what she ordered. My wife placed her order a minute later and happened to order the same sandwich the woman had returned moments earlier; the staff member not only handed my wife this "used" sandwich but was a bit snippy when my wife called him out and said another passenger already had walked away with it and later returned it. That same meal I noticed hair in my food. We did report this to a Retreat Lounge concierge and received a nice follow-up call from the dining manager of that area apologizing. While that meal grossed us out a bit, we did return a couple days later and had a great lunch. They make fresh coffees there too (kind of like an outpost of Cafe al Bacio with Americanos, Lattes etc, just not fancy coffees). Hit the buffet a couple times for snacks and breakfast and the baker on board was excellent; great quality breads for a cruise ship. Nice variety at the buffet, but as is the case with most buffets, quantity-over-quality for the most part. The gelato and  ice cream (made fresh on board) are now at a single spot; regular and soft-serve ice cream still free and about 2-3 gelato flavors for a surcharge (stick with the ice cream - gelato needs to be maintained at a lower temperature to retain it's quality and it was being stored at the same temp as the ice cream).

Entertainment:

Early reports on Edge complained about this, but Celebrity appears to have already made significant corrections. There were plenty of the typical Celebrity activities (movies, live music, trivia, a new take on Bingo - a riff on the TV game show Deal or No Deal etc) and also some activities unique to the Edge such as a laser maze. I enjoyed the two shows I attended (the Eden show and a Hot Summer Night Dream in the main theater. The Eden space itself is stunning and very comfortable; the bartenders there were super friendly and definitely the best quality cocktails on the ship (though I do wish Celebrity would stock some higher end whiskeys and gins for those willing to pay a few bucks upcharge for better spirits). The new theater is also very nice with comfortable seats. We tried to watch a movie in the Rooftop Garden; while the screen had really good quality image (despite it being sunny out) and good quality sound, unfortunately there is no shade so we quickly became extremely hot and many of the large planters obstruct the view of the movie screen. The gym is also excellent; best gym I have seen at sea (and better than many land gyms I have been to).

Ports:

For Key West we wandered around on our own, had an excellent seafood lunch at Louie's Backyard (great fresh seafood and wonderful ocean views - highly recommend) as well as got some frozen chocolate key lime on a stick at Kermits.

https://www.louiesbackyard.com/

At the Cayman Islands we did a snorkel and a swim with the stingrays through Captain Marvins. Extremely well run and excellent guides and value; also highly recommend. Was my fourth time trying to do this excursion; my first three visits to Grand Cayman the waves were too large and stingray city was closed.

https://www.captainmarvins.com/

In Cozumel we did a food tour with Cozumel Chef where in a small group of six a guide took us to six different authentic Mexican venues away from the tourist areas. Had done this tour way back in 2012 and loved it and this time it was as good as ever. High, highly, highly recommend!

https://www.cozumelchef.com/

In Costa Maya we elected to stay on the ship; my wife was a bit sunburned at this point and we made use of the solarium and other areas of the ship that were far less crowded than during sea days.

Casino:

Wasn't planning on partaking, but ended up with $255 in nonrefundable OBC at the end of the cruise (had been planning on using it for Dinner on the Edge and on overages on wine - but for some reason we were not charged the overage in Luminae - which helped make up for the nickel-and-diming in the Retreat Lounge and Suite Pool). Wound up managing to turn it into $480 at the Blackjack table. For those interested the minimum tables were $10 for single deck and $15 for multi-deck.

Summary:

Edge is a beautiful ship and very promising but for Suite Class they need to make a lot of substantial changes or drastically lower the prices as the value is quite poor if one is paying the current going rate for what one receives. Fortunately nearly all the negatives we encountered are fixable and because we did book early and had a good rate there were enough positives that we overall had an enjoyable vacation. However my next few trips will be land trips; I will be watching how Celebrity evolves over the coming several months before I commit to another cruise.

Thanks for the great review! I was sad to hear that the Retreat concierges didn't make the grade. I was concerned that with 146 sky suites, the concierges would not get to know us and the personal touch would be lost. We were lucky to deal with Joao on our Nov, Dec and Jan cruises. He was very personable and asked every single day if everything was okay and went out of his way to make sure our requests were met. Hopefully the newer ones will improve over time. I am also very surprised that they wouldn't stock a requested wine in the Retreat. I'm glad you mentioned it here since they are likely reading this - if they are still getting people beverages of choice within reason on other ships' MC or Retreat Lounge, they should be doing it on the Edge (especially since the suites are more expensive).

I agree with the charges at the pool bar. Those who don't have a package on the TAs (or other cruises without Go Best) are going to be unhappy when they have to pay for drinks, with the prices they are charging for suites. I just don't understand their reasoning and they had a hard time defending it - they did say that it was still under discussion.

I wouldn't choose a deck 12 S3 either, but would be fine with those on deck 8-10 (wouldn't choose deck 6-7 because of the time that the MC is on deck 5). They have large balconies with pretty good views, all the suite benefits and are about $600 total cheaper than the S2's now (at least on some cruises).

Glad you enjoyed your cruise, despite some issues.

We were recently on the Summit and found the very same to be true about the Suite Class.  Promising but didn't hit the mark.  I don't think it was worth the extra money this time and should have just booked an Aft C1.  I just hope they don't do the same with the SClass.

We were on the March 31st cruise in a Sky Suite and had a different experience.  First, Cali did a fantastic job of arranging a special Carrot Cake prepared and presented at Luminae. We were traveling with another couple and he was celebrating his 55 birthday and Cali organized getting a full carrot cake(his favorite) and having it for his birthday.  I also had Carlos in Luminae present and serve a bottle of wine from my cellar that I brought on specifically for his birthday.  We had excellent service from Carlos as well as the entire wait staff in Luminae.

In the retreat lounge, we had Dominic supply us a bottle of Blanton's whiskey and I even had him deliver this bottle to the Sunset bar one night, so that we could enjoy it one evening with a Cigar. I did tip him of course for this service.

And, we loved the quiet pool area and had excellent service from Dominic sometimes and a young lady(forget her name) that were almost always there to serve us drinks.  And, it was nice to be able to enjoy lunch right in the pool area.

If and when we return to the Edge or Apex, we will get,at least, a Sky Suite more forward than aft or even mid-ship to really enjoy the Retreat area.  We were in a Sky Suite,  a few cabins aft of the aft elevators and I would definitely move forward on a future cruise.  Also, the aft elevators on the Edge are way busier than the forward ones.

I have heard so many complaints about Cali here on CC, can’t believe she hasn’t gotten poor reviews onboard. Hopefully she will improve or move on to another post. She’s clearly not a good fit for Concierge.

I’m not sure it’s entirely appropriate to call out individuals by name so negatively and so loudly on a public forum. “The Retreat Concierge” would have sufficed.

Also, Dinner on the Edge is offered only once per cruise and seating is extremely limited. If the Concierge gave priority to the higher category suites, Zeniths, etc. than in the eyes of Celebrity she probably did a great job.

Thank you, Gonzo70, for such a thorough review!

We are on Edge 15 May (Iberian Peninsula) and are SO looking forward to the premium wines by the glass!  When Luminae first opened the Sommelier was willing to offer high quality wines by the glass then the quality fell off with our next few sailings...  So happy to learn it's back and I'm more than happy to pay the overage.  Cheers!

Calling her out by name was something I thought long and hard about and did not take lightly (and have rarely if ever done so in the past). I would not have done this if it had been a one-off or something minor. However she failed to come through on multiple requests and in addition had terrible follow-up; when we would approach her she would make lame excuses, never took responsibility, never tried to rectify mistakes she made and never attempted to make things right. I also heard negative stories about her from another suite guest I met onboard, so her issues appeared to be widespread and not isolated. I felt her incompetence and poor attitude were significant enough that I would be derelict in not warning other members of the Cruise Critic community to avoid her and make use of other Concierges.

Regarding the Dinner on the Edge, it was not that the dinner was filled with higher suites and Zeniths; it was that Cali dropped the ball. My wife was really upset about that as we were among the first few people to board the ship and went directly to the Retreat Lounge to book this (as a friend on the sailing the week before had really enjoyed the dinner and advised my wife to do this right away). My wife would have been fine had Cali apologized or made some type of gesture to rectify her mistake. The few times I have encountered issues on prior cruises, they were quickly rectified to my satisfaction; we are low maintenance and rather easy to please.  I do not think I have ever personally experienced a person in such an important role on Celebrity behave so incompetently. That said, we still managed to overall have a very enjoyable cruise.

Thank you for your review.  I'll be looking for other reviews about suites and service for suite guests before our Apex cruise in 2021.  For the price we are paying I'll have no hesitation cancelling the cruise if there are no positive changes, even though we are looking forward to seeing the ship.

Thank you for your honest review. Just a point of correction the sailing date was APRIL 14th, not 13th. I was on the same cruise.😉

I will write-up my own review but as someone that also was on the Dec. 16th sailing let me quickly say that I had an even BETTER time on this cruise than in December. There have DEFINITELY been changes since the inaugural cruise and the ship is starting to find it's groove. The biggest change would definitely be the Entertainment.  Oh and for those that worried that the IV windows would be automatically closed too often let me say that the window only closed by itself once during the cruise.

Gonzo70,

Thank you for your very comprehensive review.  I agree that there is a "non-personal" atmosphere in the Retreat Lounge.  On the M and S class vessels, the concierge and staff in the lounge get to know you quite well within a day or two and always makes it a point to say hello and engage in small talk.  We also never had any problem getting anything served to us in "Michael's Club" on M and S class.....if they had it on the ship we were able to get it in Michael's Club.  Most nights the server was getting our drinks ready as soon as she saw us walk in.  I sailed in January on Edge and found the Retreat Lounge to be rather impersonal and the service was not all that great.  We often waited quite a bit of time before anyone approached us for our drink order (and the place was not crowded!) and not one of the three concierges so much as even said hello to us.  We had no issues for them to resolve but a polite hello and a smile with some small talk would be appropriate.   The Retreat Manager, on the other hand, was very pleasant and we could see where she bent over backwards trying to make folks happy.   We actually stopped going to the Retreat Lounge due to the slow service for drinks (got our drinks much faster in Eden or the Martini Bar!)

In my opinion I also feel it is appropriate to call out a person by name if you receive continual bad service from that person.  If you received continual great service from a crew member you would have no issue naming him/her so I think the same rule of thumb should apply if you receive bad service.

Thanks for your comments; yes, the Retreat Manager is excellent (Priscilla). She was actually our Michael's Club Concierge when we did the Around the Horn Cruise on Summit in late 2017 and loved her. She was rather busy this past cruise as it was her very last cruise before going on vacation, but enjoyed chatting with her when we encountered her. Not sure who took over for her on the current sailing. The non-personal atmosphere is a great way to describe Edge's Retreat Lounge. Absolutely loved the physical space (though having a bar somewhere in the room would be nice), but it just lacked the warm, comforting vibe and excellent service we encountered on Summit's and Infinity's Michael's Club. As much as I loved the natural light, comfortable furniture and great views in Edge's Retreat Lounge, I'd trade that for the friendly, welcoming ambiance of Michael's Club any day.

Thanks very much for posting your review. We’re boarding Edge for the first time this weekend, though not in a suite. We had considered a Sky Suite for our next Edge cruise (next May) but decided against it because of the lack of shade in the Retreat (amongst other reasons, some of which are being resolved by X). Based on your experience, we may never try an Edge suite! Two of our friends will be in a suite for this cruise, so it will be interesting to compare their experience with yours. I am certain they will find your review quite helpful.

Yes, Gonzo70, I agree that Priscilla is one of the best.  She was our Suite Manager on Summit for 2 or 3 sailings in 2018 and I was so happy to see that Celebrity had enough faith in her to assign her to open the Edge.  When Edge first sailed last year they had two Retreat Managers (Bogdan and Priscilla) but when we sailed in January Priscilla was the sole Retreat Manager.  She does really care about her guests and goes above and beyond.  She is a very hard worker.  I know if I had mentioned the poor service we received in the Retreat Lounge she would have been all over it.  But honestly it didn't impact our cruise one little bit.  We just had our drinks elsewhere with excellent service and a much better/friendlier ambiance.

Gonzo, you said there were three RLCs on your sailing. Cali was one; were the other two by chance João and/or Denise?  They were on when we did the December 1-4 Pre-Inaugural sailing. Both were superb!  (Sorry you ended up dealing with someone not at João and Denise’s level!)

I actually am not certain of the other Concierge's names. It was not until towards the end of the cruise we realized how incompetent Cali was; she kept saying she was working on things and, though after a couple of days we grew weary, we gave her the benefit of the doubt rather than trying to go through a different Concierge. We rarely spent time in the lounge the last couple of days since we were able to obtain much better wine and cocktails elsewhere (the steakhouse was kind enough to let me purchase wine by-the-glass to go and we enjoyed the cocktails and vibe in Eden).

You are right about the Retreat. Celebrity needs to up its game significantly.  We were on a few weeks before you and had to have a long conversation with Priscilla (who is fabulous) about the lack of service  (both bar servers and concierges). We were significantly disappointed with all 3 concierges.  I told Priscilla that this was the first cruise since Michaels club had been in place for suites that I did not know the name of a concierge because they always seemed to be on their phone or in their own world.  One night I had servers pass me by 6 times before being offered a drink.  I am hoping that she takes to management all of the feedback experienced cruisers are providing.

Other than that the ship ship is gorgeous and am looking to see what changes in the suite area are made when we cruise in November.
