And to answer the OP question honestly, I usually adhere to the suggested dress code but have worn shorts to the MDR a handful of times in the past....usually first or last night of the cruise when the bags are packed or on a rare occasion, if we have a event after dinner where I may be working up a sweat (think dancing, 70's party or Quest) and I don't have time to go back to the room to change. Nobody has ever given me a second glance.

 

Depending on the age of your son, nobody will probably give him a 2nd glance either,

Tough if anyone does. Those kind of people need to get a life.  If shorts are allowed by the host at the entrance to the MDR that's all that matters.

I wear long pants for diners and my wife usually a dress.  With that said, we have a home in Arizona and our club (and most restaurants) there does allow shorts for dinner - and I wear them!

 

I understand that wearing shorts is not enforced in the MDR, but  my questions is how do people interpret "Shorts are welcomed for breakfast and lunch" to mean "no shorts in the MDR for diner is only a suggestion"?

There are those that are stating that being able to wear shorts at dinner is an absolute. That is definitely not the case. Shorts were not acceptable on Explorer when she was out of Bayonne. For six years of cruising on Grandeur and Enchantment before it out of Baltimore, shorts were not allowed in the dining room for dinner. On my last Grandeur cruise, I got a call from the Maitre D' about why I had not been coming to dinner at the MyTime I had scheduled. He was very nice and wondered if anything was wrong. I mentioned that I was usually in shorts and a collared shirt but didn't want to change for dinner. He said that on port days, I wouldn't have to. Things were loosened but not eliminated. I am not complaining and never have about dress requirements. I'm just reiterating that it is not a universally applied policy.

We've seen at least a dozen passengers shown the door by MDR staff for wearing all sorts of things...including jean shorts and T-shirts on sea days. Some people insist on circumventing things until someone finally says "no". The cheers that came from fellow passengers in the MDR when those folks were escorted out the door were pretty obvious and loud in the area where it happened.

I’m on Anthem now. I have worn shorts every night in the MDR except for formal night which I wore long pants and a long sleeve shirt. There were plenty of men who wore shorts on that night as well. They actually looked better than the men who looked half dressed by wearing a sports jacket with jeans and sneakers. Very few dressed formal. It’s apparent that the majority prefer casual attire and the cruise line should just stop kidding themselves. Service has been hit and miss with formal night being the worst.

Maybe on THAT specific cruise...but we've seen the opposite scenario on cruises as well ( virtually no one wearing shorts in the MDR). That last point is interesting...perhaps you might be on the "nobody cares" or "anything goes" ship/port/itinerary (including the crew). Unfortunate.

My experience of shorts in the MDR with Royal is pretty much anything goes on US outbound cruises but this isn’t the same around the world.

 

We have seen people turned away on a Baltic cruise in shorts and from Dubai it was a complete no no. There was a warning in the Cruise Compass and a sign at the door, you would not have got near the MDR in shorts. 

 

I know this is predominantly a US/Caribbean cruise destination forum (which is why being from the UK I like it) but it concerns me that this “wear what you want, nobody cares” blanket advice is nearly always given but this doesn’t always apply across Royals regions.

Change for the sake of change has destroyed many worthwhile things in history. Values have always evolved over time, but not usually at the expense of tradition, history, and respect for others. Things are in a different place now.

Totally agree with you on this. 

On Indy a couple of weeks ago I didn't see any shorts in the MDR at dinner and Formal nights were observed by the vast majority with most men in jackets and tie and most women in cocktail dresses at the least.

The advice given on these type of threads may apply to cruises from the US but not always those in the rest of the world.

First-hand observation is not generalization.

History has proven that releasing tradition is the first sign of a deteriorating society - feel free to read some history books.

Common sense is the "mother of generalizations", and in the eyes of the beholder.

Rules apply to everyone. Seems simple enough.

I can’t believe this topic is still being discussed.  When the norms began changing several years ago, this topic raged.

 

Now, with the cruise lines embracing more casual attitudes, some (a few) are still holding on to outdated norms.

 

It’s been years since I’ve seen anyone in a tux or gown on formal nights.  I have seen quite a few sport coats and sundresses.  But, that’s about as far as it goes.

 

OMG...shorts in the dining room...how dare anyone?  It’s accepted now, and has been for years.

 

Dress the way you want.  No one is going to stop you from wearing a tux or a gown.  If that’s what makes you feel good, then do it.  But, do not try to dictate how others should dress.  

 

We don’t cruise for your enjoyment or judgments.  Your complaints about the way I dress will fall on deaf ears because frankly, I don’t care....no more than I care if you wear your gown or tux.

My 2 cruises out of the NY/NJ metro area probably had the lowest % of people following the dress code. Could be timing as well as both were in late May/early June after a very long, cool, wet spring and people were bustin to wear summer clothing.

 

Surprisingly, my cruise out of Galveston, TX last fall probably had the highest % of people following the dress code, especially on formal nights. I say "surprisingly" since Texas has a more casual attitude towards dress code (from all the ship reviews I've read) while NY is a fashionista capital. Go figure.

I think I read somewhere that the decline and fall of the Roman empire was caused by men wearing casual toga's and sandals and not their formal toga's. 😀
