Travel agents knowledge

We have just returned from a Greek cruise on Celebrity Constellation. We were in cabin 2073 which we found out was above the staff bar once we were on the ship. This resulted in thumping music being heard by us well past midnight. I complained to cruise118 on our return stating that they should have been aware of the proximity of the staff quarters. They said that they have no knowledge of the location of the staff quarters on cruise ships as the cruise ships do not provide them with such information. I find  this hard to believe. Surely it cannot be difficult to find the location of staff quarters and the location of the potentially noisy staff bar.

In the past I have tried through a variety of means to get hold of deck plans for non-public areas and have never been successful. Maybe others know how this information can be obtained but I genuinely believe that this is not information that travel agents are privy to even those agents that are some of the top selling agents for that particular cruise line

Interesting expectation.  I would think it quite hard to know that information for every ship in the world, particularly since deck plans generally don't disclose such info.  I think a more realistic tactic would be to do independent research before committing to the room (like asking people on here).  Ultimately, your complaint is with the cruise line that is allowing noise to infiltrate your room.

Have heard that the lower decks can be noisy on rough seas..yet didn't think about the crew club. 

 

Do know that fwd mid ship the entrance into a crew space there is a bar area under the helo pad... Crew access from another way--not through the guest staterooms hall

m - Unless your TA has actually sailed in that cabin OR had other clients sail in that cabin, it would be near impossible to know in advance what 'non-public' spaces are contiguous and may cause issues such as you faced.

 

I can guarantee you that your TA now knows about that particular cabin and its' noise issues now.

 

You also may want to do some on-line research for websites which rate cabins and this information may be there...

If not aware, Cruise Critic rules—you would have agreed to them when you registered as a user—prohibit specific references to travel agencies and/or travel agents...

I would imagine that the cruise lines work hard to prevent this information being made public for security purposes if nothing else.

Many thanks for the replies. I am new to cruising so perhaps a bit naive. Sorry was unaware that there should be  no mention of travel agents and cruise operators.

You would be extremely lucky for a small agency to have information that granular readily available and to pass it on to a client. With a big agency? Absolutely no way at all. The same goes for people who call Celebrity directly for extremely detailed strange bits of information. A call center rep will not know.

I am a TA and also sail quite a bit. 

We did the Milennium in 2014 and selected the foreward most oceanivew on deck 6 for it's large size (first time sailing with my travel buddy).

The second nite around 1am the thumping started, I called Pursers desk, they sent security to investigate and it quieted down.  Half hour later it started again...I called, they checked, it quieted down, 30 minutes later......

After two nites of this found out we were above the crew disco 🤔

I pitched a fit and they moved us the next morning...thankfully a balcony cabin had opened up.

 

I do alot of research when selecting cabins for myself and clients...this info isn't really available so you have to do as much 'due diligence' as you can and hope for the best.  My friends just got off another ship where we selected what we thought was a 'safe' location, turned out it under buffet where there was no carpeting so chair scraping noise was heard alot!

Safest locations are  usually but not always between 2 decks with cabins... above and below.

 

What category cabin was that one with the noise..?

 

Did you complain to Celeb about the noise and ask them to come and listen?

Yes I complained when on the ship and they offered us money of any future. However this does not stop us being inconvenienced because of the noise from the staff bar. Although TAs may not have access to the location of staff quarters, such as bars and discos, Celebrity must have this information.

They should not book guests in this cabin.....Can"'t begrudge the crew having a social area but guests deserve a peaceful area too,

Sorry, that you had problems on your cruise.  To me it's a simple rule, always have passenger cabins on all side of my cabin.  You are taking a risk if you don't know what's around you.  I don't need a TA to tell me that.

as to the likelihood of a travel agent knowing anything about non-public areas on a ship -- when there are hundreds of ships at sea -- I would say it is unreasonable to expect the agent to know about this.

But I think it is very reasonable for the TA to tell their client that there might be a noise problem because we don't know what's below you.  We don't know if that waring was provided.  You don't need a deck plan for that. I doubt that this noise was limited to the OP's cabin, we don't know if the noise was loud enough to bother others.

My experience of the average TA in the UK is I know a hell of a lot more than they do. One or two i’ve come into contact with will also tell you anything they think you want to hear in order to get a sale. That includes a couple of cruise specialist agencies who had staff that were completely clueless. It’s pretty sad when I have to tell them how it works.

I agree that it shouldn't be available to paying guests. With a 17 year old ship, you can't tell me that was the first complaint about that cabin (and maybe a couple of adjacent cabins), unless the crew bar was recently relocated.

Also a good reason to use sites such as this to ask others. I am not trying to sound clever but I always check to make sure by viewing deck plans and asking others who have cruised that particular ship. I am not sure anyone would know every ship.

If it is other passengers, then the cruise line has an obligation to "fix" the problem

There is always a learning curve when being a newbie; no worries, as we have all been newbies at one time, although some more educated than others...sorry you had to put up with all that noise!

Most travel agents would not know specific cabins to avoid.  Your best bet is to check here.

How many ships and cruise lines are there?  

 

Would it be possible for someone to know about every cabin on every ship?

 

Unless a TA deals exclusively with one or two  cruise lines it would almost be impossible.   

 

The TA that I deal with owns his agency and knows a lot.  He has a secretary and I always deal with him directly.   He only deals with a few cruise lines and learns a lot from his customers feedback.
